Pet Rio Defensor - 03 Apr 2005 03:05 GMT
We are facing a terrible experience in Rio de Janeiro. Pet defenders
from all over the city are on the eminence of loosing their colonies.
Cats and dogs will be swept from streets by our government. The
argument is that they will bring treating illnesses to population. No
recent statistics on sporotrichosis or toxoplasmosis human contagion
has suggested this treat.

The most pathetic is that the responsible for this action is the
Animal Protection Chamber. The nurturing program will continue but as
a facade to the cleaning process in preparation for the pan-american
athletic games in Rio. They were already cleaning streets in a hidden
processes. But now it is a declared open eradication.

Please, help us. Any testimony of good relations between humans and
street animals populations would be of good help. We know that
colonies eradication would not prevent other animals to be abandoned.
And it is very sad to see those animals we care so much being taken
from us to death.

Thank you in advance.

Luiz, could you perhaps find a way to launch a campaign of private citizens
and/or NGOs to quickly live-trap the ferals and put them into foster care or
at least some temporary shelter facility?

Pat, have you actually *SEEN* the *REAL* Rio de Janeiro?  I'm not talking
about the part that they *want* you to see, the clean touristy part, but the
massive shanty-towns & slums that are just *outside* of that nice clean
tourist attraction?

I doubt if anyone there can offord to feed a pet, let alone get it spayed or
neutered (as is the norm in US/UK), hence the pet overpopulation to begin
with.

I've seen much worse places.

My observation has been that poorer people usually have more empathy for
animals and are more willing to help them than the wealthier ones who are
hoarding what they have. I do think a grass-roots informational campaign
would have a great impact if Luiz could manage to organize one, and maybe
these people can be inspired to reach out to the animals who are worse off
than even they are.
