Well, there's a problem.  Today, after dropping Mandy and I off at
school/work, Rob and Mike, with Mike driving, were in an accident.

From what I could piece together, they were heading up to post to buy
gas for the van.  They were in a green light-left turn yield, and Rob
told Mike that he could go.  So Mike did.  He saw the car coming at him
in time to gun the engine and the impact was directly behind the
passenger seat, which saved Rob's life, as the impact was enough to dent
in the entire side of the van, kick the passenger seats to a roughly 45
degree angle, and send the van into another car, which it front ended
and sent into another car.  This big hurky van was then knocked onto its
side and sent skidding.  Had the car hit where Rob was sitting, he,
according to the investigating police, would have been killed.  Rob and
Mike were hurt the most, with scrapes, sore muscles and seat belt
bruising.  The driver and two teen aged daughters of the other car were
sent to the hospital with shock and bruising.  The drivers and
passengers of the other two cars walked away.  Mike and Rob are both
still in a sort of state of shock.  We're borrowing Mandy's boyfriend's
Mother's van, as Geico refuses to pay for a rental after my accident
three years ago.

We are canceling future plans left and right.  Both Mike and Rob are
battered but un-bowed.  The money we'd planned on using for the trip is
going to another car/van.  We don't know how much we'll have to spend on
another vehicle.  The van is, of course, totaled.  Mike and Rob are each
blaming each other.  I think I've experienced every emotion there is.  I
was at work when I got the call saying they were at the hospital.

Some one up there loves and/or hates us.  They saved Rob and Mike, but
the car is a loss.  I'd rather have Rob and Mike.  Purrs and prayers for
things to go better for us would be really appreciated right about now.

OMG!! So glad they are relatively OK! Man, you guys do not get any breaks.
Purrs for gentle healing and good car news.

Please sit down and hold a kitten.  Change kittens as you wear them out.

I'm so sorry about the accident.  And so glad the worst of the injury
appears to be to sheet metal.

I'm terrible at judging the speed/distance of oncoming traffic.  Poor depth
perception.

When Rob and Mike get tired of blaming each other maybe they will start to
wonder how fast the other car was traveling..

Since your's sounds totaled, hope you get good value for it and soon.

Mike and Rob are each blaming themselves.  I've been the one alternately
kicking their bottoms.  It was a 45 mph zone.  I suspect that the car
sped up in an attempt to beat Mike past the turn, and was going well
over 60 at the time of impact.  I already said something about this to
Rob and Mike and they feel a little better about it.

Rob had nightmares last night, as did I.  Mike says that he had no
problems sleeping, I believe him.  He tends to fall asleep under stress.
Me?  I went out and bought a ton of comfort food for us all.

Ohmygawd, how awful about the van, how wonderful they were not hurt or
killed!  Please tell them to take it easy for the next couple of days to a
week, they'll be a lot more sore tomorrow and the next day (sometimes people
who have been in accidents don't even realize how bad they've been hurt for
a day or two).

I know exactly how you feel.  A few years ago, when Mark had come back home
to live for a while, two Emergency Personnel came to knock on my door to
tell me my son had been in a wreck.  They told me right away that Mark was
alive - they kept insisting that he wasn't badly hurt.  I realized why they
kept telling me that when DH and I drove to the site of the wreck and saw
the car.  Like you I was in shock and I didn't believe that he couldn't have
been horribly hurt.

We went immediately to the hospital and he was walking out when we got
there!

When we went to sign the car over to the salvage yard later that week, the
person in charge was shocked that my son was alive - they thought for sure,
from the condition of the car, that it had been a fatality accident.

Here are pictures (why does is seem my life is documented in film - well not
file, but digitized images! ;>).  Can you believe he walked away from
that???!

My preaching and teaching my kids to *ALWAYS* wear their seatbelts the whole
time they were growing up really paid off in that instance.  If he hadn't
been wearing his seatbelt her would have fallen through the sun roof and
then crushed by the car - or at the very least been knocked unconscious and
then drowned in the canal.  As it was all he had was some bruising on his
shoulder where the seatbelt held him in safely and he was able to undo his
seatbelt and get out of the water.

By a major miracle, everyone involved in the accident was wearing their
seat belts.  We drove back to the van to make sure that we got
everything out of it, and get the license plate.  It was a good thing.
We'd left the wrought iron tripod that we use for camping in the back of
the van.  Not only that but Sylvester and Boo Boo kitty (stuffed
animals) were laying in the glass in the back.  We found a bunch of
other things that we really don't want to lose.  Mike got his first good
look at the van since the accident and realized that the van was hurt
worse than he thought.  I suspect that he got the shakes, but the matter
of fact way that the tow guy, Rob, and I were talking got him over it.

I don't think I've ever seen a van look so trashed out without having
had a fire set off in it.

