Hopitus - 30 Apr 2005 02:27 GMT Few days ago I found a pound, round cheese wheel @ local supermarket for less than $5! Today I broke into it and noticed "Finlandia" with logo....checking side panel I saw it was imported to a NJ, USA city. Just now went to Finlandia cheese's website; sure enough this delicious muenster is from a co. named "Valio" in your country, Marina. I learned their cheese production is lactose-free as well as organic (no growth hormones, no antibiotics) but got a real kick out of clicking on little strip that says, "get to know our country, company, etc." Pastoral scenes of their simplified factory settings - complete w/ mooing cows and crowing chickens! I read it all...and the longer you stay in that link, the louder the cows mooing gets. Also learned that like the Japanese saying "Ichiban" which you see on many Nippon products...the Finnish word "Valio" means "the best" or "number 1". I will continue to buy and enjoy this cheese as long as King Soopers or Kroger offers it.

BAD Hopitus!! <smack smack> Finlandia Cheese is NOT on the heart-healthy diet! You are SO busted!!

Hopitus - 30 Apr 2005 03:54 GMT You are *so* right, Sherry...what Hopitus lacks in not being able to drink alcohol is made up w/cheese consumption. I can and do tell myself cheese is giving me calcium.....and protein......

As you already know, moderation is key. I'm a cheese addict, too, but on good days I keep it down to small amounts. One trick I've found is to get high-quality (not cheap), sharp cheddar. It's so strong that I have to eat the piece very slowly and cut the taste with slices of apple, so by the time I'm done with the cheddar and the apple, I've worked through the craving.

I always eat my cheese slice with kosher dill pickles to cut the taste. I've never like mixing sweet and sour tastes except when eating Chinese food. ;>

Tell ya what, you stick to eating pickles with cheese, and I'll stick to my apples =P
(I like pickles, but eating them with cheese just doesn't compute.)
Actually, though, I don't think of cheddar as sour -- maybe bitter or sharp -- hrm.

I have a friend who is very "into" entertaining....either that or she just likes to drink....anyway, anytime I visit she has these cool Martha Stewart-ish hor douvres and offers me a glass of wine. I always decline 'cause I never have drank alcohol and wasn't sure how it would interact with meds. But sometimes I'd *like* too, just because it seems so suave to drink alcohol out of a pretty glass. LOL. Sherry

LOL. > Sherry I can't drink alcohol. I can't even get it close enough to my nose to take a sip - just the smell makes me nauseated. My mom's the same way, must be genetic. I've always thought I'd like to be able to get drunk every once in a while because other people like to do it so much, but judging by the way people act both while drunk and afterwards, I don't think I'm missing all that much. ;>

Then when I graduated and moved back to California, most of my drinking friends were in other states. Every now and then, I like a daiquiri (which seems like an adult slurpee to me) or a bit of a taste of liqueur, or champagne for special occasions. But I'm really not interested in large quantities of alcohol in any form.

Hopitus - 01 May 2005 08:20 GMT Yeah, I did all my mixed-drink, embarrassing alcohol consumption in my post-high-school years up to about early 20's, so there's not very much I missed out on, including the hangovers. What I miss more these days and occasionally cheat on, as you see, is.....cheese. Just like a big rat.

AFAIK, Valio is the biggest dairy producer in Finland. Don't remember seeing anything called Finlandia here, maybe that name is just used for export. Valio produces a large range of dairy; milk, cream, yoghurt, cheese, sour cream, butter etc etc.

Never knew that before now. Ya learn something every day. :)

Doesn't Alko export Finlandia Vodka too? Or don't cheeses and vodkas "fight" in the same category namewise? Not sure about the legal issues here.

Hopitus - 30 Apr 2005 15:21 GMT No, Hopitus only speaks English and Spanish, not Finn. But nevertheless I sure did enjoy that "get to know us" link with the cows mooing louder the longer you looked @ it. Try Finlandia Cheese and you can enjoy the cows too. These cheese Finns have a great sense of humor.

Ya learn > something every day. :) Hopitus - 30 Apr 2005 17:01 GMT For Sherry: I stopped drinking alcohol around '90 because that's when I started taking heavy duty blood pressure meds. These days, I take a helluva lot more meds (post heart attack) and don't think it would be a good idea to drink any....although I have friends in same situation who do drink. I don't miss booze except when people are asking me why I don't drink in social occasions. I've taken to holding a tall glass of quinine water (tonic) full of lime peels & cherries....friends have even tasted and think it's a strong HariKari ROFLMAO. At least it shuts everybody up. Finn girls: I thought of something: could the Finlandia cheese co.- Valio - possibly be older than the vodka co.? I can't see where they would be anything but compatible to consume together....my long-ago Finn doctor friends were always arguing w/Swedes re the respective merits of their countries' vodkas, I do recall.

Hehe. The whole Finlandia - Absolut controversy.
I suppose it would be more of a problem if someone tried to market some other drink under the name of Finlandia. As I said, there's no cheese called Finlandia marketed in Finland, but I think Valio is older than the vodka. Just a gut feeling, though.
