My cats keep losing their breakaway collars (on which I
write my cell phone #) when playing outside.
Would it be possible to somehow mark their fur
with a die to make it obvious that they are pets? I've
considered writing my cell phone number on them with a
permanent marker, but I wonder about toxicity issues.
Your thoughts? Thanks!

Now I've never done this but i have taken red marker and marked the fur
where I needed the vet to do a needle biopsy on. Barney had such thick fur
that when I found a lump it sometimes was hard to for the vet to find it
later and I couldn't rely on Mike to find it either so I started marking
them with marker prior to his vet visits.

That's probably not a good idea. How about getting them microchipped?

Microchips aren't obvious to the casual observer. You should still get
this done, however.

What about a collar tag that says, "I'm microchipped!"
Okay, it was just a thought . . .

The OP indicated the cats lose the breakaway collars. I tend to think this
is a case of outdoor cats. Persia is strictly is indoor, is microchipped
and still wears a collar with a tag indicating she's microchipped.
Permanent Markers... if the OP ever smelled them they'd never consider
marking a cat in this manner.

I let them out around sunset for a couple of hours. That's when
they manage to lose their collars

Poor cat :(

Agreed, those markers stink. My girfriend used (human) hair die to mark
a spot on her cat. 6 months later, the color is still there. Writing a phone
number on fur is much harder though.

I won't get into the indoor/outdoor debate. Suffice to say someone had
declawed Persia before she came to me; she has no natural defenses so OUT is
not an option. I also live on a very busy street corner. 'Nuff said.

Long hair or short? You could probably do it with a very stiff artists's
brush if the fur is short. Long, no way.

Have you tried a totally elasticized collar? I've been using this type of
collar for 15 years and haven't had a cat lose one yet.

I'm glad to hear that they work, I never heard anyone say they've lost them
before. I will go out and buy some tomorrow for my two cats to wear on
weekends when the folks come up to their cabins. Always afraid they'll scoop
one of the cats up and take em back south with them. Resisted the collars
cause there are a lot of things to get snagged on here. You would think
they'd come up with an ID tag that could clip onto the hair or something,
like a braid.

AR-15 or a clone?

No, a bolt action CZ rifle.

Damn fine choice.
I picked up a 452 VT last summer and it's the best 22 RF I've ever had.
Sub-dime groups at 50 yards.
And I'll swear that Ceska Zbrojovka makes the best set trigger in
the world. I've been eyeing one of those 550 VT laminates in .308 for a while,
now.

It seems that once a cat learns to use both back feet at once
to get rid of the collar, nothing is going to work again.
My city gov't requires cats to wear a tag on her collar. The problem
is the collar is never where the cat is for long. She also seems
ot be in major distress when I put the collar back on.

Exactly--my cats totally hate collars. To make collars
tolerable I have to make them really loose. That makes
them easy to lose, however.

Even if there were a convenient and non-toxic way available to dye a cat's
fur in the image of a faux collar, the way cats shed their fur, you'd have
to keep doing it repeatedly.
There are a couple of other steps you can take that would be easier on you
and the cats. Have the cats microchipped, so they'll always be able to be
IDed, even if they've lost their collars. And see about training them to
get used to wearing non-breakaway collars, so you can put a regular ID tag
on them. Or, if you prefer, there are collars that you can have custom
information embroidered onto them (such as your cell phone number and the
pet's name). If you don't want them to wear a collar and tag, an
embroidered collar might be the answer.

But isn't the whole point of breakaway collars to prevent the cat from
choking or otherwise injuring itself? If normal collars were safe for
adventurous cats, I doubt any of us would use breakaways.

I'm a little leery of both the non-breakaway (strangulation possible?)
collars and hoomin hair dye (which I use) as w/all the "pre-testing"
cautions re hoomins possible allergic reactions, what if it got on cat's
skin and caused some reaction? You have here (me) a person so nervous re
cats possibly escaping in the OUT in a neighborhood full of huge rotties and
even bigger d-pets running loose that I only sat beside them as they ate
grass confined in a big dog cage w/plastic bottom taken out! However......
did someone mention an elastic-type collar on which you might hang a tiny
tube w/411 re your address, phone, etc inside? Where you would get this tube
I dunno....

I can't think of any way to mark there fur, but if you haven't already,
I would have them microchipped.

Is this what they refer to as "the mark of the beast"?

Have you considered gluing one of those styrofoam Union "76" balls to your
cat's tail? Maybe a little orange flag on their tail, like they put on
dune buggy whips? (LOL)
Mel - 09 May 2005 21:35 GMT
oh, oh, thats sooooo awful! (meanwhile I am laughing my head off here, just
so you know the tone I have taken *G*)
too too funny, as I can just picture this cat with that flag glued to his
tale- - - too bad I am not a graphic artist, or I would paint that image.
!!!
Thank you for the laugh! :)

Anytime Mel! Laughing at your cat is what keeps them humble and wondering.
