Molly and Jake are currently involved in a research project on the relative attributes of Jay's vs. Mockingbirds.

Your cats are precious. ;)

There was a clip on America's Funniest Home Videos, years ago, showing a jay going after an orange tabby. Every time the bird swooped down and pecked the cat, the poor kitty did one of those anti-gravity vertical leaps, spinning around or sometimes somersaulting as it tried to avoid the peck and see where its feathered assailant was coming from.
I don't remember if that particular clip won, but I do think it was among the finalists. LOL. Poor cat!

And yes, that cat video did win the grand >prize for that show!!!! Mockingbirds (an American bird that imitates the calls of other kinds of birds, in order to lay claim to a larger territory) are even bolder. Years ago, a pair of mockingbirds built their nest in a bush next to my father's front porch. Not only would they dive at anyone who came near their nest, they would sometimes peck you on the way by. Fortunately, they weren't large enough for the peck to do much damage. On one occasion, I heard the mockingbird making a big fuss, and discovered that my parents' cat was under a chair on the porch, crouched as far to the back as she could manage. The mockingbird was striding back and forth on the porch (walking!), only a couple of feet away from the cat. The cat could easily have pounced on the bird, but was intimidated by the bird's sheer bravado and noisiness. I let the cat into the house, and she didn't ask to go out again for several hours.

My college campus was colonized by mockingbirds on one end (by Quaker Parakeets on the other end, but that's another story ;)), and they were absolutely dangerous in the springtime. Crazy birds.

Marina - 01 May 2005 05:16 GMT > Hope the link works At least that bird doesn't have any illusions of grandeur. Not like the tiny House Martins that have been diving at cats and hoomins alike out on the island the last couple of years. I'll never forget the deeply offended look on Frank's face when he was peacefully ambling along, coming up to Meowmie from some scritches, and suddenly, out of the blue, comes a House Martin hurtling towards him. He shied to the side, and then looked at me as if to say, 'Blimey! Can't a fella have some peace and quiet around here?' (Pic of a House Martin here: http://www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/PBurrows/images/aut02/pages/House-Martin.htm)

What a cute little bird! :o) And if it's as small of a birdy as it seems to be, from the picture, then it must be counting solely on bravado to prevent its feline targets from launching a counter-attack.
I hope the House Martins don't try that on a kitty with the "It's moving, therefore it's a toy" mindset that Captain and Stanley have. ;o) These two guys loooooove to chase anything that moves.
