I know my situation isn't nearly as dire as many, but ...

I just found out this morning that I've been laid off.

Due to shifting priorities at NASA, my project's budget for this year
was decimated.  I was rolled off of the s/w team because apparently,
I'd been scheduled to roll off this summer anyway, so it was the least
schedule impact.  And apparently, none of the other projects had the
budget for another person right now.

I'm trying to look at this as an opportunity to find an awesome job,
rather than a kick in the teeth, which is what it feels like.  I've
been working harder and enjoying myself more on this project than I
have at work in a long time.  It's just so backwards.

My "stupidity loan" is two payments away from done, so I'll be able to
finish it off before my severance gives out.  At least there's that.
And DH did just get a raise, so we're not as badly off as we could
have been ...

Still, this is the first time I've been without employment since
before I graduated from college.  It's a shocker and I'm scared.

We're purring for you. I've been shopping for a new job and I've seen a
lot of opportunities for programmers in this area of the country. From
what I hear, dice.com is the best IT job website around.

Ah, blast from the past!  I used dice when searching for my current
job.

I do see some good stuff in this area.  Unfortunately, my knee issues
make driving all the way to Denver sound about as appealing as dental
surgery ... too bad, because Denver has some awesome-sounding jobs.
I'm seeing some interesting stuff in Boulder, too, though.  It looks
like things are thawing for software.  I hope that's true.

Good job finding purrs are headed your way.  I've been there and I know how
scary that feeling is, but you'll get through this - life never seems to
close one door without opening another.

You are bright and capable, Monique, and you have a good
partner to support you emotionally and otherwise. Try not to
fear too much. In your heart you know it will be just fine.
New opportunities! Maybe you could go into business for
yourself! Have you ever thought about that?

Actually, I have, but it's not the time.  It's something I'd want to
do with another person, too, and I just don't know someone like that
who's currently available.

I'd want my finances in a better state before I took the risk of
starting something myself.

Well, maybe you can work up to that. At least you have good

It is really tough to land on the job market unexpectedly.  And with a
little luck, job hunting is a skill many of us don't have a lot of
experience with.  I disliked looking for a job so much, that I even had a
hard time interviewing people to hire.  Imagining myself in their shoes made
me extremely uncomfortable.

Work on not being too scared.  Give yourself at least a couple of weeks
where you don't just jump at anything to just be working again.  There is
time for that if you can't find something you really want and look forward
to doing.

Start working on a resume that includes everything for your own files.  And
then use the appropriate information for a public one.  Review all of your
skills that can be job skills and every one you know that could be
considered a contact.

And let everyone you can think of know that you are looking for a job.

Ain't that the truth.  I enjoyed interviewing people (being on the
hired side of the table), but that's probably because I'd never been
in a desperate position.  I'm sure I'll have more empathy now.

Absolutely.  I've already been searching and sorting things into two
buckets, "first" and "everything else."  I'll apply all over the place
and see what happens.

I need to find out how unemployment works, too, I guess ... is that a
state thing or federal? I don't even know.  Man.

If things get really rough, we have a lot of money socked away in
401(K)s and IRAs.  I'm hoping we won't have to touch that, though DH
has already reduced his 401(K) contributions to the minimum for which
he gets a corporate match.  I'd hate to have to give up free money.

Yup, I've been through this pretty recently.  In a sense, this is good
timing, because I've been a prime contributor to a lot of stuff on
this project, so I have lots of recent experience to fill up the
resume.

> And let everyone you can think of know that you are looking for a

Definitely.  Unfortunately, most everyone I know has nothing to do
with software.  I'm also working on building my references list up.

Turns out that in Colorado, you can file online, and all you have to
do is call an automated phone system once every two weeks.  My
nightmares of having to stand in line for hours were unfounded.

Yeah really. As the one out of one here, I can relate.
But you're going to be fine. Just remember that you WILL have to go
through the stages of grief, and to allow yourself to go through it.
It's NORMAL. Take a little time (an hour or two maybe), then get
on with the job-hunting.  lol
I can recommend hotjobs.yahoo.com, too. That's where I found my last
job.  Dice.com is where I found the job before that.....
Monster.com is also very good.  Post your resume EVERYWHERE.

> EVERYWHERE.

The grief thing is so true!  There are times when I feel fine, even
great; others when I feel like I've just been dumped.  That's really
the closest emotional response I can think of: that feeling of
rejection.

Thanks for reminding me that I should post my resume.  I'd somehow
blanked on doing that (as opposed to sending my resume directly to
companies).  I've heard that posting your resume rarely works, but
it's easy enough that there's no reason to miss the chance.

[BEGIN RANT]

Except that Monster is really stupid.  I don't have Word on my
computer; I've been using OpenOffice and exporting to PDF.  I prefer
to do that, anyway, because different versions of Word will format a
document slightly differently; with PDF, you know exactly what it will
look like.  Anyhoo, Monster *only* supports Word documents.  Not only
that, but for reasons I really don't understand, it seems that Word
must be installed on the machine from which you're uploading the
document.  So I went through this fun little routine of saving my
resume as a Word doc in OpenOffice, then opening it on DH's computer
because he has Word.  The formatting was screwy.  So I saved it as an
older version of Word, and that looked right in Word, but Monster
still wouldn't let me upload it.  Finally I uploaded it from DH's
computer.  What a stupid pain.  Dice, on the other hand, just let me
upload in HTML, which was much simpler and makes much more sense.

[END RANT]

[DEEP BREATH]

Now I just need to focus on finding a job.  That's harder than it
should be.  Now that I'm home all day, I'm finding all sorts of chores
that I found it easy to ignore when I spent most of my day at work.  I
could easily keep myself busy all day without sending a single resume.

Thank you to everyone (not just Christine) for the well-wishes.

I'm a software engineer.  My first job was writing Java applications
to interface with massive military databases; this latest job was for
Ball Aerospace.  I had a hand in Deep Impact, which is scheduled to
slam into a comet (on purpose!) around the 4th of July, and I had a
lot to do with Kepler, the search for habitable planets (how cool is
that?).  Unfortunately, NASA pulled the rug out from under Kepler this
year, altering our budget by tens of millions 1/3 of the way through
the year.

After all of this contractor stuff, I think my first attempts will be
within the commercial sector.
