Cheryl - 09 Apr 2005 03:36 GMT I've been trying to catch up. It's been a strange week. I've had insomnia that is putting me on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Stress related. My mind won't stop talking. We're at the end of a year long project with people in charge who don't tend to think ahead, or plan for certain things like SUPPORT for it (a CMS project; first for us where I work) and its at the stage where many people are in CYA mode. Frustrating. My phone rings non-stop for things that aren't my concern but being the kind of person I am, I can't just say "call so and so". I want it to work and not pass the buck. My personality is "perfectionist". I've been called on it many times.
Going through the week without more than an hour of sleep each night has made life sort of surreal. I've been late to work because after hours of looking at the clock, I'm ready to drift off just when the alarm is supposed to go off and I don't want to deny that little bit of sleep. Luckily my boss is understanding, and knows what's going on even if he's unable to make it better. He kids that if I have a nervous breakdown, they'll just replace me. I know what I'm missing now. Since my "downtime" is so chaotic, the cats aren't even sleeping with me. I miss the purrs to lull me to sleep. When they're there, Rhett is laying across my legs and I can't move. Maybe I've given off the signal that they're in my way.
Last night I finally gave in and got some Sleepinol sleeping pills. I took 1 at 7pm so I could go to bed early, and hopefully sleep all night. By 8:30 I didn't feel sleepy enough, took another and it kicked in within 10 minutes and I was almost crawling to bed. Weird, though, I still woke up a couple of times during the night but luckily fell back to sleep quickly each time. Today was rough. In a sort of drug haze. I haven't had insomnia like this since Eric died.
Gosh this got long. Tomorrow is the wedding I'm going to dressed in costume. lol I'll post some pics when I get the chance.
I just wanted to say that I'm horribly behind and sending purrs and best wishes and I hope to catch up on Sunday. Purrs to you all.

Purrs to you all. Hope you have fun. When I get that kind of "racy mind" thing that creates insomnia, I sit down with copies of my favorite show (ST: any version) and watch. It lets me "shut out" all that noise. I resist the temptation to "multitask" at anything. It usually helps. If I then experience racy mind still upon going to bed, I try to visualize in great detail, the coziest most comforting image I can. Usually, the type of bedroom I would most wish I had or, even more abstract, the most comforting material that I can imagine that creates comfort. Perhaps cotton...huge fluffy, warm cotton that envelopes me as though I were taking a bath in it. Or maybe, if it is hot, silk; how smooth, satiny, cooling it is and how cool air sifts through. Maybe even the comforting sound that also lulls me. How it feels, even how it smells. I find that doing visualizations like this, in detail, make it impossible for other thoughts to intrude and generally can get me calm enough to sleep.

I don't waste time. I take a 5mg Ambien when I need to get to sleep and stay asleep. I wake up feeling pretty good. (Though I can never remember how the TV shows I was watching the night before ended.) I used to get a fairly good nights sleep off plain old Benedryl.

Purrs coming your way. I can understand. My DH is a software engineer, and he's always freaked out when a project is near completion. There's always changes to be made, last minute things someone promises the customer that they didn't bother asking the programmers if it's possible, plus he works with an idiot and he's always fixing the idiot's work. When he's in that mode, his brain doesn't stop and he never sleeps well. Heh, I'm going through a weird sleep thing now myself. Guess that's why I'm reading the ng's at 1:20 am. I feel like a vampire, I sleep better during the day. Have fun at the costume party!

Hugs, Cheryl. Insomnia is a PITA. I have had it since DS was a little guy - I got used to having no sleep, so continued. I hope the stress level for you dies down a bit and that you can get back to your old routine.
Take care, -L.

Christine Burel - 10 Apr 2005 16:59 GMT Hi Cheryl, I'm sorry you've had such a stressful time. Many purrs from us for your life to calm down (remember, on your project, your office may just have to turn in a less-than-adequate project and you have to not wreck your health for it) and for your sleep habits to improve. Thinking of you. Haven't been here much myself lately, real life has been demanding. Christine

Haven't been here much > myself lately, real life has been demanding. Thanks Christine, and everyone. There are over 1000 posts to catch up on so I probably won't but will read the latest. I actually slept in today until 1pm and may have caught up on sleep. At least it was restful sleep! Going to start over tomorrow at work and try not to let it get to me.
The wedding was beautiful, and nearly everyone was dressed in costume! I was surprised! It was a beautiful day, and a little hot for my costume because the wedding was outdoors and there wasn't any shade in the seating area. But there was a nice breeze. I'll try to get a pic up of me in costume (LOL) in the next few days. In the meantime, I put a few new ones in the kitten's folder. Rhett was playing in the sink, then Scarlett decided to, but she fell in. Didn't stop her though, she was right back up there playing. http://tinyurl.com/6xmt6
My hand is feeling a little better from the CTS from resting it. :)

Isn't this so hard to get used to after having older, more sedintary cats for so long?? Shamrock has always been one to knock things to the floor, but he's never climbed curtains since I've had him. Or the inside of horizontal blinds, either. Rhett tries to climb them like a ladder, and this boy is now about 15 pounds!

He's a lump when he sleeps across my legs, too. I don't know how he is comfortable like that but he sleeps hard.

Since it's only early April, I didn't think it would be that hot! But Saturday was a beautiful and rather warm at about 70F so yeah, it was hot. Yes, uncomfortable too. And I couldn't drive in it. lol Some of us in costume were talking about just that; wondering how women wore stuff like that back then.

You could wrap it with glue underneath and then nail it really tight. Or you could wrap it with sisal rope instead. You may have to remove the old carpet first with that though.

Yeah, I just recently re-covered our old scratching post with some second hand carpet that one of my neighbours was throwing out. Once I'd got the old carpet off the post it was pretty easy to staple the new stuff on. Getting the old carpet off was a bit awkward though, as some bits had been glued on. If I did it again I'd just staple the new carpet right over the old stuff if it won't come off easily.

I thought about rewrapping it with sisal, and might still do that. I like the idea of one of those really cool condo/tower/scoopy bed cat trees to take the place of this one in the living room since its the most used room in the house and they are always wherever I am.
These guys get the zoomies and I've seen them almost pull this one down and it must weigh at least 100 pounds, and most of the weight at the base! Now that Rhett is bigger than Shamrock (yes, Karen, he is HUGE! More evidence that his genes contain some Bengal!!) they both charge across the room and dive for the tree! It's hysterical! I think I'd like to get/buy/make something like what Catnipped has for her kitties.

I still think covering a heavy bookcase in carpet would be great. Or, a freind of my took the back part of an old upright piano and turned it into a bookcase. You could find one of those and put in shelves with holes and carpet the whole thing up!

Rhett is one of those cats who is all muscle. He has very defined hips and a very broad chest, long legs, a long neck and the length of his body is long compared to Shamrock. Oh, and a very long tail. He's just, um, long. lol
