'Arm', 'Leg' Becomes New Price Of Gas In Baltimore POSTED: 6:26 am EST March 23, 2005 BALTIMORE -- A gas station in a Baltimore suburb posted new gas prices Tuesday, but not without some commentary.
Instead of the normal prices on their sign, the owners of the station at the corner of York Road and Seminary Avenue displayed "arm" and "leg" as the prices. The gas station owners may be hoping to send a signal to motorists that the local gas station is not to blame for the rising prices. For those who choose not to hand over a part of their body for the right to fill up, the station is still accepting cold, hard cash -- a gallon of unleaded is $2.15 at the station. The national average price for gasoline has been rising rapidly over the last few weeks.

I'd be *very* happy to pay your "arm and a leg"; it hasn't been that cheap for years!

You're right, the US probably has the cheapest gasoline in the world. Which is one of the reasons people drive so many gas guzzlers here... :) Regular gasoline at my neighborhood station was 1.99 a gallon, Texas has low gas prices compared with the rest of the nation.

A couple of years ago, DH was sent to Manchester, England by the company he worked for. He computed the cost of gas (liters-gallons & #/EU$-US$), and it came out to around US$9 per gallon! No wonder the Mini Cooper is so popular over there. Ouch!

The BP-Amoco plant (I worked for Amoco for 10 years before BP bought them out) had a *HUGE* explosion - 14 dead, 1 missing, and hundreds seriously injured (this is the *second* such explosion with a year!!!). BP-Amoco is one of the largest, if not *the* largest, producer of oil and gas in the US and the Texas City refinery accuont for one third of its production.
I think the authorities thought for a while that it might have been terrorism because when I was coming home from work yesterday I saw about 10 or more contrails in the sky (meaning there were military jets flying), but not a *SINGLE* commercial plane was taking off or landing at the airport (I live just north of the airport and it seems sometimes that the planes tires will graze the roof of my car). There are normally about 5 or 6 commercial planes in the sky around my house at all times - IAH is one of the busiest airports in the country - but not a single one yesterday at that time.
It wasn't terrorism, just bad safety management (BP is *ALWAYS* being cited by OSHA for safety violations). If I sound bitter about BP, well, I am. They cost me a great job, my retirement, my family's security, and a much brighter future than I have now. They make their money from take-overs of other companies, then do their usual "rape and pillage" number on them - firing all knowledgeable, seasoned employees and hiring contractors to do the job in a half-@$$ed fashion (it was contractors running this particular area of the plant that had the explosion).

Purrs to the family, friends and colleagues who have been effected by this tragedy. In this day and age of technology and safety knowledge, *any* loss of life is entirely unnecessary and a sign of something seriously wrong in tehir procedures.
And bugger baout the price of gas going up - even though its cheaper than many other places, it will still put a strain on many family's already stretched budgets.

The guy at Shamrock said it is going up another 10 cents every month till summer!! One person heard it is supposed to top out at $2,50 and another heard $3.00. I sure hope my company gives us a raise on our mileage. I get paid for 600-700 miles a month. But I don't get paid for the 100 miles a day I drive to-from work! No wonder I just had to buy new tires. At about 3000 miles a month, tires don't last long.

Yeah I know it was a long time ago, but I *can* remember And I can remember when they published the first announcements that gas prices were expected to rise to as much as sixty-five cents a gallon (we were them paying about thirty-five cents). Everyone was saying "No one will pay that much!" (Surprise!)

Christina Websell - 23 Mar 2005 23:46 GMT LOL!! You don't know what an arm and a leg means to pay for gas. Here in England it is minimum 79.9 pence PER LITRE. 4.5ish litres to a UK gallon. I can hardly afford to drive to work every day..and I can't get there on public transport.
