Smokie Darling (Annie) - 23 Apr 2005 03:18 GMT That Li'l Bit's only pregnancy has produced 5 babies (yes, I said 5). Three white (ish), and two dark. She has decided that they must be under the "feeding table" (a converted end table), so I haven't been able to see the 4th and 5th babies very well.
Mom and babies are resting nicely now, I believe (since it's rather hard for me to get down to see them).

I just love bitties, but dang that first born has the biggest feet I've ever seen on a kitten!

Their faces are all wrinkly! And I can see in the pics how they fluff up once their fur dries!

They all seem to be doing super fine (touch wood). I had worried that she wasn't getting enough nutrients in the "regular" cat food (with the bits of turkey, pork, chicken and whatever other people food she'd tolerate).
She's been pretty hungry, so I have to fill the bowl, then put it where she can eat without moving away from the kits (she hadn't been eating 'til I tried that). So now, she just lies there with the nursing bitties and leans her head over to have a munch on her crunchies.
I'm getting a vision of the stereotypical "housewife" sitting on the sofa, eating bon-bons, and watching soap operas :-).
You know, the family here all had running bets about how many she'd have. They all pretty much said 2 or 3 (maybe 4 at the outside). I told them I've never been around a cat that had fewer than 5 (and was roundly pooh-poohed about it). Looks like I "win".

Tee hee! Although with six little bitties to feed, I'd say she was entitled. =o) My vet told me to just keep feeding Francesca whatever she asked for. Li'l bit will need enough food for four cats, I'd think!

> > > > Or here: > > > > [quoted text clipped - 33 lines] > the kittens but Otis was picked specially for him cos of his um lively > personality. Wasn't like this was planned, I suppose I could have just left Li'l Bit outside to have the kits and "maybe" survive, or maybe not, but then there would be 6 more unaltered ferals outside. All of "my" cats are fixed, by the time I talked to the vet, she was against desexing because she said it could (most likely would) kill her. I've got friends and family that will take the kittens (I'm going to have them all desexed), so that isn't a concern.
I know that even fixing these guys (and Li'l Bit when she weans the bitties) won't make a bit of difference. We've got one family with 8 cats, none of whom are fixed, and they are all breeding like bunnies. This is not so much an "mistake", but stupidity on the part of animal owners. Everyone thinks their cat/dog having kits/puppies is no big deal, but when you get millions of people thinking that, then there are tens of millions of animals.

Marcia,
I am very sorry for the previous post. One should always take a deep breath, and re-read something before sending it "off". I sounded (to me) very snippy, and I didn't mean to be.
Valid question, I do have people who will take the kittens (who won't take a kitten?), and will keep the cats they grow into. My granddaughter wants one, just trying to convince her Dad (she is, I'm not). I'll have them all desexed, as I said before, so that there won't be any other accidents. Li'l Bit will also be spayed once the kits are weaned.
Again, really sorry about "souding" off the way I did. It's been a really cranky day for me today.

[quoted text clipped - 35 lines] > > Smokie Darling (Annie) I didn't see your snippy post anyway, and when I re-read mine it might have looked as if I was "having a go" -I know accidents happen, it's just that here in the UK (or at least in my circle) you never hear of it, perhaps it's because we have less room to keep more than a couple of pets, or because there's so damn many in centres waiting to be homed that it's sad, so it must be going on here too. I apologise if I sounded rude, some people think it's cruel to neuter toms as it changes their personality. Otis has never sat on my knee since the day I brought him home de-bollocked (I am told Americans don't use the term bollocks so de-nutted!) I don't know why it's so weird. When I go to the Mediterranean countries that I love so much and see all the poor little underweight, diseased cats it makes me so angry and sad that they're not neutering them. Rant over!

I don't know about Lil' Bit, but Sonya is a rescue cat that we've been fostering for the local no-kill shelter. We're getting her spayed and adopting her, as well as getting Qui Gun Kit fixed and adopting him. There will be four kittens going up for adoption.

