Sorta OT, a rant (long)

Magic Mood Jeep© - 02 May 2005 16:37 GMT I guess it was Tanada that posted the humorous Freecycle ad. I loved it. I also subscribe to my local Freecycle email. And yesterday, someone posted </rant>:
[BBINFreecycle] Wanted: Baby Kitten We are looking for a baby kitten...we prefer a male, however we'd take a female also. We're especially looking for a kitten who is very friendly, likes to lay on laps, and be handled. Our ideal kitten would have unusual markings of any kind..we're open to any color except Calico as we have a calico already, and wanting this one to be different. We'd love to take a look at any kittens you have that need a good home. Thanks! jen
That kinda burned me, so I replied directly to her email address:
Try the local humane society http://www.monroehumane.org/ Sure, there's a fee, but it is up to date on all vaccines and already spayed/neutered, so you won't have to pay a vet to do it. Or Pet Finder http://www.petfinder.com/ A lot of shelters list there, and also rescue organizations Check out http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IN162.html and http://www.animalsanctuaryinc.org/
And this was her reply:
I realize that about the shelter, however quite frankly, it's a pain to go through adoptions there...just thought someone on freecycle might have one, which is why i asked here...the money isn't the issue, being able to go and pick out a kitten without filling out lots of paperwork, and taking lots of my time is.
Well, that *really* burned me! I stewed about it for at least 20 minutes before I fired off with the following (and I admit I held back)
Well, then I guess I'm sorry that I wasted some of your precious "time".
Just wondering, if you don't have the "time" to fill out a simple form (while somewhat invasive, or a pain in your terms, it is found to be necessary in order to ensure the well being of the adopted pet), how do you have the "time" to care for one cat, let alone a second????
While not affiliated to any of the shelters I listed, I have done rescue work (on my own with no assistance from outside sources, except Pets Alive who listed them on Petfinder for me), and believe me, you get attached to the animals and have their well-being in mind when you adopt them out. I couldn't take the heart-break of sending them to their new homes any more, so I stopped, and kept the remaining kittens I had been offering. I now have several well-fed, well-adjusted 'teenage' cats (one raised from just a few days old - talk about a "time-killer", not to mention "sleep-killer", but it amazes me that this kitty I see now, on the window sill, chasing a bug that's caught between window & screen, was just a tiny little fuzzball less than 2 years ago). and yes, I do still keep in touch with the people that adopted from me, send them birthday & holiday greetings and reminder of when their pet(s) are due for their yearly checkup & shots. (for pictures of any or all of my cats, go to http://community.webshots.com/user/mgcmdjeep ... Yeah, some of them have silly names, but that's the fun of having a cat)
Sorry if I sound so harsh, but there are so many people who don't have the "time" to fill out a form at a shelter, so they pick out a kitten from the free ads in the paper... Then they don't have "time" to get the kitten spayed - which, in as little as six months time, leads to more kittens. Then they don't have the "time" to take the unwanted litter to the shelter, so they just dump them somewhere to fend for themselves, to die a horrible & lonely death either at the hands of some lunatic, in the mouth of a coyote (yes, there ARE coyotes in Indiana), starve because they have no clue as what to do, or get crushed by a car. If you go to the Bloomington Petsmart, there is an orange cat there, and taped to her cage is her sad story, very similar to what I've just told you.
On another note, there is a nice article in today's Herald Times titled "Lets Be Pals" about the local shelter.
I will end my rant now, and hopefully you won't think of me as some PETA nutso-freakazoid. Nancy Lee </endrant>
Do you think I did the right thing, or should I have totally flambasted this chick and not apologized at all? I have yet to hear from her since I just sent that last one a few minutes ago. She probably won't reply. If she does, I will post an update on this. OH, and her email address was a gmail account, but I *do* have her full name, so she won't be all that hard to find if I feel the urge to go postal all over her. Maybe she should tour the local shelter on euthanasia day??? (IMO, a pre-requisite for pet ownership for all humans beings)

And yesterday, someone >posted </rant>: Your response was great. I hate the idea of pets being given away on Freecycle, like they are clothes that don't fit or an old couch. I've had people come into the shelter that are amazed that we charge an adoption fee "you have so many, why don't you give them away?" and/or that they have to answer questions like "which vet do you use?" (don't really care who, just want to make sure any previous/current pets got routine care). I'm sure this idiot will find her free kitten, unfortunately.

I'm just guessing, though, as I could find no info on this on their web site.
HRFLTiger - 02 May 2005 18:07 GMT I don't think you were harsh enough about her precious "time", but that's just me. Furry owners are time. They take time to keep them healthy. GAH. Don't get me started.