Man, I can understand how the salvage yard guy could be shocked that
Mark was alive.  That was a nasty wreck.  I should borrow Jim and his
camera and get pictures of poor Moby Bob.  There is no way I can
adequately describe the carnage that was once our van.

The tow driver kept telling me how surprised he was that no one was
seriously hurt.  He was as upset about the van being totaled as I was.
He kept saying that it was a really good van and so forth.  I think the
motor may well be salvageable, but not much else will.

Pam S. grateful that Rob and Mike are going to be OK, and so glad that
Mark is fine.

I agree with you Jane 9 times out of 10 seatbelts do save lives, but my
husband was in an accident a few years ago and was not wearing his. A
dump truck hit him and his brother nearly head on. My husbands brother
died on impact (he was wearing his seatbelt) my husband was thrown free
through the windshield (he was not wearing his seatbelt). The officer
at the scene told him thats what saved his life.

I always wear mine but to this day my husband will not put his on.

And Pat I am so glad that everyone was okay.

Eep!  I'm so glad everyone seems to have come out of the accident
okay.

My family had Geico when I was a kid, and their experiences lead me to
believe that Geico is the insurance company for those who will never
be in an accident.  After many years of completely clean driving, two
very minor incidents in one year and Geico dropped them.  It seems
like Geico is only interested in insuring those who will never cost
them a dime.

I was with Geico for about 6 years.  I'm a good driver!!  But then one rainy
day I swerved to avoid a dog (running loose, dammit!) and in the process I
hit a telephone pole.  The entire front-end of my car was crushed.  Had this
been back in the days of airbags, it would have gone off and probably
crushed my glasses into my face.  As it was, I was (always do) wearing my
seatbelt.  The impact knocked me briefly out.  I had a cracked sternum from
where the seatbelt locked across my chest and a sprained ankle from hitting
the brake attempting to stop.  These symptoms didn't show up for a day.  I
guess I was in shock.  Geico paid to replace my totalled car (of course at
depreciated value, still I must commend them on giving me that much).  Then
they promptly dropped me.  I suppose I should have hired a lawyer about my
medical bills but at the time I wasn't thinking.  I grit my teeth every time
I see those ads for Geico or get one of their notes in the mail.

Anyone who is former military or a military dependent, contact USAA.  I've
had my insurance - car, rental, life and even my mutual funds - with them
for the last 4 years.  You can only be a member if you were attached in some
way to the military but the rates are outstanding and they don't drop you if
you have an accident.

When I bought Peaches I was driving home with her and she was trying to get
out of her birdie box.  A woman stopped suddenly in front of me and I was
trying to keep the bird in the box and I ran right into her (LOW speed).
Totally my fault (but hey, I wasn't sure what would happen if a baby
lovebird got loose in my car!!!).  USAA paid for the damage to my car (hers
wasn't damaged, thankfully) and paid for a rental car while the car was in
the shop for almost a month.  They never raised my rates.  They also didn't
cancel my coverage.

Geico sucks, IMHO.

We have Progressive insurance.  When I got into an accident, the Progressive
agent showed up before the police or wreckers did (that's saying something
here in Houston because there's usually 15 wreckers on the scene 2 minutes
after the airbags deploy!).  He was extremely supportive, calming,
reassuring - he got me and the guy I hit (it was my fault) rental cars,
immediately got our cars in the shop, and made sure nobody needed any
medical assistance afterwards (he called both me and the guy I hit every
other day for almost two weeks to make sure we were OK).  Not only did they
not drop us after the wreck, but our rates didn't even go up (OK it was the
only accident I'd even been in in 35+ years of driving, but still!).  We pay
a little bit more than Geico, but I'd say it is well worth it.

Hire an attorney, immediately.  I don't care if it's one of those 'ambulance

ceases to amaze me how many people see someone who is properly yielding at a
light and what does the oncoming car do?  Speed up, rather than let the
person yield.  Idiots in motion.

Holy Cr*p, Pam! How fast was that guy going? He must have realling been

How are Mike and Rob doing today? How are you doing? I hope that they aren't

I'd like to see the authorities and/or the insurance companies take a GOOD
look at the wrecked vehicles, to try and determine how fast the car that
struck the van was going.

IMO, if that driver was speeding, they've earned a ticket, also.

Pam,
This is shocking, indeed.  I'm glad everyone survived and nobody was
seriously injured.

Jim and I were hoping to get to Toad Suck, but not too sure how to get there
and back in a weekend.

About the insurance, it's too late for this care, but with Rob having been
in the military, you should be eligible for USAA.  I'm surprised you did not
already have it.  It is not always the least expensive, but it is not the
most expensive, either, and you just cannot beat it for customer service.
We have our house, vehicles, lives insured with it.  We've had it since 1966
and were treated like royalty the few claims we had.  We won't even talk to
another insurance company.

