I was watching her waddle - yes, waddle! across the room.  I said okay,
enough is enough.  I weighed myself, then scooped her up.  I could barely
see the numbers on the scale!  My goodness, she weighs 20 lbs!

She's on Hill's prescription x/d food to prevent bladder stones.  She gets a
scoops of the crunchy (about 3/4 cup), one in the morning, one in the late
afternoon, which doesn't seem excessive.  She gets 1/2 a small can of the
gooshy stuff on Saturday along with one scoop of the crunchy and that's it.
I very rarely give her any people food and then only a tiny bit.  And, she
is a *long* cat.  But man, she's "fluffy" (and she's a shorthair)!  She's
also at least 6 years old, maybe 7.

Maybe I'll try cutting down on the amount of food in the scoop and go from
there.  She does play and get the zoomies at least once a day, but for the
most part she's sedentary.  I try to get her to play more but she usually
just looks at me as if to say if you want to play with that, go right ahead.
I'll watch :-o

What does her vet say?  Can you feel her ribs?  I've heard some people say
that dry food promotes obesity in cats  because the "filler" in dry food
doesn't made them feel "full" (although I haven't found that to be the case
with any of my four).  I have, however, started adding canned food to their
diet mixed with water, twice a day, because the vet thought that would help
Bandit's elevated BUN and creatinine levels.

I haven't taken her to the vet since she had her check-up last year after
her surgery.  I can feel her ribs if I mush my fingers into the "fluffiness"
:)

The thing is, the wet food is $25 a case; if I fed her that daily even
diluted with water it would last a month, maybe.  Even for the dry stuff,
it's $12 for a 4 lb. bag.  I'm BROKE. (sigh)

I certainly do care about her health and she seems to be a very happy and
content (not to mention adorable, loving!) cat, she's just "fluffy".  I
don't know what to do other than cut down on the amount in each twice a day
scoop of food.

I'll try to measure her length sometime.  I do know she can reach doorknobs,
no problem.

My gawd!!!  How many cans come in a case?  Let's see, I buy Science Diet by
the can and not the case, at $.50 per can (but that's with my "Pet Rewards"
card at PetsMart - it's normally $.70 per can), and my 4 cats eat 2 cans a
day (but they do get Science Diet dry free-fed to them too), so that's about
$30 - $31 a month for four cats.

Anyway, yeah - if you can't afford it you can't afford it and you need to
look at another way to either cut her calories or up her exercise.  Does she
like the red dot greebling?  Mine would spend hours a day chasing after it
if I could hold the button down that long!  ;>

Well, I would guess that, just like humans, as long as she's healthy and
happy she should be fine!

24 cans to a case, 5.5 oz. cans; average 30 days in a month.  Don't forget,
you can't buy this stuff at PetCo or whatever - it's prescription food.
Even my vet has to special order it; they don't keep it in stock.  I used to
order it online for slightly less money, but then they stopped doing the
free shipping so that made the price out of my range again.

She chases the red dot greebling briefly, then figures out she isn't gonna
catch it so she stops.  And that holding down the button thing is my pet
peeve - why can't you click it on like a flashlight so you don't have to
constantly press on the button???

I'll decrease the amount of dry food gradually per day and see if it makes a
difference.  Right now she's fussing because there is only a handful of
crunchies in her bowl.  Tough love, girl!

Ah, that's right, I forgot Persia was on a prescription diet!  Sorry!

i'll let you in on a little secret. for about $.23 you can go to Home Depot
or some such and buy a tiny O-ring, #78 it is:

Lowe's has the #78 and Home Depot have #78:  7/16 x 1/4 x 3/32
[in inches]

and it rolls right over the ON switch and stays there and does not
lose its stretchiness like an ordinary rubber band.

you can also build one, radio shlack has a 4xaa for $2.
you use 2 or 3 AA and in the last slot you put your laser
after you drill a hole or you can do it transversely

but the O-ring is simpler and cheaper, trust me :)

and for those who care, i tried the 635 nm red laser and
the far less expensive 650 nm red laser works just as well,
and my cat will even chase a 670 nm red laser.

i just knew you all wanted to know this in nanometers

Hmmm, make that #74 instead, a little bigger:
O-ring, Home Depot #74: 39/64 x 3/8 x 7/64.

Lowe's has some of these for like 10 for $1.30.

this is a project for those button lasers that are always
wearing out the batteries too quickly.

Catnipped, I guess you mean 50 *cents* a can, I can't imagine anyone
using 8 cans a day on 4 cats at &50 a can,  Jean. Laughing her butt off,
sorry Catnipped I just couldn't resist

Yep, I did!  ;>  And also, my four cats eat only 2 cans (not the tiny cans,
but not the big dog-food-sized cans either, the wide flat cans) a day
between them, so half a can a day per cat.  But they do free-feed on 2 cups
of dry food per day also (but that's never all eaten - most goes outside
every night to the stray cats).

I'd try just being stingy with the amount in the scoops and see if she is
still satisfied.

Cali only gets 3/8 of a cup per day of Hills Hairball Light + a couple of
mouthfuls of meat most days. But she still can't lose loose weight. She's
about 9 now and does not get too much exercise, other than the odd bout of
Smokey-cise. She weights about 11 pounds now, although she's only a 7 pound
kitty.

I'm TYCHE!  I'm FAT!  I weigh 11 pounds just like Uncle Smokey even
though he's a tom and longer than me!

I like to eat everything in sight!  My sister is a skinny minny!

My dream is to be a WHALE!!!

--Love Tyche.

(I don't know what to do with our fatty fat-fat...the others are so
good and Tyche's just a little glutton...)

If it helps you judge, my 3 cats get 1/2 SMALL china mug of dried food
between them a day served in the morning, and 3/4 - 1 large 400g can of
gooshy food split into morning and evening. So, in total, they get about
30g of dried and 150g of wet each, daily. Both Pandora and Cleo are
"Fluffy", but HRFL Tiger is just about right. He gets the most exercise
of the 3 though.
