My Mechanic hit me with this today, when I went to get my oil changed....

WARNING>>>> DEVOUT CATHOLICS MAY FIND THIS OFFENSIVE.... But, I hope not,
cause it's pretty funny.

Blair, my mechanic, want's to run for pope.  When I asked him why, he
replied:

'Well, first I want to be the first un-Cardinaled Pope & with my expertise
in mechanics & detailing cars, I want to create a new reality TV show....'

Pope My Ride!

Not to be historically nit-picky, but there were Popes before there
were Cardinals. ;)

Indeed, you don't have to be a Cardinal to be elected Pope.  Granted, the
last time that happened was in the 12th century... but technically all you
have to be is a priest.

My understanding, and I could well be mistaken, was that any baptised,
unmarried male Catholic could *theoretically* be Pope.

You are correct, the only *real* requirement is to be male, but it's a
given that you have to be catholic and ordainable (i.e. not married). I
don't remember where I read that they used to use a chair with a hole in
the center, in which the pope-elect would sit sans trousers. One of the
cardinals then would reach under and feel for his hmmmm... manly bits.
If they were there, he would announce the new pope. :)

Supposedly came about as a result of the "Pope Joan" scandal in the
Middle Ages. ;)

Pope Joan is a hoax - historians now think it was made up by Protestants
satirising Catholicism and the Papacy. The records show a continuous line of
male popes (sometimes two or three at the same time if it was being
contested) but no Pope John (Joan) at the alleged times she was supposed to
hold the seat.
