I'll be picking up little Mere on Thursday after work. I'm pretty
apprehensive about it all. How will the oldies react?
Nikki has certainly mellowed a lot the last few years. Last summer, when
one of Kira's kittens from her previous litter was out on the island,
Nikki didn't act aggressive towards him, except when he foolishly tried
to charge her. Same thing for Kira the previous summer, when she was
just a kitten herself. I hope they will both be kind to little Mere.
Frank has always been kind to kittens, but lately he's become a somewhat
grumpy old boy, so I can't be sure about him.
Mere is a picky eater. She won't have any of the kitten food my niece
has tried, neither dry nor wet. She does eat meat, fish and chicken, but
that's not quite enough for a growing kitten. I'm going to try and mix
some kitten food (from a pouch with chunks and gravy) into her minced
meat, increasing the amount of catfood gradually. We'll see if I can't
teach her to eat properly.
I'm stocking up so I won't have to leave home between Thursday evening
and Tuesday morning (I'm off work due to Easter being a holiday here).
if I have to go out anyway, I'll probably shut the baby up in the
bathroom, but i don't want to keep her there too much. It's a fair-sized
room, but I'll still feel sorry for her, all alone and probably missing
her siblings. Besides, Frank hates closed doors and is perfectly able to
open them, so the bathroom door might not stay shut anyway.
OK, going to think about what more can go wrong. Please purr for little
Mere to be accepted into the family soon.

Purrs that all will go well, that you can get her to eat properly and that
your oldsters will accept her into the family post haste.

Purring for Mere (how pronounce?). Do you have a little radio in the
bathroom to keep her company? Best wishes for happy family. MLB

> Purring for Mere (how pronounce?).
That's a bit of a problem, and why I may end up changing her name. I'm
pronouncing it Meer (it's short for Cashmere, so like you would
pronounce the end of that word), my niece is pronouncing it more like
mare (Swedish pronunciation), and in Finnish it would be meh-reh
(Finnish pronounces every letter in a word very clearly, the r is
rolling like in Scottish). This just makes for a lot of confusion
because I use all those languages on a daily basis, the vet may be
Finnish- or Swedish-speaking, etc.
Of course, the Meer pronunciation would tie her in to something Russian
(she is a Russian Blue, after all, though she won't be a registered
one); the space station Mir. ;o)

Purrs for a smooth family integration, Marina. =o) (Let's hope little Mere
doesn't emulate the space station too often when it comes to crashing to
Earth. ;o) Concentrate on thinking calm loving thoughts when you're near
her. I think that as long as the two older cats don't actually attempt to
harm Mere, a little grumpiness probably won't hurt her. She'll have to
learn the limits of the tolerance of the senior members of the household,
after all. Pan puts Nina in her place on a frequent basis, and Francesca
too, sometimes. ANd then later on, I'll find the whole family curled up
together on my bed. For an old guy who had his space invaded by young ones,
Pan has been quite a gentleman. But no one should expect saintly behavior
from a cat who hasn't eaten his breakfast, yet. =o)

I have a colleague who's name is Mere and she pronounces it the Finnish
way. Let's hope that your little Mere will be like the meaning for the
Russian word "mir" - "peace" (tho it also means "world").

Oooh, I'd forgotten that mir means peace. Now *that's* a good name.
Now you made me realise, the Swedish word for peace is fred, as good a
name as any for a boycat. ;o)

Oliver says he is confused. Would Mere be his little sister or his
Auntie? :-)
It might be stressful at first but it could prove invigorating for both
Nikki and Frank. They may enjoy having someone to show the ropes.
We're purring and tail wagging that everything goes smoothly!

Thank you Polonca. There's another thing I forgot to mention; Nikki
doesn't sleep nearly as much as Frank does. So you'd think she'd like to
have a playmate, wouldn't you? This might be wishful thinking, though.
Maybe Nikki prefers to potter about on her own.

Of course PURR PURR PURR!! :) As for eating and a finicky eater
(Scarlett), try to not give in about other foods. I have made this
mistake and its hard to reverse. It got to where I thought any food
was better than no eating, and of course it is, but the mistake I
made was letting everyone eat together. The kittens learned that
the wider variety of adult food was what they wanted and there was
no getting them back on kitten food. I should have kept doing what
I'm back to doing now, and that is separating everyone at mealtime.
They still of course come running to see what Shamrock and Bonnie
had but by the time I let them out of the kitten room, they're done
with, or mostly done with theirs.
Another thing I just learned is to make sure to keep kittens claws
trimmed short. THe younger, more rambuncious kittens tend to play
rougher, or have less control of their claws and retraction.
Yesterday, Rhett hooked Shamrock's face pretty good just above the
eye. I thought it was superficial but apparently not because
Shamrock's eye is swollen and red as of coming home from work
tonight; it appears that his claw went right through the upper lid.
I trimmed everyone after having to disconnect Rhett's claw from
Shamrock's face, but the damage was done. Shamrock has to go to TED
in the morning. From now on, no kittens will have hooky claws.
Regular trimming. That would be my advice for dealing with new
kittens.
Good luck Marina! You're going to have so much fun!! I hope F&N do
too!

Yes, I'm planning to feed Mere separately. We'll see how it goes with
teaching her to eat 'proper' kitten food. Apaprently, she's very
interested in all kinds of people food, and will happily sample just
about anything, except the kitten food.

YAY! Pictures, please!!!
From everything I've heard and experienced, it is much easier to integrate a
kitten into a household with cats than an adult cat. When Sammy came to
live with us she even hopped on *BANDIT'S* back and was allowed to live!!!!
When a kitten sees an adult cat's paw drawn back for a swat they will
instinctively "surrender" by rolling over onto their back and exposing their
belly. The adult cat will then instinctively hold back (after maybe a swat
or two to teach the youngster a lesson). So, hopefully, everything will go
smoothly.
Hugs,
CatNipped