Magic Mood Jeep© - 02 May 2005 18:47 GMT Her reply to my rant was:
I'm shocked to receive such a response from you. You don't know anything about me, but I'm more than willing to share with you.
I am a married mother of three children ranging in age from 14-8 years old. We have two cats that we love dearly and take pride in. One is our Calico "Sundae", is 7 years old, and has been with us since she was a kitten. She has been spayed since she was 5 months old, and has never had a litter of kittens. She is also up to date on all shots, and an INDOOR cat, as she has always been. My brother found her along the side of a road while walking with my mother (Sundae was only 4-5 wks old at the time, probably abandon there) and that is how we came to love her.
Our other cat we came to love only recently. My sister in law saved the little guy this past December during the snow storm. He was ferrel, and only about 3wks old. She could not (or did not want to) care for him, so we took him, and simply fell in love with him. He was neutered in Feb. of this year, and is also an INDOOR cat. "Touch Down" is a simply wonderful cat, the most loving cat I've ever known, and we are thrilled to have him as a part of our family. He is also up to date on shots, and taken very good care of.
Our desire for a third INDOOR cat comes from the fact that Touch Down is very playful and active, and our older cat isn't interested in playing with him, she just kind of tolerates him. We thought if we could find him a friend nearer his age, he'd be more content when we are gone during the day. This was at the suggestion of our vet.
My issues with the local shelter, though I realize they must put people through the paperwork in order to find GOOD homes for them, is that it is an inconvience, and I am a busy person, and I'd rather spend an afternoon playing with my children, and my pets, rather than sitting filling out paperwork at the shelter. I think they have a good service, but there are MORE than enough unwanted kittens out there that need good homes.
In the future, do not jump to conclusions about people you do not know. I am not a terrible person for not wanting to spend my valuable time at a shelter when I can get a kitten from a number of other sources and provide it with a good home.
Jen
Of course, I have no idea how much of what she said is true (and the same goes of what I tolde her), and am in the process of a 'sort-of apology' and explanation for my rant.

Even though she's taken great care of the cats she has, it still rubs me the wrong way that she can't take time to go to a shelter. Come on, it doesn't take *that* long. Maybe an hour to pick out your kitten, and hour to do paperwork. At some places, you may have to come back the next day to take the kitten home. Big deal. I'm still suspicious, but then again, I'm one of those jaded, bitter shelter ladies.

I've never been afiliated with our local shelter, but have just today completed an online application to be a volunteer, in whatever capacity they need (scoop litter? big whoop - I do that here!)

Cool! That's how I started at the shelter I'm with. I hope you find it rewarding. Re: Update #2 - I think you may have gotten through! Good work :-)

Magic Mood Jeep© - 02 May 2005 20:17 GMT Here's my 'sorta-apologie':
I apologize for being so harsh. I did not mean to lump you in with all those horrible people that just dump their pets like so much unwanted Big Mac and Whopper wrappers.
I did not know your reasoning for wanting a "free" kitten. All you stated was that their forms were a pain and a waste of your time. That rubbed me the wrong way, so I replied the way I did.
I commend you for wanting a playmate for your indoor kitten! I too know what it's like to have older cats with younger kittens wanting to play with them. The older cats can get grumpy about the 'alone' time. One of my older cats is going for a dental at the end of this month (he gets his teeth professionally cleaned more often than I do). I also commend you for keeping your cats indoors and ensuring that they are spayed/neutered & up to date with all shots.
But did you ever stop and think that it's people that take in these 'free' kittens that only encourage those people that didn't get their cat spayed in the first place to think that if they can give away the kittens, they might be able to sell them???? Thus those people will continue to 'breed' their poor cat, and there will even be more cats & kittens than the shelter can hold. Same holds true for puppies & dogs.
On a side note, in the time that it took you to write your response to me, you probably could have filled out the adoption application at the shelter, or on Petfinder. And it's not that painful. Have you been to the shelter??? You go in, look at the pets available, make your selection. Fill out the application. If approved, you can take your pet home the next day (the wait is to ensure that you have the necessary equipment for the pet: litterbox, food, dishes, leash, pooper-scooper...etc). I've done it, more than once. And many parents DO take their children there to help in the pet-selection process We used to donate food & supplies to the shelter, but stopped when I quit my job in 2002. I have now filled out an application to be a volunteer at the shelter, in whatever capacity that they can use me.
I do hope that you find suitable a playmate for your over-active kitty, Touch Down.
I would also like to commend you for spending time with your children, especially today when too many people have kids that they find it a nuisance to spend time with.
Nancy Lee
And her reply was:
You know it's funny when I was writing the email to you I thought the exact thing you said, that I could have filled out the form at the shelter in the same amount of time, the difference is I wrote you from my office at work, and I didn't have to drive anywhere "extra" to write you the email.
I really never thought about me being an encouragement to people who have kittens to give away as we've never gotten a cat like that before. I hope I am not an encouragement to anyone not to have their cats fixed...cats, at least mine, are much happier when spayed/neutered, and it is simply the right thing to do.
Thank you for your last response to me, I appreciate it. Have a good day, Jen
I am actually cheering her attitude in re: fixing pets!
Yay!!! I think I might have actually gotten through!!!

Sounds like you did. That's excellent. :) Most peple just don't understand the complexities of the cat overpopulation problem. Unfortunately it's easy to jump to the wrong conclusion when you see adds like hers. I'm glad it ended on a sweet note instead of a sour one. I hope she will consider the HS/shelter as an "outing" for the family. It's an excellent opportunity to educate her kids as well as plant the seeds of animal welfare/rescue at the same time.
