She BIT me!

My loving, sweet Persia was annoyed (apparently) night before last.  I
stretched out a hand towards her and she sunk her fangs into the top of my
hand.  This wasn't a quick stab, no; she was dug in like a tick.  I had to
disengage her.  I got up and rinsed my hand with hydrogen peroxide and put
an antibotic ointment and a bandage on.  (Yes, I've had my shots and so has
she.)  Went back to bed.  Not long afterwards I flung my arm out, too close
to her again (apparently) and she bit me again!!  Darnit, Persia, what's
wrong with you?  More peroxide, ointment and another bandage later, she
tried it again.  At no time was I ever touching her!  If she's not careful,
I'll take away her weekly gooshy food.

I'm starting to worry about you little darling too.  I know you aren't in a
position to be running off to the vet just because you don't care for her
attitude.

Is it possible that she is picking up on your anxiety and its making her
anxious too?  Some pets, most often cats, can be over empathetic.  Sit down
and talk to her about it.

Sending calming down and feeling better purrs for everyone.

Maybe she's picking up on that.  I don't know.  I may have to take her if
she keeps this up.  It's not typical behavior for her.  She's eating,
drinking and urinating and defecating normally.  She doesn't act like
anything is wrong, but she's cranky as can be and I don't know why.  It's a
bit disturbing.

Could be, although she shouldn't really notice a difference.  It's just a
tiny bit less in the scoop.  And I gave her fountain a good cleaning today
so she has nice fresh cold water.  The weather is nice; the windows are
open.  She's watching birdies and squirrels at the moment.  At night she'll
fall asleep next to me (as usual), then she moves over to the other side of
the bed away from me.  She's never done this. (sigh) I don't have a clue.

If the window are open she may be scenting another cat outside - probably on
in heat.  That usually gets my crews very agitated (I came home to find my
drapes pulled down for the second time this week.

I wonder how old she is. When my cats reached maturity (say 4 y.o.) they
started changing their patterns whenever spring came. Grant would sit in the
window catnapper all night, through summer. Pearl sleeps near but not
against me as in winter. Sugar is on again off again and often restless at
bedtime. But it does seem odd that Persia would bite so *hard*.
Jo Firey - 01 Apr 2005 02:41 GMT
Have you checked Persia's teeth?  Is that something you can do on your own?
If it was her ears I think you would see it in her behavior, but teeth
sometimes you really can't see unless you have good light and can pry her
mouth open.

No way would she let me do that!  If she keeps this up I WILL take her to
the vet.  I'm hoping it's just a bit of spring fever or something (wishful
thinking, I'm sure).

Sorry.  But then I've had very few pets who would let me check their teeth.
Especially on my own.  Poor Persia.  I'm sure she is as upset by how she's
behaving as you are.

More Purrs on the way.  As soon as Jake and Molly finish hunting and come in
for a rest.  Their world right now is overflowing with things that buzz and
twitch and hop and wiggle and chirp,

I know your funds are limited right now (to say the least!), but I think it
would be worthwhile to invest in a couple of Feliway plug-in dispensers.
Feliway can be very helpful in reducing stress.  Of course, a visit to the
vet really will be imperative if this behvior continues.

Melisande has started biting me for no reason recently, too!
She starts by licking, then a little "love nip".  Only
instead of letting go, she keeps biting down harder and
harder, until I grab the nape of her neck and pull her away.
Consequently, my hands and lower arms are displaying tiny
scabs where she drew blood before I could disengage her!

LOL!  (A fellow "Pelleas" fan?)  But it usually happens when
she has CHOSEN to be touched and is on my lap,
enthusiastically expressing affection.  Then I start to pet
her, and wham!

No, but when I first met her (then a kitten) she had an
"otherworldly" look about her, and seemed to accept everyone
around her without question (while revealing nothing about
herself).

THERE's your answer! She's tired of crunchy kibbles and wants more of the
soft, fibrous, juice-filled stuff ... like your arm.

Well tell HER to get a job, then!  LOL  When is she going to do more than
just be a cute (now biting) cuddle-bug? ;)

I've tried to get my punks to go job hunting.... At least set up an
interview or tow.... Sigh.... So far the Mothership has put a  veto on this
idea.  I guess there's not many full time jobs for greebling hunters out
there...?

