I just posted some pics of the splintered poles and the work crew on
alt.binaries.pictures.scenic. The pictures also give you a good view
of what a prairie is like. Dry grass and Yucca plants.

Unreal!! It's amazing more damage than that wasn't done!

I think previous storms must have already blwon all the loose dead
branches out of trees. Mostly I saw small storage sheds tumbled
around, aide from the poles.

Those poles truly did snap like matchsticks!  Scary as can be.  I remember
all the downed trees (you don't have a lot of those, thank goodness!) and
power lines from our last monster storm.  When they finally told us to just
go home from the office, I drove my normal route.  One of those big
transformer things had come off when the pole snapped and landed on top of a
very nice pickup truck.  Yikes!

What a close call! I had similar visions of some of these poles with
live wires coming down on moving cars. Didn't see anything like that,
though.

Can't blame you for those visions but maybe you don't have enough moving or
otherwise cars out there. Now
OTOH around here I bet the power co. doesn't let their
power poles get that old....can you imagine if they did?
What to do in Denver when it's dark......and/or Traffic
Chaos and Fried Citizens......LOL.

The area I was driving home through had very upscale homes and lots of tall
trees.  It was actually the wind blowing over the trees that caused the
poles to topple because they fell on the wires and well... it was a huge
mess.  Kind of a domino effect.  Luckily no one was hurt.
