Nikki just snuck into the bathroom and scarfed down some of Mere's
kitten food before I realised what she was doing. 'Fluffy' Nikki
certainly doesn't need any extra nutritious kitten food to add to her
fluffiness. Hmph.

Mere didn't eat her food. I've given her some Nutri-cal last evening and
today, because she wouldn't eat proper food, and this yoghurt-like stuff
(I think it only exists in Scandinavia; a soured dairy product with a
silkier texture and smoother taste than yoghurt. Fil for those of you
who understand Swedish). It comes in many forms, and I've given the
fattiest kind with the lowest lactose content. Not quite sure what to do
about the eating situation.

Oh, and I saw her using the litter box this morning! Yay! Smart little girl!

It sounds as though she's well on the way to adapting.

I have a suggestion about the feeding.  My daughter and son-in-law had two
cats.  One was very overweight, and needed to be on a diet.  She would scarf
down any food that was available at any time.  The other was very skinny,
and didn't eat a lot at one time.  He preferred to graze - eat a little at a
time, several times a day.  The took a cardboard box, turned it upside down,
and cut a hole in one end just big enough for the skinny cat to get through.
They put his food inside the box, at the end farthest from the hole.  That
way, he was the only one who could get at it.  That shoudl work for a kitten
and a "fluffy" cat.  The hole could be enlarged slightly as Mere grows.

That's a good idea. Now if I could only make Mere eat. She ate a little
cooked seith for dinner, and I gave her some Nutri-cal to augment it.
She also ate some of my pasta (like a half penne rigate) with tomato,
basil, parmesan and mozzarella on it (yes, Deb, it's your recipe). My
niece warned me that she orefers any kind of people food to kitten food. :o/

Hmmm. Well, I think that if she will eat those things, she is just being
picky. Can you put some yummy juice on her food? Maybe that will kick start
her. Sounds like she is into lickable things.

Fez and Rufous *hated* kitten food. They grew up on the regular food the
other cats ate and they did just fine. :)
In fact, the super-premium foods I give them (Innova, Felidae, Flint
River Ranch) do not have a kitten formula, they indicate their regular
formula is good for cats and kittens.

I wouldn't mind giving her big-cat food, but she has shown no interest
in Frank's kidney diet food (Waltham pouch) or Nikki's senior food
(Nutro pouch).

Maybe you need to do like some people do with babies - pretend you are
eating it!  Perhaps dip your finger towards the food then put your
finger in your mouth making "mm-mm yummy" sounds.  Then you could put
some food on your finger and offer it to her.

You probably shoudn't feed her special-diet food. Maybe she'll eat
kibble? What did your sister feed her?

aw, she's probably just a wee bit nervous still, Marina. Give her a few more
days, as long as she's taking something in of anything she'll be ok. LOL,
about Nikki, the sneaky little gal!
And kudos to the baby for learning how to use the litter box right away,
good for her.

Could you feed her some from your finger?

Yay on the litterbox!

I like the hole in the cardboard box idea for the food!

Well, it's been more than a week, and Rita and Topaz simply will NOT
get along.  There's less chasing, but only because I'm trained to
*carry* Topaz from the bedroom to the living room couch, and back,
during certain times. She's not allowed to wander the floor at
will, not if Rita is loose. Rita (my cat) will attack and chase
Topaz (my sister's cat), and at 17, I don't want Topaz to go through
that kind of stress. My sister will be so mad at me if I manage to
kill her cat!

At least she's eating okay, and using the litter box.
Here's our schedule:  At night, I lock Rita up in the bedroom with me,
and Topaz gets the run of the rest of the apartment. This is when she
uses the box and eats, I imagine.  In the morning, they swap - Topaz
gets locked in the bedroom with food, water, box, and a nice sunny
window. Being 17, she mostly sleeps anyway.  She likes to hide in
the closet, but if I left the door open, Rita would seek her out and
chase her, snarling and sniping the whole way (saw it *twice* on
saturday, before 7am!)  In the evenings when I'm home, I carry
Topaz out to the couch, and as long as I'm in the living room with
them, and as long as Topaz doesn't get off the couch, they just
look and hiss, but no chasing.

I've got 3 more weeks of this.  Should I just endure, or is there
some way to make them get along better?

When we got Smokey, we had to do that for over a month to get Nocturne
to agree to tolerate his existence.  Around two months she grudgingly
agreed that he lived there.  I don't think you can rush it.  They just
have to learn to accept one another on their own time.

Good girl! We had a few accidents here, but not many. Good luck
with the food Marina!
