Waaah, my car's wrecked :-(

It's 1:30 am here and I'm seriously bummed.  Can't even consider going
to bed after what's happened.
Took some friends to see a show, Thai dancing, etc...  Stopped at a
bar close to home for some beers afterwards.  Walked out to see my
drivers side door all smashed in and my window broken.  Luckily, there
was a policeman in another bar who got alerted and came out and got
the guy's info.  It was a big fancy truck from Bangkok.
We bought the cop some beer and he was pretty happy to help out after
that.  I have to be at the police station at 9 am and supposedly the
insurance guy from the guy who hit me will be there.  I sure hope I
don't get screwed in this ordeal, happens a lot to "farangs" since the
locals only see us as walking dollar signs.  But I reckon the guy that
hit me was richer than me anyway, his truck sure was worth multiple
times what my car is worth.  Good thing I only have an old car.
Dennis isn't going to be very happy when he comes home tomorrow.  Goes
to Florida for 1 week and the car's outta commission :-(
And I have 2 different sets of friends coming in the next 2 weeks who
need to be chauffeured around.  Waaaah!  I should have just stayed
home tonight, like I do every other night!!!

Awww!!!! What a drag.  I get the feeling that dealing with insurance
companies in Thailand.... Especially for a Farang, is gonna be no fun.  Good
luck with it all.

I came back to post this after doing some thinking: forgive me for
criticizing your temporary homeland there
but Thailand does not seem to me to be a hotbed of female respect and
independence....can't you take with you to the meeting @ police station
w/insurance rep and
possible truck owner a *male* of whatever ilk (I know
your DH won't make it back in time) to get down and dirty if they try to
screw you over financially? I would be
very uneasy unaccompanied with something similar - the bigger the better -
in a situation like that.....in a place like that....

Yes, I'm planning to take Prasit, a Thai driver for the company who
has been our friend for a long time and speaks decent English.  Keep
your fingers crossed for me, I'm about to leave for the police
station!  I'm a bit freaked out about driving in my car which has had
no window in it all night.  Going to do a "critter inspection" under
the seats before getting in.

This is a little late, but we are purring for your meeting with the

Oh no! Yesterday must have the day for accidents. Our son borrowed our
truck, and somebody plowed into the back of him while he was at a red
light. Nobody hurt, and he was driving the old farm truck,
un-affectionatly known as "Ole Spot" because the paint's peeling all
over anyway. So we told the kid (he was 21) we weren't even going to
turn it in on his insurance. He about cried. Told him someday I expect
him to remember this and to "pay it forward" though-- and give somebody
else a break sometime in his lifetime.

But if he was hit from behind, wouldn't it be the other drivers fault?

Yeah, the other driver was the 21 year old kid. I called him to let him
know we weren't going to pursue it. It would be kind of stupid for us
to anyway since it's a 12 year old truck that already looks horrible. I
know what happens to a 21-year-old male when a claim goes against their
insurance. It skyrockets or they cancel them.

That is also my philosophy in terms of helping others.  I spent many hours
each week over the course of a year giving extra assistance to one of our
graduate students, and I wrote *numerous* letters of recommendation for him.
After he obtained his "dream job," he tried to give me a check to thank me
for the extra time spent.  I declined but told him basically what you
said -- that he should think of this and give extra assistance to others if
the opportunity arose.  I have learned from other sources that he has done
this many times over, so I feel fully compensated.

I'm sorry, Britta.  What a pain! Dealing with this kind of thing is bad
enough in the U.S. I can imagine it would be a mega-headache in Thailand.
Hang tough, and BE tough!  Right now, you may be your own best advocate.

Good luck to you,

Ok, just got back from the police station.  My Thai friend had gone to
his hometown for the weekend, so he wasn't able to be there with me,
but he did interpret on the phone.  Thank gawd for cell phones!
Anyway, the guy's insurance will pay for everything to be fixed.  But
it doesn't cover for me to have a replacement vehicle.  I have to take
the car to a certain garage and they are busy until May 2nd.  Once I
get it in, it will take at least a week.  My friend can get me a
pretty cheap rental car but I guess I'll just drive the car as is
until May 2 and then get the rental and pay for it myself.
I'm going to take the car to the hangar and have the engineers rig up
some sort of thick clear plastic over the missing window.  At least it
will keep the wind out and the aircon in.  I'll have to carry a big
bag with the car papers and not leave any valuables in the car.
I guess it could have turned out a lot worse.  Dennis returns in 24
hours, will he ever be surprised when he sees the car!

Britta,

Have you checked with your own insurance company to see it they will cover
the cost of a rental replacement?  I am basing this on my own insurance
policy in the U.S., but it *does* cover replacement cost if the other
insurer does not.  On the other hand, you would also need to carefully
consider whether that could raise your rates.  The catch-22 there is that
insurers will often raise rates following an accident even when the other
company does pick up the tab.  My policy says that can be done only if there
is more than one accident in a year's time (and I don't know how your
problem would be appraised since you were not even in the car at the time).
That was actually a hit-and-run.

Well, I think it was more of a hit-and-stay since the guy waited
outside for us to come out of the bar.  I think he only stayed because
the cop was in another bar and saw him, so he couldn't run.  But
nevertheless, he stuck around.
In Thailand, you can't get full insurance if your car is older than 10
years.  Our 1989 Nissan certainly doesn't qualify, so all we have is
liability.  No rental car will be covered with that.
But my friend said he can get me an older car for $150 CDN for 10
days, so that's not bad.  I'm sure you think that's dirt cheap, but
after living in Thailand for 4 years, it sounds kinda expensive to me
;-)
So I'll drive my car with plastic over the window until May 2, then
get the rental.  The timing actually works out because one set of
friends arrives on May 1, so I can avoid having to chauffeur them
around in my beater.

Oh, sorry, I didn't think about the age of your car.  We can get full
insurance in the U.S. for older models, but it doesn't make sense (unless
they qualify as true antiques).  The cost of the insurance would far
outweigh any benefits.

When I had a teenage male driver in the family, I realized that
sometimes the cost of insurance outweighs benefits *anyway*. We paid
IIRC $2,000 a year extra in premiums so that he could drive an
8-year-old car. The kid had a perfect driving record. Insurance started
looking like legalized extortion to me back then.
Now I hear that insurance companys are rating drivers based partly on
their credit report. That isn't fair. Sometimes good, safe-driving
people can fall on hard times and ruin their credit through no fault of
their own, and it's doesn't affect their risk, IMO. It's just an excuse
for insurance companies to charge higher premiums.

I was shocked at how much our insurance went down after we bought a
house and packaged the cars with the house policy.  We only pay around
$800/yr. total for a '03 Tundra ExtraCab, '03 RAV4S and a '97 Saturn
SC2.  I used to pay almost that in '98 for my old RAV4 alone, when I
lived in Indy...