Well, the ones you're probably referring to, having read about them here, have been "rescues" being fostered or ferals that were brought in from outside. I don't think you'll find anyone on this group, whether living in the US or elsewhere, who thinks it is a good thing to breed cats.
Having said that, I am despairing of some of my RL neighbors who are allowing their cats to breed. I think some of this is because of people just not caring, but some of it is ignorance. Personally I don't understand taking on the responsibility of a living being without thinking about whether or not you can afford spaying/neutering and other vet care. Some people seem to think of pets as animate toys for their children, just as disposable when they become inconvenient (e.g. pregnant), as a pair of broken roller skates. This saddens and enrages me.
Hugs,

>It must be a US thing, letting cats > breed, over here I don't know anyone who't cat's had kittens, they all > seem to be neutered and come from rescue centres. That would be bliss. I hope that someday we can achieve that level of animal welfare - where each cat is a wanted cat. Many people here either don't care, "can't afford" to have their animals neutered, or want their cat to have kittens because they're "so cute". Then there are the breeders of "purebreds" - both of the professional and unprofessional variety. And as always, feral colonies that breed randomly. Pet overpopulation is a real problem here and thousands of perfectly healthy, tame animals are killed daily for lack of homes. That's why the spay and neuter campaigns here are so big.
> Having said that, > Otis was the product of a mistake, his mum was about to get neutered, > and a tom broke in and got to her, they had real problems placing all > the kittens but Otis was picked specially for him cos of his um lively > personality. All of mine are rescues. There's just way too many cats already here, to be supporting breeding.

I wonder where all the London ferals are, I haven't seen any in years, there must be some just don't know where, we do have lots of urban foxes though, which are beautiful - their cubs are awesome, but they do make a hell of a racket. I hate pet shops, I always encourage my friends to get their pets from rescue centres, I think pet shops just prey on your emotions, and I dont think they look after them well, taking them away from their mums too young, and cooping them up inside the shop. My friend has 5 rescue cats, they're lovely but it is hard in London to have so many, our gardens are small. I also would never buy a pedigree, I'm not bothered about what breed they are, so long as they have a reasonable personality (i.e. not Sid Vicious!)

Be reassured there are plenty of London ferals, despite the hard work of our Croydon CPL and the other area branches and rescue groups :-) They exist in many places - rambling back gardens that are neglected, industrial estates, waste ground and most of all in the grounds of the council estates of inner London. It's a tribute to the efforts of humane trappers and fosterers over 20 years or so, that you have made that comment. Many of my precious foster kits were ex-feral kittens, most of which tamed up well, and those that didn't, started a new life as farm or stables cats.
I love our urban foxes, we often hear them chattering and calling at dusk, and sunbathing on sunny days :-) Badgers, too.
kudos to you also for encouraging your friends to always get rescue cats - and, there are a surprising number of pure-bred cats that come into the foster homes, so the best of both worlds! Particularly Persians, but I've seen Siamese, Oriental, Tonkinese, Burmese, Chinchilla and British Blue as well...

I have always heard that we have feral cats in our city, surviving downtown on the scraps from fast food stores and bars, and hiding out under steps and sheds and in similar spots. But they say if you go out very late at night, after the bars close and before the office workers arrive, you'll see them. It seems a quite likely story to me; we certainly have rats, which you never see at normal times, but regularly see if you have a house along a river, or if (as happened recently) the rivers flood, forcing them out of their normal lairs.
My Betsy spent some time on the street but she wasn't quite feral, as we know who dumped her when they moved out of the province; their former landlady made some efforts to get them to be more responsible, but failed.
We don't have urban foxes, though; our foxes are resolutely rural, although they do get blamed for the disappearance of cats living in new subdivisions bordering on woods (ie fox habitat).
> I hate pet shops, I always encourage my > friends to get their pets from rescue centres, I think pet shops just > prey on your emotions, and I dont think they look after them well, > taking them away from their mums too young, and cooping them up inside > the shop. Our local pet shops rarely sell cats or dogs. I haven't seen any in quite a while, although at least one still has its display cage. I share your concerns about the practice.

