Bandit's Better - But I'm Wounded

CatNipped - 25 Mar 2005 01:47 GMT Bandit got her stitches out, she's getting better *very* quickly.
She is certainly feeling like her old feisty self, and I have the wounds to prove it! I was holding her when the last stitch was taken out and she jerked around, bit me down to the bone *IN* the first joint of my middle finger of my right hand, and hooked a claw into my left arm. I stood there and let her grind away because if I had let her go either the vet or the vet tech would have been in the line of fire.
Here are pictures of both our wounds!!

Christina Websell - 25 Mar 2005 01:54 GMT Purrs for your wounds. Bandit is a very naughty girl, but at least you know that she's feeling like herself. Glad she's not mine It's bad enough having Kitty Farmcat :-P

I'm glad that Bandit is feeling (and looking) better.

If it hurts that bad, you need a doctor now. Please go to the emergency room tonight. You should not wait with a cat bite--they're nasty.
I am glad to hear Bandit is living up to her name, again, even though the consequences were painful for you.

I have to go in tomorrow for a tetanus shot.

Howard Berkowitz - 25 Mar 2005 03:24 GMT > > Catnipped, > > [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > for > an antibiotic. I have to go in tomorrow for a tetanus shot. I don't know, of course, how your policy reads. Many, however, will modify the ER co-pay if a "reasonable layman" would consider the situation an emergency. On checking my emergency medicine texts, an immediate oral antibiotic is reasonable.
The question is what is causing the pain. If the bite hit a nerve or a tendon, that probably is an emergency, quite likely requiring evaluation by a hand surgeon.
Many insurance companies have nurse hotlines that will help advise if something constitutes an emergency, when it's a tossup. Does your company have one? If so, I'd call.

The doctor called out Augmentin 500mg (Clavamox - ironic, that's what Bandit was taking!), and I've already taken one. The pain has receded, so I think I'll be OK until I can get to the doctor's office tomorrow and get a tetanus shot.
The copay for the ER is $200 - even if your arm has been detached!!! But if it's not deemed a real emergency then you have to pay the whole amount. I just got the new insurance, so I don't have all the numbers yet. In fact I know that my regular doctor takes this insurance so I have to find another GP, at least for this, tomorrow!

CatNipped
Mischief - 25 Mar 2005 03:49 GMT I know the feeling about the ER. Back at the beginning of march when I hurt my eye, the doctor looked at it, and said I had to go see the ophthamologist, and then charged me $100. *sigh*
I would take the ABs and keep a close eye on it. One of my coworkers got caught in the knuckle and his hand swelled and he couldn't work for a week.
Purrs,
Kristi

The best feeling to come out of one of those is knowing you wont have to get another one again for what - 10 years or so? I know I'm way past due.......my last one was from being stupid while out fishing one day wherein I sunk a #2 treble hook so deep in my right knee, that I had to go to the hospital the next day and have it taken out. The Dr. wouldn't let me leave until I agreed to the tetanus shot (yay) then, my dang arm hurt worse than my knee, and I was out $120.00.
See, that alone tells you how long it's been since I had to suffer one of those.......$120.00 for the shot and hook removal.

The bite sounds bad, especially in a joint :o( When Tucker bit me I went directly to the urgent care center, knowing how long it would take in the ER. They gave me Augmentin also and told me to watch it and if I started seeing red streaks to go to the ER. The next day I went back in because I wanted it looked at again (and didn't want to wait around in ER) and they gave me an injection (in the hip) of Rocephin and they told me to come back the next day to get it looked at again --the next day they gave me another shot of the Rocephin. The shots really helped it heal. I also did a lot of soaking in Epsom salt baths. Hope you get immediate and excellent care, please let us know. Christine

If you can't feel the fingertip or if it's numb, it's nerve damage. My mom severed a nerve with a butcher knife. She can't feel anything at the tip of her index finger on her left hand.
And i've got nerve damage in my elbow, though not from a cut. Half my left hand is numb. I'm frankly lucky I didn't have to pay for neurologist visits. Though...it's not as though 6 months of treatment have done too much ....

I can only offer the relatively new knowledge that peripheral (arms, legs, etc.) can regrow, although the process may take years.
mlbriggs - 25 Mar 2005 18:17 GMT >> Catnipped, >> [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > > CatNipped We are sending full strength purrs that you will get full strength treatment for your wounds. When TuTu fell off my lap a couple of years ago and her claws dug into my leg, it took many courses of antibiotics and 17 months to be cured. I have the scars to prove it. The last treatment was Cipro and it did the trick. I had waited too long because I was sick with the flu, Best wishes for a speedy recovery. MLB

Bandit is looking very lovely though (I rather like the new wavish hair cut). I hope that your injuries are well, and need nothing other than a good cleaning... Susan M - 25 Mar 2005 02:40 GMT > I was planning on going to see a doctor tomorrow, but it's hurting so > badly > I may consider going to the emergency room tonight. GO NOW to the doctor please. I've heard such terrible stories about people who've had as serious cat bites as yours.
... didn't I say something earlier about you being a devoted caregiver ....
... please don't beat yourself up about not checking her for burns (????????).
I hope that you get something for that hand and get better ASAP.
Glad Bandit is feeling better.

PatM - 25 Mar 2005 03:46 GMT Having been there, done that, I know how fast a cat bite can become infected. Your dh needs to understand that would be much more costly in the long run. And very painful for you! Just concerned...PatM

That last stitch must have really hurt. But she should get to feeling better now the stitches are out and healing rapidly. And it looks like the hair is growing back on her tummy. I hope your finger heals well. You did go to the doctor didn't you? Purrs,

(Nocturne at the vet is a bizarre case....she PURRS, does upside downy head for the vet, and overall has the entire place conned into thinking she's one of the sweetest kitties they know. DON'T BELIEVE HER LIES!!! I only fear the day she springs the truth on them!)

About 10 years ago, when I was worming Snoopy she gcaught my arm with her back claw. I had a deep cut from my wrist to my elbow, the then 3 year old boy who lived a couple of doors away, looked at my arm and said, very seroiusly, "you'll have to get your mummy to kiss it better" I laughed so much it stopped hurting.
