In his middle years, Rowdy has revealed himself to be a
latent and now overt woolsucker! In s.FL we never had
much wool out at all, even in winter, so his hidden vice remained unknown to
me *until* we moved here to MileHigh and it got cold. Being unpleasantly
(not life-threateningly) allergic to the feathers they stuff into down
cold-weather bedding and outerwear, I opted to buy several Woolrich
wool-blend blankets of various thicknesses, which was a very wise decision,
considering if I had taken advice of CO natives about the down stuff I
would've spent every night gasping for breath under those feathers....also
have collected several handknit wool throws at the Salvation Army for very
cheap, and
they are pleasant to cuddle under while watching tv in
living room. I have had, over the years, other woolsuckers, my RB beloved
Dur Dur included. Rowdy
began by starting on the wool blanket covering the bed, but soon discovered
the knit/crocheted throws had much
more "give" and his paws became pleasantly entangled in
the loosely woven wool. Purring as loud as he ever does,
he has "taken possession" of the largest of these throws,
and this am upon arising I discovered during the night he
had dragged the thing completely off the bed and down the hall where after
no doubt having his fill of woolsucking (I call it "noozing") he had passed
out atop
the bunched-up throw. I don't know what causes these
cats to get into woolsucking (some have done it on piles
of freshly-laundered clothes, before they were folded)
but I can't punish or fuss @ Rowdy for this disgusting but harmless fetish
of his.
Does anyone else have a wool/cloth sucking cat? If so,
do you just put up w/it like I do? Maluce does not indulge in such
undignified behavior.....

Little Mimi was an inveterate woolsucker and smurgler. She could be
pretty rude about it, too. She wouldn't wait for you to take off the
sweater. ;) She used to spend seemingly hours trying to shove her
head into her daddy's (my ex) armpit when he wore a particular
sweater. When we split, he left the sweater for her.
My friend Reggie, the orange bakery cat is a terrifying wool smurgler,
and he's no petite little girl. :)

ROFL Theresa: Rowdy weighs in @ 19# so maybe he
too qualifies as "terrifying wool smurgler" when he gets
going on that knit throw! Yes, these "noozers" seem
oblivious to social disapproval, which he receiveds bigtime from both me and
Maluce.....

Awww. I didn't know the BT was a wool smurgler. It's an interesting
trait, I read up on it once and learned it's called "Pica" behavior and
is actually genetic, and they're usually Siamese. I like "wool
smurgler" better, though!

I don't think there's anything Siamese about Reggie-- he's the classic
gigantic orange tabby guy. He has a wonderfully, sweet, innocent
face, which he uses to get you to bend over and pet him, whereupon he
somehow attaches his twenty pounds to your sweater, and ends up around
your neck. ;)

<eek> <thud>
Big old goofy orange tabby boys! My favorite! He sounds like Bosley.
Bosley's 14 lbs. so far, but he's the *tallest* cat I ever saw. Long
legged, clumsy. When he runs, he gallops. He's got the face, too. He's
still a teenager. I can see him someday being one of those grand old
huge orange cats that sits around snoozing and looking wise. Someday.
Right now he's just goofy.

Yep, Samuel. He loves to smurgle, but he doesn't restrict himself to
wool. Wool is probably his favorite, but we have a synthetic blend
blanket on the bed that he smurgles just about every night. ALl of the
kitties knead at least once in a while, but Sammy does it all the time
and is the only to also suck what he's kneading.
We wouldn't mind it quite so much, but even after trimming his claws
they tend to come just a little bit through the top blanket.

Sammy hops her 15 pounds onto my lap and starts sucking her back toe while
kneading my (admittedly nicely flabby) belly. The only problems is the "wet
spot" I have on my lap when she's done! ;>

Betty seems to woolsuck only under ideal conditions. She suck the lip
of the wooly lining of the cat bed, because there's a nice lip there
for her to suck, but she hasn't done it in about a year or so.
Probably Rowdy started woolsucking because your wool blankets are from
the Salivation Army.

No, no, Tak, I must've given wrong impression. Wool
blankets were brand new from Woolrich outlet in a nearby town, and they cost
a pretty penny. But they were and are for the *bed* and this former
Floridian was'very unhappy in l.r. watching tv even w/heaters going
full blast. I didn't want to spend lots more $ on "throws"
so I went over to several thrift shops where there is always an abundance of
hand-knit afghans and small blankies people have knit and eventually ended
up there.
But you're right, Rowdy likes the used (of course I wash them immediately on
getting home) things much more than he did sucking on the blankets spread on
the bed.
He can wrap himself up in the afghans and really go to town with them, then
he sleeps it off, as I said, still wrapped in the tangled wool!

OMG Couldn't figure out Theresa's post till I went back and carefully reread
yours, Tak. Your pun is right on the
$ - *yes, Rowdy drools* as he is doing his thing w/the
woolies! I doubt I'll ever put them away (blankets, yes,
throws no) as unllike where I moved from it gets cold here @ night - as soon
as sun disappears, that temp just
drops like a stone. So he will always have a supply to nooze on here.

Tucker loves to "nurse," as we call it, on my daughter's cotton thermal
blanket.
