So far this group has coined the phrases "Upside-Downy Head", "The
Zoomies" and now, I wish to introduce a new cat phenomenon, "The
Rollies." My late, beloved Isadora favored a nice, relatively clean
patch of sunwarmed concrete for this pursuit. She would fling her self
down, and just ecstatically roll around on that patch of ground on her
back, wriggling her shoulders and hips, kicking her little legs, and
generally acting euphoric for at least a minute or two.
This morning, I was getting ready for work, and Nina was demonstrating
HER version of the "Rollies" on the seat of my desk chair. She also
pulled the classic "I meant to do that" look when she went rolling off
the EDGE of the seat. Sat there and non-chalantly washed a paw, very
calm and dignified. Acted like she didn't hear me when I laughed at
her. =o)
Have anybody else's cats put on this enormously funny and appealing
performance as far as you've had the opportunity to notice?

Yes, Bandit does that every morning all over my bed after I make it. I

and leave her! ;>

Stinky likes to fool around on the stairs-- he can find dozens of
things to do with them. They're covered with carpet, and ever since
he was a hoolikitten, he loves to attack them with bunny kicks. He
lies on his back on one step, and grabs the evil upper step with his
front paws, and bites and kicks the living spit out of it. And
sometimes he just whips himself into such a little frenzy that he goes
rolling down the stairs. He looks like a little sideways tornado. ;)

Yep, when I have a used swim towel that smells like chlorine, Mischief
rolls all over it like she's in Heaven. Even Imp will do the same
thing, but he's more into bunnykicking the towel instead of the Rollies

Absolutely. Usually on the driveway one its sunwarmed.
Hard to believe that rolling around on that can make them feel as ecstatic
as they look doing it.

Yup, HRFL Tiger does it on a regular basis, usually when he's wanting my

Mine do this in the sun, too, especially on the warm cement. :)

As far as I've observed, Persia doesn't do the "Rollies" (but I love the
phrase!). However, she does an abbreviated version which I call
"Rubber-Necking". She'll be laying on her side and if she spots me she
starts to rub her head back and forth (sometimes upside-downy) on the floor
while the rest of her remains motionless. It's like her head is on a spring

Harri Roadcat will do this when we're on a kitten walk if we happen upon
a nice patch of soft sand. It's really something to see!

Here's one of Nikki doing it in a patch of sand when we were out for
walkies. She usually does it a couple of times on every walk.

Both F rank and Nikki love rolling around on the sunwarm cliffs on the
island. I debuted on rpca with the story of how Frank got so caught up
in his rolling, he didn't notice he was approaching a pothole full of
rainwater. For the full story, see Flippy's catpage:

I no longer let my cats outside; but when I used to, they would roll
in the gritty driveway like they had an itchy back. Just twisting and
turning and grinding the grit into their fur. It made my back itch
watching them! LOL! Nothing more pleasureable than a good
backscratching.

I rarely caught him at it, but Pan used to love dust baths, which I presume
was his version of the rollies performed in a nice patch of dry dirt. He
was rarely more affectionate toward me than the times when he'd come home
all dusty and ask to be patted and scritched. =o)

Oh yes. Killer used to do that - and a very impressive WHUMPF it was when 25
pounds of lead-wrapped-in-an-immense-cloud-of-long-white-fur hit the floor,
too!

Absolutely...I call it the "come hither"pose. We do the Rollies and then
look at the human...beeeggggging them to rub the soft warm belly. So I will
now call it the "Come hither Rollies".

Oh yes! Rita does that all the time! She tends to avoid curling up
in a ball when she lays down, instead she stretches out as far as
she possibly can, making a Long Kitty. Then she rolls over, without
realizing that she's too close to the edge of the couch. It's
absolutely hysterical and keeps me well amused.
And she's still bringing her toy mice into my bed to play for most
of the night. I think I have claw marks all over my back (and butt)
from her trying to get me to roll off of her toy!

I had one long-haired cat who used to do the "sun-baked
cement" Rollie - you wouldn't believe the nice, thick,
unclippable mats it produced!

OK Shiral, you *made* me do it :)
http://www.geocities.com/tarakhome/index.html
An old video clip, one from 1999, but features a lot of this kind of
behaviour. Silly and fun vid - note Hannah's (the black and white cat's)
inability to completely roll over, due to "Fat Fur Syndrome", a terrible
disorder that affects some cats and makes them appear to be carrying excess
weight, when it's *actually* not fat, it's fat *fur*. Yes, that's it. I was
tempted to add "Godzilla-style" camera shakes to the bit where she's walking
across the table, but thought better of it.
Also, Spooky's (black cat's) masterful roll right off the edge of the
verandah. She also meant to do that one.

PS I've been making these things a long time, I've just realised.
PPS I really should look for some place to host them properly one of these
days . . .
PPPS Sorry for not answering a lot of the replies here, just so short of
time right now. Your replies are all helping me to let go of Princess and
Squeaker, and knowing that others are appreciating these videos is giving me
more motivation to finish them properly, which is an important part of the
grieving process for me . . . so really just: thanks everyone. Thankyou for
being a community which understands about the joy -and sorrow - that cats
can bring to your life.

At the time, I hadn't seen the Austin Powers movies, but every time I watch
