Mischief - 27 Mar 2005 21:24 GMT MEOWMIE WON'T LET ME OUT!!!! I WANNA GO OUTTTTTTT!!!!!
*SIGH*
I had the window open and the screen closed and Mischief is going BONKERS!!!
She wants to go OOOUUUTTTTT!!!!
She made a mad dash when I had the door open, and I let her walk around for about 2 minutes before I scooped her back up. I tried putting together a makeshift harness out of slip leashes but she refuses to wear them
She's loudly protesting being shut in. She's walking around just wailing. I had to shut the window she was making so much racket.
I feel guilty, and I want to let her out, but...
I don't know if she'll come back! two years ago I adopted her because she showed up drinking out of the swimming pool in my apartment complex.
I posted a sign and put an ad in the paper but no one answered, and I didn't want to take her to the shelter so I kept her. The landlord and owner and I made special arrangements since there's a No Pet policy. As far as I know, I'm the only one in the building that has a cat.
But what if she really did have a family and I've been keeping her away for the last two years? What if she goes out and doesn't come back at all? What will my landlord or neightbors say if they saw Mischief walking around the apartment complex? She has a collar, but no ID and a microchip. There are birds in a cage next door out on the patio, I can't let her walk out there where she could terrorize them! And she's only vaccinated for being an indoor cat!
But she's going nuts, and it just tears my heart out that she's unhappy.
When she first showed up she did this, and she showed all the signs of being owned by a family at one time. But eventually she stopped trying to go out and seemed to loved being cared for by me and my roommate. I felt guilty by keeping her, but what if she did have a family and I didn't try hard enough to find them? I made only one sign but I put an ad in the paper, and no one answered. And I wasn't about to leave her at a shelter so I just kept her. And she stopped trying to get out and accepted me as her slave.
I almost want to let her out for a little bit. But if she goes out and doesn't come back, I know I'll be a nervous wreck! Imp likes to sniff the outdoors, but he doesn't try to get out. But I hope he doesn't get any ideas
Help, I need some advice.

Outdoors, at least in the US, are dog packs, coyotes, owls, speeding cars, psychopaths who like to torture small animals (seemingly cats in particular), diseases, and all sorts of other nasties. Yes, Mischief may be temporarily out of sorts because she can't go out, but that's better than being dead! Just find her a new toy to divert her attention.

It seems like cats that don't like harnesses do pretty good with it (from reports, I haven't tried it. Mine seem fine with a screen door to look out.

I got really hard-hearted with Mandy, and simply stopped letting her out except on a leash, in the back only and under my direct supervision. She still made a few escapes past the legs of unwary visitors.
But the situation was a bit different. I know she doesn't have another home (and I'd say, after years with you, Mischief doesn't either). And shortly after we moved here, while I was letting her out in the back on her own, she got around to the busy road in front and was very nearly killed by a car. So I made an executive decision that I'd do everything in my power to keep her in, and eventually she mostly adjusted. She does get a bit antsy in the spring, when it's warm enough to open the windows so she gets all the nice new smells, and too cold wet and muddy for me to sit out the in the back yard with her on a harness and leash.

I know you're a student, but save up a little money and buy her a Kitty Walk. http://www.finickyfelines.com/enclosures.html
Persia only goes out in that enclosure and it seems to satisfy her "I wanna go out!" needs.
And no, don't worry, you didn't steal your cat. No one responded to the posters and inquiries - she's your cat.

Mischief - 27 Mar 2005 22:33 GMT hehehe, I had a hard time reading your message because 'someone' is on top pf my computer purring up a storm.
She's flicking her tail and it's hitting the screen where you wrote, "She's your cat"
I have a small patio, but thanks for the link. That's definitely something to save up for. How sturdy is it? Does Persia try to get out of it?

[quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Kristi It's very sturdy. 6 feet long and fits most patios, even small ones. You can even get it with a cat-flap attachment if you have that sort of arrangement (I don't). Persia is a big cat and no way could she break out of it. The mesh is flexible but doesn't break. I've had it for, oh, goodness, 3 years now? I was afraid at first it would make her want to roam, but that is not the case. It satisfies her urge to go outside and I just keep the blind open if I'm not out there with her so I can keep an eye on her. After a year I bought the 'cabana' attachment so she would have some shade if she wants it. She loves it! When she wants outside she meows at the back door and I pick her up, take her out, dump her in the kitty walk and fasten up the front. When she wants back inside, she lets me know! Then I just unfasten the ties (holding the door shut) and scoop her up and take her in.

I will have to measure my deck. Gosh, that would be actually workable if it fit.

The entire thing is portable, actually :) the 6 foot one comes with a carrying case :) You might even check into the one that goes UP rather than lengthwise! It's still OUTSIDE.

I've seen that other one, but it has hammocks all the way up. With the playpen, I could even stick a little cat tree in there like this one:

Enfilade - 28 Mar 2005 04:14 GMT > MEOWMIE WON'T LET ME OUT!!!! I WANNA GO OUTTTTTTT!!!!! Dear Mischief:
You gots spring fever. You think you wants ta go out cuz of birdys an' fresh air an' sexy tomcats. But you don't.
Nature sux. Trust me. Outside you get lost and can't find food. Or you can find it but there's not much an' it's moldy an' in a trash pail. Plus there are dogs n' coyotes. Sometimes sicko humans put out poison or shoot atcha. An' there's lots of cars and stuf, and I dunno but they look like they hurt if they run over you cause they're kinda big.
It is totally better bein' inside kitty. Maybe your meowmie will get you a window perch, or a leash or an outdoor playpen. Me, I don't like that stuff. I been feral for too long. I'm not gonna take the chance that the OUTSIDE could GET me.
Luv, Smokey
P.S. if you want sexy tomcats come to my crib baby
Mischief - 28 Mar 2005 04:39 GMT Did you just call me 'Baby'???
Hmph, you toms are all the same, you're either totally spineless like Imp or out of control.
I am the QUEEN!!
I have every right to want to go outside. I've been outside before I found my slaves, but I haven't been outside since, and I miss it. I just want to explore and smell the smells. I have no need for 'sexy toms' at all.
Besides, what makes you such a special tomcat, anyway?
Mischief
Mischief - 28 Mar 2005 23:01 GMT The little sneak ran through the open door as I was coming back from getting the mail. Fortunately I was able to follow her a few feet, and while she stopped to sniff a plant, scoop her up and carry her back, with her squeaking all the way.
*sigh*

Happily, she is not very slow as she is full-figured, so I have always been able to scoop her up too. I take her out in the fenced back yard when I can be out there with her.
Mischief - 29 Mar 2005 00:10 GMT Damn it, she did it again!! This time I was looking outside because it sounded like it was raining.
You think a cat would not want to go out when it is raining.
She runs outside, then slinks along the wall to my neighbors. My neighbors have three parakeets which they put outside in their cage everyday to let them get some air. Mischief walked right up to it and put her paws up.
Naturally the birds freaked and I scooped her up. She's squeaking and protesting. So I stand there out in the rain for a few seconds with her in my arms.
"It's raining, and you want to be outside?" She squeaked again and I brought her inside.
As soon as i put her down she starts rubbing against my leg.
Now she's by the door meowing. "For god's sake, it's RAINING YOU STUPID CAT!!!!"
I just want to open the door or window to get some air in the apartment, since I'm trying to save money on the power bill, but I can't because she'll vocalize and I'll turn around to find her climbing up the screen door!
grrr.............

Jane - 29 Mar 2005 14:10 GMT >Help, I need some advice. It's entirely possible that she was a 'tossed' cat, and you found her before the ravages of feral living got to her.
Don't let her out. In is always better. You can always try to lease- train her, although I've heard that's better done when young.
Just love her up real good.
