This last time out, Harri seemed to be a lot more bored than she had
been before when we had a long drive day. She would sometimes actually
appear to be depressed (do cats get depressed?)
I decided that she might like to try being a housecat for a while. Since
I'm supposed to be back home again in less than a week, I left Harri at
home. This will give her a chance to get to know her Ranger sister, and
to get more familiar with Nancy.
But man, do I feel weird not having my Roadcat! Every hour or so last
night I'd call to Harri to come do an arm nap, then realize she wasn't
here. This is going to take some getting used to!

Awwwww :( I'll bet that's a very odd feeling. Purrs for you to be able to
sleep at night, too, without your little Roadcat.

Since Rusty is on antidepressant for peeing problem, I guess cats
do get depressed. But what are the appearnaces of a depressed cat?
How do you tell Harri was depressed and bored?
I know in a depressed human may sleep a lot. But Rusty is sleeping a lot
on the antidepressant, which does resolve his behavioural problem.

I'm assuming the symptoms are the same. She was spending a lot more time
sleeping, and a much higher percentage of her time sleeping in the
overhead instead of on the dash or in my arms. Very similar to my
symptoms before I was first diagnosed as clinically depressed - sleeping
a lot, trying to keep away form others (even more than I normally do),
not seeming to be interested in much of anything.
Tomorrow Nancy has the day off and can spend all day with the kitties.
It will be interesting to see what she observes of Harri's bahavior at home.

How old is she now? They do tend to sleep a lot more after they get out of
the kitten stage (what is it, about 18 - 20 hours a day spent sleeping?).

Let us know too, please.

She was 3 1/2 months old when she joined me on November 9. So I guess
she's about 9 1/2 months.

Yeah, you can tell by the "...With Mommy" stories that Sammy started to slow
down about then. She still has bursts of wildly inappropriate kitten-ness,
but they are fewer and further between and don't last as long (WAH! I want
another kitten!!!!).
It may just be that Harri is growing up.

I'm sure hoping that's the case. I guess we'll see what Nancy observes
today.

Aww, it must be hard. I know I feel completely lost when I leave the
cats out on the island in my mother's care while I come back to town to
work. At least I'll have Mere here this summer.

It'll be worse trying to get to sleep.
So what do you think of Ranger? Is she a keeper?

Oh, definitely! She is so soft and fluffy and fuzzy and playful and -
well, kittenish.

Poor Dan! I hope you can get home soon to cuddle Harri, and that she's
happy at home without you...

I know that having a Roadcat made the long hours pass more pleasantly.
Purrs for you to feel connected to her and to your friends from the
group -- hope it helps.

It does. Being able to keep in touch with other cat folks helps a lot.
Tonight might be tough - I'll be stopping at Fernley, where we had a
very pleasant kitten walk a few days ago.

I had a chance to go on a great trip for work about two years ago (memo to
self: start lobbying for a similar trip next fall), but I missed my cats!
I found the worst time was at night. Oh, I wasn't suffering - I had
comfortable beds. But there were no cats on them! No Mandy quietly
choosing her place, or Betsy ritualistically clawing the corner of the
bottom mattress before clambering up in her typically noisy and clumsy
way!
