Help - did I hurt Otis?

Hi there:

I'm worried sick about Otis.

I rather childishly went to slam our back door (looooong story) and Otis
chose that moment to try to rush outside into the freezing weather and snow
(????).  The door bounced back off of him and he shot right back into the
house.

He went to the basement where he slunk around for a while and then found the
guest bed and curled up as if to sleep -  but you could tell he was all
shaken up.  I wanted to see if he was walking ok so I called them upstairs
to feed them.  He came upstairs but not straight up.  He was slow and his
rear end was to one side.

He ate like a pig.  Seems to be walking ok now but went right back
downstairs to curl up on the bed again.  He doesn't usually sleep there.  I
wonder if he's got some kind of mild shock thing going.

How do I know I didn't do any internal damage or anything and that he'll
bleed internally or something?  He could just be bruised but what if I hurt
him?  TED is closed for the night or I'd call him.  I will call in the
morning and ask what to watch for.

This isn't the first time he's been caught in the door - he's done this once
before - but the door wasn't being slammed like this.

Ugh.  I feel sick.

IMHO - couple of reasons I don't think he's injured
seriously....first, eating like a pig is a good sign, and
you did see him walking normally after awhile, didn't
you? I think the soft bed appeals to him because his
butt is probably sore as hell, but I think if he had
internal damage he wouldn't have eaten, much less
made it to the food bowl.
See how he is later on.....

Hope Otis is feeling better now

I agree- cats are incredibly tough in some ways. Let me give an
example.

The day before this happened we had heard the tragic news that
Redunzel and Sarrasine's sister had accidentally been stood on and had
to be PTS as a result so we were being incredibly careful. Even more
careful than one normally is with 5 month old kittens

I was shuttting the bedroom door and for reasons best known to herself
Redunzel decided to insert her paw in the gap where the hinges
are.....I pulled up short as soon as I saw her but not before the door
had trapped her paw. I swear I heard a crunch! And did she howl!!!!!

I opened the door and tried to grab her but she bolted into the
kitchen on three legs with her little paw held off the ground....

We were both panicking and looking for our vet's emergency number when
she walked back into the living room, on all fours, not limping and
demanded lunch. Ate her lunch and settled down for a nap. I took the
opportunity to check her foot and it was wasn't hot or swollen and she
let me touch it without flinching in fact she seemed puzzled by what
the fuss was about.

That reminds me of when I trapped my son Philips hand in the outhouse door
where we kept the coal, unknown to me he'd followed me and had his fingers
in thehinged part of the door, I didn't slam it but when it didn't close
properly I opened it a little way and the pulled harder, then Phil let out
an almighty yell. I was nearly out of my mind, but actually his fingers were
fine apart from a bit of swelling thank goodness  Jean.P.

My mom's kitten had the same thing happen, except the door actually
closed all the way (it's an old metal door that does not quite seal). My
mom thought for sure her kitten would not survive, but she showed no
signs of any problems.
Purrs for Otis.

Eddie the dog had the door bounce off his fat butt a few times because
he can't quite figure out 'Moving big thing might hurt'. He got sore
for a few days but was fine.

(((((((((Susan)))))))))

I suspect he's okay.  Cats are amazingly tough.  Skeeter (RB) once got
caught by the garage door (automatic closer).  He was at one side of the
door, which closed completely.  I blamed myself, because I tried to grab her
instead of pushing the button to stop the door.  I felt the way you do, but
when I opened the door, she walked off, and she was perfectly okay.  I still
don't understand it, because there was about one inch clearance between the
door and the side molding.  Anyway, she never suffered any ill effects.

I now have a new door and a sophisticated closer that stops closing if
anything crosses the doorway while it's closing.  I still watch it close,
with my finger hovering over the button, if there's a cat in sight.

Like others have said, if he's eating, he's probably OK.  Purrs for both of
you.

Poor Otis, and poor you!  I would watch Otis carefully.  This reminds
me of when I was hit by a car when I was little.  I was perfectly
fine, but they hospitalized me for 24 hours, ran some blood tests, and
let me go.  I think they figured that if there was any internal damage
due to blunt trauma, it would become evident within a day.

from your description, he sounds like he's okay, especially if he's
eating and walking.  But I would watch him like a hawk for the next 24
hours and if he seems off in any way, take him to the vet.

Awww, poor Otis.  I'm sure he'll be fine though, cats are very
rubbery.  The fact that he ate lots and came up and down the stairs a
couple of times is a good sign.  He's probably just in shock a bit.
Purrs for Otis and for your nerves.

If the door was slammed really hard, I'd been worried as heck and I'd get
him to a vet in the morning.

Keep a close eye on him - do not put him out for several days - if he
doesn't completely recover in 3 days, take him to TED for an x-ray.

Purrs to you and Otis. It sounds to me as if he was bruised, but not
seriously hurt if he's eating 'like a pig' and walking normally now.
Just keep an eye on him.

I would take him to the vet's and let them check him out. Better safe
then sorry. There is no way for you to tell if their is internal damage.
Only the vet can tell that. I hope Otis is ok. Purrs both to your and to
Otis.

Oh Susan, I know just how you feel.  Here in Houston at certain times of the
year the humidity is so high that doors swell up and you have to slam them
in order to get them closed.  I was right in the middle of slamming my door
when Sammy decided to run out of it - this was when she was only about 4 or
5 months old.  It scared the bejeesus out of her, but she wasn't hurt (I'll
never know how not, because I slammed that door *HARD*).  I checked her ribs
and spine, felt her all over, prodded everything and she seemed fine, but I
took her to the vet immediately anyway (it happened during the day) and they
said nothing was wrong.

Have you poked and prodded?  Are there any spots on his body that he reacts
to with pain (growling or jerking away)?  I think there is a good chance
that, like Sammy, nothing got harmed, but is is always better to be safe
than sorry and get him to the vet as soon as they open (or to an emergency
vet if he starts having any atypical symptoms).

Hugs,

My kitchen door has to be slammed in order to be closed. Over the
years, I've caught a cat in it a few times. They never suffer any
damage whatsoever. But it sure seems bad, doesn't it? He'll be OK.

Susan,

Did you call the vet? What did they say? How is Otis doing?

Purrs that Otis is just fine, and for your frayed nerves, too.  These
things happen sometimes.

Lots of purrs for Otis. Most likely you haven't caused any long term
harm. You've reminded me me of an incident 12 years ago, I was having a
restless night, tossing and turng trying to sleep. My bed was by the
wall and as I turned over I banged Snoopy's head into the wall with my
elbow, it hurt me and I was worried sick that I'd hurt her. Thankfully
she was fine and forgave me straight away, it took me longer to forgive
myself even though it was accidental.

Poor Snoopy, as I was typing this she was frightened by a RAF Tornado
flying over the house at about 250'
