Harri the Denver (almost) Roadcat

Dan M - 15 Apr 2005 22:06 GMT Busy couple of days! We've been running really hard since Weds afternoon (as in only 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night). We have been able to get kitty walks in, though. Weds night (Thurs morning actually, 4 AM-ish) we walked at the rest area just south of St. George, UT. Harri loves this place for it's big east-side "wild area" that's screened from the parking area by a hill. This time, though, she made a beeline for the vicinity of the buildings - probably since there was so little traffic and no people around.
Last night we stopped earlier than planned, as I sort of smoked by brakes coming down the Green River grade in Utah. I was on the phone with Nancy while I was parking, and the whole time Harri was squeaking up a storm. My interpretation of her squeaks went something like "Hey, Pa, we're stopping. Look, there's a wide open space. And it's dark. Like in kitty darkwalk? And there's my kittying gear on the dash. Come on, hang up the phone and let's go for a walk...". So,, I hung up the phone, hooker her up, and went for a walk! It was a short one, though, since tnhe wind was REALLY howling.
Tonight should be interesting. We're about 20 miles west of Denver, at the truck stop in Wheat Ridge. There isn't much of a kitty walk area here, just about a 10 foot wide grass strip behind the truck parking area. We'll see how interested Harri in that. I'm hoping she likes it, since she has been a VERY patient girl this trip!

Hey guy, you drove right past me! I'm in Palisade (about 110 miles East of Green River). If I'd known you were coming by, I would have been at Exit 42 and waved as you passed by.
At least the wind in the "Grand Valley" has calmed down (Fruita, Grand Junction, Clifton, and Palisade are all in the Grand Valley), or you would have thought it was a nice breeze in Green River, UT (we stop there on every trip to Nevada, and we go frequently).
Smokie Darling (Annie) - hoping you enjoy your stay in Denver, be careful, people drive crazy on I-25 South (if you're going that way).

I guess we have people all over the place.

Teasing, I wouldn't risk you having an accident (Harri might get get hurt ;P).

Here's how I get to the yard: take I5 to US50/business loop 80, then take US50 towards Lake Tahoe. I stay on US50 4 or 5 miles past highway 99, exiting at Howe Rd/Power Inn Rd. Take Power Inn Rd south 3 or 4 miles to Fruitvale, Fruitvale east a couple miles to Florin-Perkins, then Florin Perkins south one block to the entry gate.
Or, if vague directions aren't your thing, try http://tinyurl.com/cjkkp - a MapQuest map of the area.
Hopitus - 16 Apr 2005 06:05 GMT Your MapQuest area of Sac boondocks now has that old familiar ditty, "Oh, Lord, stuck in Lodi a-gain!" in my head and it won't go away. I found Lodi, much to my surprise, a nice little place w/lotsa grapevines and fruit trees. I used to have some pals who lived in a new house when Rancho Cordova was first being developed. They used to take me down to OldTowne when I visited from Bay Area.

Yes, Lodi is actually a nice little place! Though it's suffering from being close to Silicon Valley and Sacremento. It's now very hard to find houses near Lodi priced under $250000. Not like it used to be!

Maybe we'll have to catch up to each other when you're in town (I'll bring a toy for Harri :-) ).

Harri is still really uncomfortable meeting strangers, but I'm intentionally placing her in those situations once in a while to help her learn to deal better with people. She has made remarkable progress, but has a ways to go yet.

Hopitus - 16 Apr 2005 00:16 GMT Well, this is Hopitus who lives in the *not-so-grand* MileHigh urban jungle, and has been in Aurora the whole darn day....and I bet by now you're almost in Kansas or wherever you're headed. I live downtown MileHigh and every few days I watch a trapped semi rock its way out of a tight spot where it thought it would turn into my narrow street here....funny how the irate cars, even the SUV's, all back off and respect its maneuvering (snicker, snicker)! There is no place for a semi to rest around here, but if you give us a little more notice, would like to meet (I could manage to get to Wheat Ridge) and go out to eat some buffalo meat (urgh) - the local favorite - or something, plus meet Miss Harri! Next time give us some warning. I have friends who live in Wheat Ridge or near it but am clueless as to truck stops.

We're getting to enjoy the scenic splendor of Wheat Ridge until tomorrow, as our first delivery isn't until 4 am in Arvada. ost truck stops aren't in the best parts of town, but this one is an especially seamy patch. Unlike the one in Aurora - that one is actually pretty nice.

I live downtown MileHigh and If your travels today should take you by Aurora again, you might want to drop by the Flying J truck stop (east 32nd Ave, just west of Airport Blvd, exit 285 from I70). We're here until around 5 PM or so. We picked up a load in Aurora (those hollow paper tubes they pour concrete into. We have a trailer full, and it's only 2200 pounds!) and stopped at the Aurora truck stop for fuel. Since we were here and we don't have to deliver in Salt Lake City until Monday I figured we may as well stop so that I can take a shower, clean up the truck a bit (it's become something of a pig sty), maybe take a nap, and definitely take a kitten walk.
This morning we had to deliver in Arvada, CO at 5:00 AM so I got up at 4:00 AM (3:00 by my watch, since we're on Pacific time) and got us ready. Harri made it clear that she expected a walk, but we didn't have time. When we got to Arvada there was another truck ahead of us so we had half an hour to spare. Of course we spent that time walking :) There was an elementary school across the street from where we were dropping (Costco), and Harri REALLY wanted to go there. But it was very dark and I knew we only had half an hour or so, so I kept Harri from crossing the street.
It is amazing how fascinating bushes can smell. This morning was like all our other kitten walks. At least once during each walk Harri will find at least one bush or tree that smells *fascinating*. She will sit in front of the selected bush or tree for at least 5 minutes, sometimes as long as 15 minutes, just sniffing. I have no idea what's so interesting, but I'm glad that the Roadcat is finding such interesting stuff.

Will stop and sniff a bush for the *longest* time. DH is convinced he really is waiting for us to come out and rescue him, LOL...
