Beast stopped eating the day after we arrived back in PA, Tuesday, his
yowling went harsher and when yesterday he wouldn't even sniff the
sausage patty brought home from breakfast - it was as though he waited
to get "home".  His cairn is just a step from Max's.  I'm surprised at
the depth of emotion I'm going through, his long indomitable fight
against his ailments made today seem inevitable, but it has been a long
journey together - he turned up as an adult 18 yrs ago this summer.

Beastie was crouched in the rain when I gathered him up this morning, so
typical for he would go out in any weather, the worse the better it
seemed and he would come back to bed several times a night, wet and
bedraggled, to show how brave he was.  Winter of 2000 I had to shovel
out a foot of snow from 200' of driveway and Florida-born Beast stayed
with me the whole 2hours, talking to me all the while about this
strange cold white stuff.  He would never be denied.  he did it his way.

I made a fool of myself the whole drive to and at the vet's.  But it was
merciful - his heart stopped the very moment of the injection it seemed
as he got a two-handed scritch behind his ears.  Whatever attention one
gave Beast he always turned it into an ear scritch.  Rest in peace,
buddy. Norm

Oh, Norm, old friend of my first years on rpca, I'm crying as I send you
heartfelt condolence purrs for your
loss of your beloved old Beastie, who is now as beautiful as he ever was in
the companionship of the RB. You had
the courage to do what we hoomins can only do for our
cats when their time comes - to give him the last kind gift
of the needle and stay with him till his kitty spirit leaves you. Remember
all happy times w/him and he will live on
in your mind....as my RB beloveds do in mine.

No particular reason for you to remember - when Max left for the bridge
5yrs ago I posted to alt.cats.  I was so badly cut up and your and
others responses meant so much.  Later, when I asked where Hopitus had
gone to, a kind soul eMailed that you'd tired of the trolls and moved to
rpca and so I took refuge as well.  Thanks again for your and all the
others wishes.  Norm

Looks like some news-server hiccupped this year-old append.  Timely
though, for The Beast has been on my mind lately due to the RB
anniversary.

Not-so-strange department:  the guys has been reminding me more and more
of Beastie.  For example, Willie took to seeking attention at poolside
and ignoring getting wet in the process.  Willie too is the infallible
greeter when I arrive home as Beast was before him.  And Willie here
goes on his regular rounds, like Beast, and will also come to bed wet
from rain, another hallmark, to show his bravery.  Simon, as an older
cat, has a lot in common with Beast - the one thing I could do without
is his scrounging:  overturning the kitchen waste, prowling the
counters.

What a touching tribute to a tough guy who must have been quite a softie
inside. Someone of his years must have given you great wisdom to go with
great memories. Today in the heavens he's getting ear scritchies from
someone who, in earthlife, was unable to have known the love of a cat.

And don't think of it as making a fool of yourself. Real men love, real men
know and express their feelings, and have mercy in their hearts along with
strength. It may sound weird now, but you gave Beastie the kindest and most
merciful of gifts, taking away his pain and sending him to the place of
eternal summer with a loving ear scritchie. He will come back to you for
more someday, and neither of you will know pain anymore.

Blessed be,
Baha

Thanks so much for all the responses - I can't respond to them all and I
can't say I deserve them but the testaments to Beastie - well, he was a
soldier.  Katie says, her guardian.

Maybe some will recognize the guilt - his truculence for anything he
didn't want to do or not his idea, his yowling once his hyper-thyroidism
started, meant more than his share of being yelled at though I tried to
understand.  And he was almost never top-cat, Max being that for the 13
years they were together.  He was, though, the most playful older cat
I've ever had - even just 2 years ago he would still play with the wand
with the best of them:

Now that I'm back in PA I'll be more active here again.  Though I
haven't posted much I have tried to keep up and though unsaid lit
candles for others' loss - again, I do appreciate those for the Beast.
