How are the new cats settling in?

I used to have a handle on life...but it broke off.

They're settling in quite well, considering...
They arrived on Thursday evening. They had a wander around the lounge
room as soon as their "mum" let them out of their carriers. Orlando
(Orlie), the older one, soon settled down on the sofa. Tyler, the
younger one, got very upset - he went and hid behind the sofa, and
started hissing and being agressive towards anyone who came close, even
Orlie and his mum. That was pretty difficult for his mum to take, but in
my experience it's pretty normal behaviour for the first day in a new
place - I'd be pretty angry and frightened too if I were suddenly left
somewhere new. In the past I've found the best thing to do is leave them
alone until they're feeling secure enough to come out of their own accord.

Orlie sat on the sofa watching TV with me all evening (just after his
mum left there was a science show featuring lab mice, which he really
seemed to enjoy). He ate some food later on - not the whole dish, but
enough. I left them both to sleep in the lounge room - when I checked on
them during the night Orlie was curled up on the sofa and Tyler was
still hiding down behind it. Tyler didn't eat any food while I was
there, but when I went to bed I put a little bowl of kibble down by the
back of the sofa where he was hiding, and it was all gone by the morning.

Next morning, Orlie was still looking relaxed but Tyler was still
hissing whenever I went near him, so I left them some food and shut them
in the lounge room away from my other cats while I went to work. There's
quite a gap at the bottom of the lounge room door, so the newcomers and
the old hands can touch paws and indulge in a bit of name-calling, but
not much else.

When I got home that night, Tyler had come out of hiding and was still
hissing and spitting at me, but he was also interested in some dinner.
He sat up on the back of the sofa instead of hiding behind it. Later on,
I went over to sit on the same sofa as Tyler. As long as I didn't try to
touch him, he didnt hiss, so I just sat there and let him get used to
me. Orlie jumped on my lap.

This morning Tyler didn't hiss at me at all, and he even let me scritch
him on the head.

Today the new fellows progressed outside the lounge room - I shut a
different door so that my other cats were in the back half of the house
while the new fellows could wander around the front part. Tomorrow we'll
swap that arrangement around.

So far, my other cats haven't shown much interest in the new ones at
all. It's been quite cold at night for the last few days, and they all
continued to sleep cuddled up to me as usual. Touch wood, things are
going pretty well so far.

I'll post some pictures ASAP, but my camera is a film one so they'll be
a few more days.

Yay, sounds like things are going about as smoothly as can be expected
:-)  Looking forward to the pics!
