The package finally srrived, bearing much more gifts than I had
expected! Mere attacked one of the toys before I even put the catnip
pouch inside it. Then Frank and Nikki played with one each, then Mere
snatched one of them again and developed a new game involving the box
and a toy, where sometimes the toy hid in the box and Mere attacked it,
sometimes Mere hid inside the box and pounced on the toy outside. The
box travelled around the floor. Nikki lay, a bit zonked out, with the
other toy close by and watched.

Nikki hisses and growls at Mere, but at the same time, she is fascinated
with her. She often sits close by, just staring at Mere while Mere
plays. If Mere comes too close by mistake, she hisses, but it almost
seems like a formality - she started out with the hissing so she has to
continue doing it.

The strange thing is, she's not coughing any more. I know this can't be
supported medically, but it's as if all that hissing had cleared her
airways and improved her asthma. I couldn't get her meds into her last
night, so she didn't get her daily Prednisone dose, yet she hasn't
coughed once that I've heard sicne then. I'm taking a risk and testing
this by not giving her the Prednisone tonight and see if she starts
wheezing. But thank you for the mask anyway, Julie. I'm afraid it will
come to good use. Nikki sniffed it eagerly, but I think that's because
it was in the same box as the catnip pouches.

Beautiful card, too. Thanks again.

Well, I don't know about that. There are breathing exercises that do
strengthen the lungs and surrounding muscles. It may be that she is getting
some benefit from it!!

I'm glad that the package arrived. I wasn't sure if the catnip would get
confiscated or not. I didn't know about Mere when I bought two toys but
hopefully it will work out, afterall, Nikki has her pink piggy.

It sounds like things are going really well with the integration of Mere
into your household.  We still have growling and hissing around here
occasionally but generally its because Barnabus is playing to rough with
Lacey.  Sam and Hobbes have a hard time getting along as well and we
have all out ex-tom cat fights.  Fortunately no blood has been
drawn...yet.  We keep a water bottle nearby at all times.

I agree with everyone else and am pleased to read that you're giving
Nikki her prednisone again and gradually decreasing the dose.  It would
be nice if she would take Albuterol (are you asthmatic? Maybe you have
some at home) with the mask just in case she has an attack.  Good luck
with her.

No, asthma is one of the few diseases I don't have. ;o) I'm glad
everyone reminded me that you can't just stop Prednisone cold, but have
to decrease it gradually. I'm so used to tweaking my own medicines daily
that I tend to do so with the cats, too, without consulting a vet, which
of course I should. I also have a constant uneasy feeling about giving
Nikki Prednisone every day because of its possible side efects, so would
like to jump at any excuse to take her off it. But I'm trying to taper
it down now. So far, I haven't heard a wheeze or cough from her.