I suppose Rob and Mike are really sore right now.  I think the third day is
supposed to be the worse.

It sounds like that car that hit them must have been going pretty fast to
hit them that hard.

Hugs to all of you,
Annie

I'm with you on that, Annie.  I'm with USAA as a former military dependent.
When I first signed up, I gave them my Dad's USAA number and the guy on the
phone literally laughed - Dad was one of the first members so it's a very
low number.  The service is outstanding.  I've got my auto, rental and my
IRA with them.  When they learned I was unemployed they sent me materials on
job searches.  Certainly wasn't something they were required to do but it
was a nice gesture.

Ack, Pam! What a scary accident!  I'm so sorry, and I too, recommend the
kitten cure whenever you obsess about this.  I'm so thankful neither Mike
nor Rob nor anyone else were seriously hurt, disabled or killed. Cars can be
replaced, even if at great expense, but family members cannot.

After this report, I think I'll chuck that latest Geico add in the trash,
and stick with expensive but good Allstate insurance!

We still haven't heard back from Geico.  However, I went out for the
paper and some donuts for breakfast and stopped at two yard sales on the
way back.  Not only did I get a really good sized glass mixing bowl, but
I also may have a car.

One of the yard sales was just up the street and I got to talking to the
woman having it, and told her about the accident.  She mentioned that
they want to get rid of their '89 Ford Tempo.  We are going to see how
it runs by putting one of our adoptive son's batteries in it, and
running it.  If it runs well, we're buying it for $400.  It will work as
a second car and, if necessary, as something to use until we can buy
another travel car.  The owner drove it up until a few months ago when
her hubby bought her a Jeep Wagoneer.  It isn't pretty, but it will
function.

Sounds good, Pam. Hope it turns out well. You can't beat the
price-that's cheaper than you'd spend to rent a car for any length of
time.
I've always been very utilitarian about cars anyway. I never did "get"
people who paid more for their cars than I did for my house.

No kidding!  When I bought my 2002 Hyundai brand new I paid $11,000 for it
with all the bells and whistles.  By that I mean A/C (no way can you drive
in the Southern US without air), CD player, tinted windows, etc.  When I
told my brother what I paid for the car he joked, "Does it have wheels?"
He, of course, pays somewhere around $34,000 for a car, and it doesn't have
anything more on it than mine does.  All I want to do is get from Point A to
Point B.

Yes!  And stay with Allstate. I've been a happy Allstate customer
for years and years, and will never change (unless I can get USAA. lol)
Many years ago, when I was a child, my mother had an accident that was
the other lady's fault. The other car had Allstate, my mother had a
local insurance company, and my mother had to pay.  At that time, I
thought 'I want Allstate on MY side!', and so I have.  They have
proven themselves to me over and over as I careen my way over the
highways, getting into far too many accidents.  Last time, a guy
rear-ended me SO hard that he rammed my car into the truck in front
of me, and THAT truck into the car in front of him!  My car was
barely a year old, and the guy had to pay over $10,000 to fix it
all - $6000 to fix the car and $4000 to fix me.
I love Allstate.

We're fortunate enough to have USAA (DFIL was in the Air Force long
enough that he qualifies, and DH gets in as a former dependent). I'll
keep Allstate in mind if we ever need to switch, though.

What a relief Mike and Rob are safe and not too badly injured! Bummer about
the van, seems you have gruesome luck with vans. Purrs for all of you.

As to Toad Suck, since I can't go there myself, and I"ve already attended my
annual RPCA get-together, is there anything I can do to help you folk get
there anyway?

Thank you.  You don't know how grateful I am to Mike for gunning the gas
and getting the front passenger seat out of the way.  That car caved in
the passenger side by about 3.5 feet.  Rob would have been killed had
Mike not gunned it.  I suspect that he's getting tired of me thanking
him for saving Rob's life, but I don't care.  As far as I'm concerned.
Mike is a hero.

On another note.  Charles, a sorta foster son, has told me that he'll
give us up to $400 to help get us to Toadsuck.  It may be possible for
us to get there after all.  We'll see, but I'm not going to count on any
thing.

BTW, I'm never going to buy another Fodor's guide book again.  I bought
one for the southern states on the 18th.  I think it was a way of
telling the evil spirits that it was time to make the accident happen.

He definitely is a hero to have had thesense and presence of mind to do the
smart thing and not panic and slam on the brake like most people would have
done.  Please tell him that you're not the only one to think he is a hero.

Yay!  I doubt we'll be able to make it all the way from Houston, but I'm
happy you may get the chance to go.  If you do you know we'll want pictures!

about your van and vacation plans, but relieved that Mike and Rob are
ok.  Hugs and purrs,
