CatNipped - 27 Mar 2005 21:55 GMT I've told you guys about my gastric bypass surgery (March 12, 2004), my new diet and how much I'm exercising. I've also told you that I'd lost my job right after buying my house and could only find another making half my pay.
So....
I've been *VERY* rapidly losing weight but couldn't *AFFORD* to keep buying new clothes every 4 to 6 weeks. Fortunately, there's a thrift store right at the corner of my house where I can pick up clothes for a dollar or two each piece. Being used, however, the size tag is always washed out or ripped so I really don't know what size I'm getting, I just try them on and if they fit I get them.
Now, at 135 (having lost 107 pounds), I've pretty much lost all I'm going to, although my shape may change a bit more as I exercise. So, I went to Wal-Mart with DH last night and decided to splurge on a pair of *NEW* pants. [Yikes, $20.00 for *ONE* pair of pants after a year of only spending a buck or two!!! ;>]
DH was rushing me because he wanted to get home in time to watch a movie on TV that he'd been waiting all week to see. So, I found a pair of pants I liked, but I didn't have time to try them on. I guesstimated at a size 6 after holding them up next to me (I really thought a size 8 but DH said no, he didn't think so), and I bought those.
I got home and *then* tried them on............
The were too big!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*OHMYGAWD, THEY WERE TOO BIG*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to take them back and get a size 4.
*A SIZE FOUR*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly 1 year ago today I was wearing a size *24*!!!!!
EEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!! <thud>

KellyH - 27 Mar 2005 21:57 GMT Congrats Catnipped!! That's amazing! I'll have to Google your posts about the gastric bypass surgery. I think it's something my DH should do. He won't even consider it, though.

My DH too would benefit from the surgery, but he won't either even after seeing up close and personal how much healthier I've become. It's done laproscopically now and there's much less recovery time than when a friend of mine had it 25 years ago.
If you need information on how to get the insurance company to pay for it I can provide that too. It took me 6 months of appeals before my insurance company would pay, which is ridiculous considering the cost benefits to *THEM*! Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and joint replacement - just a few of the things I was headed for - is *MUCH* more expensive to treat than the cost of this surgery!!!

I've also told you that I'd lost my job [quoted text clipped - 41 lines] > CatNipped > http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/CatNipped/ Wow. Congratulations! You look really petite in your pictures. I am on a rampage. The fact that I seem to have "rot gut" this week is helping. I'm bound and determined to get in shape and lose 20 or so lbs. I found a very inspirational book. Have any of you seen it at the Book store? It's called Fearless Women and it is kind of a photo essay coffee table book with a little blurb on each woman's story. They are all from age about 41 to 60 plus. It's just a marvelous book and most of them have incredible stories, including one woman who was side swiped by a truck and had to completely relearn how to move. Her quote is "After 30 operations, do you think I worry about a few wrinkles?". There is another woman, a dancer, who at the height of her youth and career contracted a mysterious virus that left her *completely* paralyzed. She had to relearn everything, even expressions. Joni Mitchell is in it and well... all I can say is it is very motivating. If you get a chance, look through it at the store.
Again, congrats Lori!

No, I haven't seen that one, I'll have to look for it.
As I've stated before, the health benefits of doing this have *FAR* outweighed the vanity aspect - it has extended my life expectancy a *LOT* (I now have a good chance of seeing my grandkids married and with children of their own).
But I have to admit that it *DOES* feels really good to go shopping in the *MISSES* section (after 25 years of only looking in the women's section)!

I don't know if they still do this, but Goldsmith's/Macy's used to have a huge sale every 3rd Thursday of the month... I can't remember what they called it. Women would take off work to go there. They had this sale before they shipped their "remains" off to a bargain basement somewhere downtown. You could buy $225 suits for $25. $80 slacks for $10. I only went once... Gosh, the name of the sale is on the tip of my tongue... Clover Day! They called it Clover Day! Ask if you have one of these stores down there.