I've always had a longing for certain pedigreed cats - usually, the traditional applehead Siamese - although in practice, my fondness for stripes seems to have won out. Some cat breeds are absolutely gorgeous. That being said, almost all of the local cats appear to be what the vets call 'Domestic Short Hair', with some "Persian" (usually 'Domestic Long Hair' in vet-talk; not the Persian-with-papers kind). Some people do have cat that look like they've got a pedigree of some sort. There are a *lot* of unwanted cats - the people involved in caring for them locally, like the SPCA, city Human Division and one or two small private groups, get quite overwhelmed, especially at certain times of the year. A lot of people don't seem to want to pay for spaying or neutering, or think that it is unnatural or cruel. And of course there are people who mean well but don't get the timing of the spaying quite right. I feel for them, because I would have been one of them if Mandy hadn't been very carefully watched and very unlucky in her escape attempts when she went into heat shortly before her vet-recommended spaying date.

Jo Firey - 24 Apr 2005 21:29 GMT Its awfully easy to screw up and have a cat get pregnant before you realize what is what. I'm guessing a lot of folks started life young and stupid like I did.
Even those who really do know better.
My brother and SIL got an adorable Persian cat. Cream with copper eyes and a pedigree as long as your arm. Now brother is well educated and SIL is a registered nurse. And they are parents of two children.
Well Crystal is lonely and back they go the the breeder and buy the sweetest grey Persian boycat to keep her company. The cats are mad about each other and peace reigns at home. Intention is to neuter little Sammy as he is not breeding quality. And to breed Crystal to the best Tom that can be found when the time comes.
You got it. Crystal ends up pregnant. They never saw any indication that she was in heat or that the cats were interested in each other in "that way"
We will ignore that the two cats were left home alone together all day most every day.
Result was seven beautiful kittens. They sold them all, without papers and with promises to neuter for checks made out to "Make a Wish".
By then Sammy had been neutered. Next heat cycle Crystal made it abundantly clear she would not mate with any other cat. No she was spayed as well.

There are 6 bitties, and Mom is so good with them, and she doesn't like being bothered (growl).
So, we have two light semi tabbies (creme and orange perhaps?), we have a black, we have two "regular" tabbies (dark and light stripes), and then we have a sort of speckled one. I'll take some more photos in a day or two, once they start to really show their colo(u)rs.

All of them? You'd end up with Li'l Bit as well, since she is NOT happy about the bit of handling we did this morning. She keeps trying to turn her back to the "open" side of the feeding table (just so's I can't see them, HA like *that'll* work).
Pretty much just leaving her alone, I open the door and check on them from there, so she knows I'm still here, and making sure all is well, but not stressing mom or bitties with too much handling just yet.
Smokie Darling (Annie) - who is having trouble staying away from the bitties, but I'm trying really, really hard.

It will direct you to the Yahoo pictures, starting with the "tuxedo" with stripes. Oh my gosh, but they are cuties (even if I do say so myself)! The hands belong to Paw.

It's amazing how tiny new bitties are when you see them cupped in adult human hands. Congratulations to GrandMeowmie and Grandpaw, and of course to Mama Li'l Bit. (We know what SHE'S going to be doing for the next eight weeks...)
(For all that, Victor, you're a braver person than I am to want ALL of them! =o)

At four weeks, Sonya's kittens are learning to play. Unfortunately, Mandy is trying to clean her room and play currently involves chasing her feet and climbing in whatever she is trying to clean. Mandy wants to put them under a laundry basket until she is done. Sonya and Mike are protesting such cruel and uncatlike behavior. I got woke up by the argument.

He appears to be completely black. Piewackett (RB) and Madison (RB) were both completely black
Of course, I have not done a "great" job of checking, since Mommy doesn't like the bitties being handled a bunch. He seems to be the only one who doesn't cry (the light tabbies have such BIG mouths), at least yet.
Mommy will sit with her head sticking out from under the table while I hold the bitty in my hands, and she'll rub her head against my hands (since I don't hold him "high up", I want her to be able to see the bitty I'm holding).