If I had a cat like Persia who had always been loving start to bite me, and
not just a warning, but a hard one that she dug in, I would suspect
something is hurting her a lot.
If Kitty FC did this to me, I would not be particularly surprised as she is
moody and difficult.
If Boyfriend did it, I'd know there was something seriously wrong with him
and he would be off to TED post haste.
You know your own cat.  If her behaviour is out of character it needs
analysing.  She might be hurting.
Can you get help from a cat charity for vet fees over there?

I don't know of any such charities.  At any rate, her vet will allow me to
run a tab (so to speak).  They know I'm hell bent on keeping her healthy and
happy.  That $900 surgery for bladder stones last year is a case in point.
John paid $700 of it.  But of course with the addition of special food and a
biopsy to determine if the removed cyst was cancerous (which they think
caused the stones, along with diet), etc. I had to pay them the remainder in
installments.

She's actually behaving fine today; keeps getting the zoomies and playing
with her toys.  I can't determine whether she was hurting or just being
moody.  I understand it's a woman's perogative to be moody on occasion!
I'll keep an eye on her, of course.  Coincidentally I just got notice in the
post today she's due for another round of shots.  This vet is sadly
mistaken, however - the post card says Persia's "Master" should call them
for an appointment.  We all know who is the "Master" in this house :)  But
no way is the true Master going to deliberately schedule an appointment for
shots!!

My vet routinely sends reminders for "yearly" shots when every three
years is recommended by most experts.  If Persia bites you like that any
more I would suggest a "dental".  Have the fangs removed before you get
a serious infection.

While the other teeth are not as big a deal, having fangs removed can have
serious consequences on a pets health.  The roots are particularly deep, and
sometimes the hole refuses to close up.  It can lead to a permanent hole
into the sinuses where the tooth should be, frequent infection, and the
general bad breath that goes along with it.

I can't count the number of times I've been scratched and/or
bitten by my cats, with a few permanent scars, but never an
infection!  (I would NEVER advocate having a cat's teeth
pulled because she bit me - do you recommend declawing if
the owner gets "cat scratch" fever, too?)

Nox bites a lot to show dominance.  If we go limp and submit, she
releases us; if we struggle she clamps down harder.  She will often
bite in the middle of a petting and, once she releases us, likes us to
continue--she just has to settle who's in charge.

But it sounds like Persia did the blooddrawing kind.  Check and see if
something is upsetting her--sometimes cats take out aggression on
other sources.  LIke if a strange animal outside is pissing her off,
she might attack you if she can't attack the source of her grouchy.
Otherwise, a trip to TED might be in order.

She has since resumed being her normal, loving self.  I don't know what
caused the mood but I think it's passed now.

I tried that when Melisande first began the practice - she
just continues clamping down harder until forcibly removed!

> She will often

That's Melly's modus operandi, too, but once she takes the
first bite, any further activity on my part is looked upon
as an invitation to a boxing match (her claws are sharp,
too) with mouth partially open, fangs at the ready to chomp
down again if a hand gets close enough!  (However, if I
remove my hands from her line of sight, she'll settle down
again on my lap and go to sleep.)

> But it sounds like Persia did the blooddrawing kind.  Check and see if

Hmmmm....  Melly becomes more and more insistent about going
"out" (which she cannot do - I live in the kind of apartment
building with hallways, not a balcony, outside the front
doors).  I wonder if she'd let me put a harness on her
without bting me to the bone?   Maybe I should see how she'd
respond to "walkies".
CatNipped - 03 Apr 2005 02:26 GMT
Believe me, I know about what I speak - Bandit has bitten me so often for so
long now, it's how I got my screen name...

The best thing to do when a cat bites down on your hand is to push your hand
towards him/her instead of pulling it away.  This goes totally against your
instinct - to pull away from the source of pain - so you have to consciously
remember to do it.

For one thing, a cat's teeth curve inwards (as do the "spikes" on their
tongues), nature designed them to capture and retain prey, so pulling away
only digs the teeth deeper into your flesh.  Pushing towards him/her will
cause a gag reflex and make him/her open his/her mouth wide enough for you
to pull your hand free.

Since I've been bitten by her so often, it doesn't cause that adrenaline
flight/fight reflex in me.  That was why, when Bandit bit me at the vet's
office last week I was able to just stand there and let her bite away for a
while so she didn't get loose and go after the vet or tech.  As bad as I was
bitten and clawed, that would have been *nothing* compared to what she would
have done to one of them.  So I basically, "took one for the Gipper"!  ;>

BTW, the bite is still sore, the knuckle is still stiff, but it is well on
its way to healing.  The site of the tetanus shot, however, is *still* red,
hot, swollen and itchy!  <sigh>

Hugs,

CatNipped
