Over on an e-mail list I'm on, there's someone who's normally a very
kind person (she fosters d-pets all the time) who now has a kitten she
plans to have declawed. I'm assuming she just doesn't realize what
she's about to do, so I need links to show her just why this is such a
bad move.

TIA!

Thanks for trying, gang, but I got the cyber equivalent of sticking
fingers in ears and yelling "LA LA LA I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOU SO I'M
NOT GOING TO".

I unsubbed from that list, and told her her attitude toward cats was
why.

I just don't have the energy to fight hopeless battles. Megan, shut
up.

*WHAT* is THAT all about?

Even if you hate Megan, her website is THE best anti-declaw website on
the net. If you want info and data to change someone's mind, it's
there.

She just meant Megan might now come on and rant at her for not hounding this
woman more.

Oh, ok.  I couldn't for the life of me figure out where *that* was
coming from.  megan's site is de facto the best anti-declaw site on the
net.  No reason it can't just be sent as a link - to anyone.

Were you not here to see how Megan flamed Ginger-lyn for not keeping a
foster she adopted to someone whom she thought *might* - not would, but
*might* - declaw a cat?  THAT is *WHAT* that is about.  What are you now,
Megan's defender and protector???

Please, don't. Please, just stop it right now. Dredging all that up
again is just inflammatory, and serves no purpose but to incite
ugliness.  No matter what you think about Megan, all that is suggested
is using her website for a reference tool, and it IS a good reference
tool. If Seanette doesn't want to, I am sure we can find her another
website. Why don't we spend our energy looking for one for her, instead
of picking another argument over something that happened months ago?

Then please ask this of Lyn also.  She should not have "shouted" at Seanette
when Seanette asked not to be flamed like Ginger-lyn was (a not unfair
request given the history here).

I really am *not* the one starting these little bruhahas, but I *am* the
*only* one being scolded about them when I respond (even mildly and not in
kind).

But Seanette is an extremely intelligent woman. If she were offended, I
bet she could have worked through it just fine. Sometimes it's better
for a 3rd party, especially one who has a past history of conflict with
both Megan and Lyn, to just sit back and let them resolve
misunderstanding without jumping in with a highly inflammatory post.
That's all I meant. I'm not scolding anyone. It takes two. Believe me,
I know this. It has taken me about five years on usenet to figure it
out.

Back to Seanett's quandary, I checked Google...there's a plethora of
good websites out there. I can't find the one I used to use to print a
brochure from. Here are three I thought were interesting:

http://www.declawing.com/htmls/declawing.htm

http://www.declaw.lisaviolet.com/

www.avar.org/avar_cat_declawing.html

Then I apologize for taking offense, Sherry - I will admit I'm still a bit
singed around the edges and jumpy when it comes to these two (I've never
before even heard some of the names I've been called in the last week or so!

WTF is this about?  All I said is that Megan's site is the best
anti-declaw site on the net.  It is.  I wish people would quit dragging
me into their pissing wars.  I have absolutely nothing against Seanette
- I just couldn't understand what she was talking about.  And Megan and
I don't see eye-to-eye on a number of issues but she's still the best
resource when it comes to declawing.

Well, whatever you're referencing, count me out.  I'm not pissing on
anyone.
Sheesh.

Seanette's examples to the woman are falling on deaf ears.  The woman
doesn't want to hear about the reasons not to declaw, period.  Sometimes you
simply cannot change people's minds.  That's all Seanette was saying.

That one website with the photos is pretty compelling. It's hard to
believe someone who really loved cats could go through with the surgery
after seeing that one. I ought to knock on wood, because I hate to jinx
a good run, but to date, I have never have anyone I couldn't talk out
of declaw. Not that I was that convincing, all I did was explain and
hand them stuff I'd printed off the internet. It's just that the vast
majority of people who I crossed paths with who wanted to declaw just
didn't know anything about the surgery. They thought it was like
apermanent manicure or something. Once they understand it, there was no
question for them anymore. Good for Seanette for trying. I hope she's
able to convince them.

I hope so.  Persia came to me front declawed and it sort of breaks my heart
when she curls her little front "fingers" on me.  She's such a lady I'm sure
she wouldn't use claws unless she was annoyed.  But when she kneads my side
at night, or reclines on me when I'm reading and is feeling lovey, she purrs
up a storm and I feel her front paws curling.  Fortunately, she has shown
*no* negative symptoms from the surgery but I can't stand to think about
what she went through as a kitten when they did that to her.

I didn't know Persia was declawed. I can't believe I missed that, as
long as I've been reading about her. It sounds like she is one of the
lucky ones in more ways than one.  She probably doesn't have any
adverse affects or she wouldn't be so well-adjusted and sweet-natured
now.

No website will do anything to persuade someone who refuses to read
it.

I do too.  I recently taslked my sister out of doing it.  She was even
doing to declaw her cat that has only *one* front leg.  She just didn't
know what it entailed.

CatNipped,

Please heed Sherry's plea and don't start in.   Isn't saying "she started
it" exactly what children say when they get caught?  I'd like to think you
are above all that childishness.

You have a real talent for writing and I enjoy your Sammy stories and would
like to see more.

Of course, you can write whatever you like, but for what it's worth, the
more you participate in these flame wars, the less likely I am to open the
post when I see your name.  That makes me sad.

If -L- is Lynn, I'd say she did not shout at Seanette.  Seanette asked for
anti-declaw links, and -L- suggested one of the best links around.  Phil P
has another source of information.

If you are referring to another person who actually "shouted" at Seanette, I
didn't see it because I probably have killfiled that person.

I hope you understand that my purpose is not to "scold" you or hurt you.  I
care about you. I believe you are a kind-hearted person with a delightful
sense of humor.  It's to let you know that you have so much to contribute
and resorting to childish bickering does not do you justice.

Annie

Seanette:

"I just don't have the energy to fight hopeless battles. Megan, shut up."

Lyn (~L~):
"*WHAT* is THAT all about?"

Thanks Annie, I'm out of it now, but as I told Sherry, I would really
appreciate equal treatment for *anyone* who is out of line, not just me.  It
may sound childish, but it is hurtful for be singled out for something when
I am responding in a milder manner than what I was responding to.

If I may butt in here briefly . . . .

Seannette, you done good.  You did the best you could, and that is all
any of us can do.

As for the rest, I do not care for Megan, as you might guess.
However, *I* sent copies from her site to the woman who adopted
Morganna/Tallulah.  Good information is good information, no matter
how I feel about the person generating it.

I am really sorry she would not listen to you. I hope someone else
will get through to her. What is the reason for her wanting to declaw
the cat?

I'm sorry to hear that, but you can't force somebody to educate themselves
if they don't want to hear it, and you can't shove empathy down their throat
if they don't already have it.  Purrs that the little furbaby will at least
get through the pain as quickly as possible and will adjust to life without
claws without developing problems that will cause this numbskull to dump
him/her.
