Cat covering food dish

Doe John - 11 Apr 2005 04:23 GMT Don't know if this happens with anyone else's cat. With the wet food, my cat will usually try to cover the dish with anything on the ground such as , plastic wrap, junk mail, and empty carton, etc. Recently, she has aslo done that with the dry food. This evening, she covered both dishes with saran wrap that used to be on the ground next to the garbage can. Once, she completely covered the dish with an empty orange juice carton!!!!
She covers th dishes with a digging motion with one paw. Ididn't know housecats buried their food. My cat spent her kitenhood in the city streets, so I wonder if that was a habit of hers to protect a limited food supply. She gets fed plenty now!!!

She gets fed plenty now!!! Well, all my cats do that, and two have never been outside. I think it's an instinctual thing. Of course, that's a new theory (as of right now), since I used to think it was because of having more than one cat, so...

Hopitus - 11 Apr 2005 04:36 GMT You're a good cat father to your stray furry master. I've heard of worse and wierder food habits than hers.

When I had one cat, she did it. Now only Cheeky does, of my current two. It is so insulting when one slaves over a hot can opener to have them try to cover it like it is poo! :)

She gets fed plenty now!!! Harri Roadcat does this too, but only with good stuff that she doesn't want to eat all at one sitting. She doesn't do this with her dry food, but when I put down wet food or the times I give her a little bit of milk, she'll enjoy just a little bit of it then will try to scrape a bag or something over the rest. I usually help her out a bit by putting the dish inside a plastic grocery bag.

I have her dish on an old table mat by the kitchen and she covers the dish with one corner of it.

Then the water runs all over the floor!!

hobbs - 12 Apr 2005 01:55 GMT My its good to have a laugh now and again instead of crying over the sad stories, Wilson has never covered his food but since he is a nibbler I often cover it so it wont dry out{wet food} the first time I did it, I found he quite easily *un*covered it all by himself Jean.

She gets fed plenty now!!! Well I got duds. My two don't do this. Can I get a refund? I believe it's instinct to protect what's left of their food so others don't smell it.

Then again, I've gone from free feeding to measured ammounts twice a day, so there's rarely any leftovers to cover up.

Shirley B. - 11 Apr 2005 17:35 GMT Hi, Rexie's done that since he was about five months. The vet says it's because he has so much feral in him. She'd never seen so much in a Siamese before, but he does it all the time.
What gets me, is that altho he doesn't eat 'hoomin' food (except for peas), he'll cover anything we happen to leave. If he jumps up to the counter when I'm eating, (don't freak, it doesn't bother me) he won't do it to my plate, but if I stand up like I'm leaving, he will. If I have my soda near my puter and he jumps up, he does it around the soda (I'm watchful when he does it around liquids). It's almost as if he doesn't consider it HIS food, but knows it's some kind of food. He also does it to his water dish at times.
Also, his bowl sits on a placemat and I'll find the placemat kind of folded up over the bowl!
Crazy!

However, three of the four like to fish vittles out of the bowl with a paw and eat them off the floor. Smokey, the feral, I suspect is too used to devouring everything he saw and/or opening hte dumpster for seconds. He's the only one who doesn't fish with his food--he just stuffs it in his face.

Unfortunately, Cinders likes to drop some of her dry food into her water bowl, which means that her water is usually a bit murky by the time I get home from work. I am going to have to put her water bowl farther away from her food dish.

Every morning my girls get the water dishes washed with hot soapy water and filled with cold filtered water. There are three dishes, and they wait for the one in the kitchen to be filled and take turns drinking while I make my coffee and dish out their canned food. They definitely drink more water now that they get the cold filtered water.

If she's not terribly hungry, or the food isn't her favourite flavour, she will fish out a bit of food on a claw, then shake her paw vigorously so the piece of food flies away, and then she rushes after it. It makes the food mor einteresting when you get to hunt it down, you know. ;o)
I just need to wash all the cat food off the walls.

Mine also will attempt to cover my food or drink whenever she jumps on the table. That is a little better than what she used to do, which is attack my food and paw at it. She used to dip her paws into my food and then lick her paw to sample my meal.

Mischief - 12 Apr 2005 03:31 GMT Mischief doesn't really do it, but Imp will cover it ad naseum
I have learned to not leave clothes lying on the floor in the vicinity of the food/water dish. I have come home to a t-shirt that reeks of cat food and a pair of shorts that are soaking wet

I came home from work one day to find a t-shirt in the middle of the bedroom floor. I'm a slob but I knew that wasn't there when I left in the morning. I picked it up - oh, gross! She'd pulled it out of the laundry basket and dragged it over to cover her "mess", hoping I wouldn't notice.

not for hairballs but for when she throws up her food after scarfiing it down too fast

I thought that was a reflection on the quality (or otherwise) of the food offering! They tend to look disgusted when they do it, like they think it belongs in the litterbox :)