The really good ones are always at the end of season. I'm serious. I've brought in 5 outfits for $50 a lot of times. I got a great 150.00 swing coat with zip out wool lining for $49.00 the other day. But shirts, tops, pants, skirts and dresses can be cheap, cheap, cheap and I've always found that Dillard's has the best sales.

badwilson - 28 Mar 2005 04:01 GMT That's great Lori! Congratulations! What a success story and you certainly deserve to feel great about it :-) I know how great if feels to get into the really small sizes. A couple of years ago I lost 35 lbs and went from a 12-14 to what I think might be a 4 or 6. I also don't know exactly what size I am because here in Thailand the sizes are all screwed up. I'm 5'6" and weigh about 130 lbs. I wear an XL in Thai sizes but it's more like a S in the US. Sometimes I can get imported clothes here and I always try to figure out my size, but it seems to vary so much from brand to brand. They make Columbia clothes near here and you can get stuff really cheap but I've noticed they fit small so I need an 8, but in Old Navy (another brand they make here and you can get ultra cheap) I can fit into a 2 or 4. Weird, but I must admit that it makes me feel better when the label has a smaller size on it! ;-) -- Britta "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." -- Unknown Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album

Yeah, they are much smaller. I'd say the average Thai woman is about 5' nothing and men about 5'5" maybe. I am taller than most men. I find the men are usually very skinny. The women are skinny if they're young. Size 25 jeans and all that. But it seems that as soon as they get married and have a few kids, they really balloon out. Then they wear nothing but baggy ugly polyester tops or huge baggy t-shirts! I don't know if ring size changes with bodyfat, but my ring size is about a 7.5.

As for your ring size, You have some German blood, and Germans tend to be big boned. They have bigger heads than many nationalities, too. I have an Asian friend who was all upset because her baby is the smallest in her Mommy group. I asked her what where the last names of the Mommies. They were mostly Anglo-German. My mother was of German extraction. While I am of medium height (5'7") , my ring size at my thinnest is a 6--when I have put on a few (at say, around 135 lbs) it is a 7.5. I think you are taller than I.

Wow, I must be a real German outlier then! When I was born, I was a tad over 7 lbs, so not big. I wouldn't say I'm big boned either. My ring size is a 5 and I have trouble with watch bands too. I usually have to punch a new hole to make it small enough. My mom's German, my dad's Austrian. I think my bones are dense because of the reasons I listed. I also have a ring size. Come to think of it, though, I'm not sure how I connected all of that together. It's been a rough day.
Maybe I have big dense bones =) My wrists are pretty slender, though. I've always thought I had short, fat fingers, rather than the long, elegant, tapered fingers I might imagine I'd want.

I'm also slightly shorter and a good deal heavier than you.

> Maybe I have big dense bones =) My wrists are pretty slender, though. > I've always thought I had short, fat fingers, rather than the long, > elegant, tapered fingers I might imagine I'd want. Proportion is a different thing altogether. I would like to have a longer neck. I think women with long necks look graceful no matter what they are doing. I would also like to have more angular facial features, high cheekbones and so forth. My face is oval, boring, boring. I admire widow's peaks for the same reason. They add interest and drama. :)

I thought I saw photos of you with your cats, though. To me you looked tall and slender. If I had a tiny head, I think I would wear a big hat. 8) Just kidding. I bet your head is exactly the right size for your body.

Enfilade - 30 Mar 2005 00:21 GMT > *OHMYGAWD, THEY WERE TOO > BIG*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > EEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!! <thud> Wow CatNipped, congratulations! You look great (but don't lose too much more...mustn't go to the other extreme) and your lifestyle sounds much healthier. With DP being a doctor, he is also very proud of you as a model reformed patient!
As for me, I had ulcers 2 years ago and my usual 150 lbs, steady for 10 years, suddenly plummetted to 128. I looked skeletal, and ill. I recovered, but I was no longer able to eat everything in sight because the experience changed my metabolism. After a lifetime of scarfing all the food I could get ahold of just to maintain weight, I find myself gaining.
I suddenly find myself at 165lbs and a size 13. I want to get back to a size 11 and wear my favourite jeans again...I could not imagine being a size 4. (I don't think I could be. My frame is simply too large.)
Send some of your luck my way ;)

CatNipped - 30 Mar 2005 01:52 GMT > > *OHMYGAWD, THEY WERE TOO > > BIG*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > > --Fil My bones are really tiny. For my height, 5' 4 1/2", with a small frame, according to the WHO I should weight between 110 and 127 pounds. So 135 is still just a bit overweight for me.
But, as I said to someone else here, as long as you're healthy, that's the only thing that really matters. My health was really bad which is why I got my insurance to pay for the surgery. When it comes down to what's important in life, it's what's in your heart that matters, not what's on your hips!
Hugs,
