If you're a birdwatcher, or bird lover, this should make you
delirious.  A giant ivory-billed woodpecker, last seen in the
1940s(!!!) has been spotted -- and videoed-- in an Arkansas swamp.

I always felt truly gypped that thisfantastic  bird had been driven
to extinction before my time.  It just feels indescribably good that
there may be a few of them hanging on.  May they continue in peace.

I have seen lots of pileated, and that's a nice bird, but the ivory
bill is supposed to be like a "pileated on steroids."  I've only seen
pictures, of course, but they look breathtaking.

I would love to see one, too, but I'm just glad to know that they are
around.

Did you see the video clip? They showed it on the news tonight. It's pretty
exciting to know they are there.

I'm glad they've documented the resurgence of this wonderful bird.  I hope
they can document more about it and for people to stop destroying their
habitat.  I hate that humans think they are the only creatures occupying
this earth.  Drives me nuts.  Thanks for sharing this, Theresa.

Your woodpecker is famous, Theresa! His Arkansas sightings made our local
papers...and I always kinda
liked 'peckers....not as much as owls, but simply because
they annoy the h**l out of people.......

I have a male red-bellied woodpecker that comes around.  I have a metal
chimney and he gets up there on the roof and bang! bang! bang!   Announcing
his territory.  First time I heard it I thought someone was on my patio
making a drum out of my kettle grill!  Seriously, I checked to see if
someone was on my patio.  Then I spotted this big woodpecker on the roof by
the chimney.

I also had a pair of tiny downey's who eat at my suet feeder.  I used to
have a sweetgum tree in the corner of my patio but the apartment management
cut it down :(  I'd watch the tiny downey's scoot up and down the tree and
hop over to my suet feeder for hours.)  They still come if I put out suet
but it's not the same as watching them do the scoot up and down the tree
thing.  I love watching woodpeckers!

I like them too! Tom was very excited about the ivory bill, he even
mentioned it in his Daily Muse... :)
He's a big time bird nerd, which is probably why we keep a steady supply
of food for various species in our half a dozen bird feeders.
I'm telling you, we're suckers for feeding critters...

We have a lot of little woodpeckers here-- downy woodpeckers, they are
tiny guys, but they make BIG noise.  The thing that cracks me up about
these little guys is that they prefer to drum things that make LOUD
noises--  they like to drum on aluminum siding, and metal garbage can
lids.  Little b*st*rd birds. ;)

But they are soooo cute!  I remember the first time I pulled into the
driveway after I'd hung my suet feeder... I can see my patio fence from the
driveway.  I stopped - what's that?  A tiny male downey hanging on the side
of the fence.  I'd never seen one before but I knew.  So I drove on in,
parked and ran to get my bird book.  Sure enough!  I went out on the patio
and sat on the swing and watched him all afternoon alternately eating the
suet, climbing the fence and my (then) tree.  His mate joined him.  It was
quite a sight to watch the two of them scurrying around!  Too cute.

Yes, they are darn cute.  They are the only woodpecker that lives
around here in large numbers.   When I go into the park for an early
morning run, I can hear them drumming.

I have a couple of bird ID books that showed a picture of an Ivory Billed
woodpecker, even though the notation said that the bird was believed to be
extinct. (Actually, the one book is an updated edition of the previous
one, so they have a lot of similar content.)

I've always wondered why a graphic of a possibly extinct bird was
included. But now I get it. It's because they wanted to be SURE that if
someone saw the bird, they'd recognize it and realize that the bird wasn't
extinct after all.

This is great news! :o)

It's always a good thing to have more birdies in the world!
