 Hey all!

Clumsy old me fell down the stairs the other night and I fractured
my right hand. I now have a cast on and I'm on Darvocet for pain. <g>
I need some spare purrs please that I won't need surgery to repair my
hand. Doctor says the bone that I broke usually has the blood supply cut
off to it and will die. He's 90% sure I'll need surgery but will know
for sure in 2 weeks. I know there are a lot of purr requests but this is
only my second time in 8 years. Thanks in advance.

There are always enough purrs to go around, Dan - they're a self-renewing
source!  Many purrs coming that you won't need surgery.

Yes it is. Missy has already found out that rubbing her face against
the cast feels great. Both Missy and Psycho have figured out that Daddy
has a left hand that's just as good for petting. <g>

Bob, there are always spare purrs to go around for everyone in need.
Many purrs winging their way over the Atlantic for your hand to get
better without the surgery. Deepest sympathy, too, since I've had to
have hand surgery eight times.

There's no limit (that I know of) on purr requests ... Purring that you won't
need surgery, but also purring that regardless of whether or not you get
surgery, your hand regains its full strength and movement.

Purrs that you will heal quickly with or without the surgery Bob M.
Sounds like you have the pain management under control. <g>  My doctor
prescribes vicodin to me for my headaches, but they really don't seem
to make the pain go away.  They just make it so I don't give a crap
about it.  Maybe that's how they're supposed to work?

How will having to wear a cast affect your work?  If I remember
correctly, you're a Police Officer aren't you?

Very recently retired after 20 years of service. Right now I'm enjoying
not doing anything. I'd like to get back into flight school and start a
second career as a commuter airline pilot. Not sure if I'm too old or
not, I'm 44, but it would be a dream come true. I can't imagine getting
paid to fly. Heck, I'd do it for free!

Healing purrs are on their way.  I'll throw in some extra ones that you
don't need surgery and that you don't feel much pain.  Are you right-handed?
Even if you aren't, I learned just how much I use the other hand when I
sprained my left wrist years ago, so I know a lot of things are difficult,
on top of the pain and worry.

Ouch.  I know what you are going through, having once both broken and
severely sprained a finger in a fall.  As I understand it, different
bones heal at different rates, according to the blood supply.  My
finger healed relatively quickly (two weeks in a cast, followed by
three weeks in a splint that I could remove when I wanted to wash my
hands), but a friend of mine once broke his forearm and had to wear a
cast for almost three months.

When the cast comes off, your hand will probably have stiffened from
disuse (the tendons shrink), and so you will have to go through
stretching exercises to get back the full mobility.

Also, you will probably find that any injured joints will be very
sensitive to changes in air pressure at first.  My finger joint
initially hurt if I so much as went up three or four floors in an
elevator, or drove over a hill.  This sensitivity will gradually fade
over time, although it may never go away completely.  My finger joint
now hurts only if I fly in a plane, or if a severe low-pressure area
(cold front) is about to come through.

The orthopedist told me that most joints, and also bones themselves,
have small air pockets inside.  If the outside air pressure goes down,
the bubble of air inside expands.  The change is small enough that you
don't generally notice it unless the tissue around the air pocket is
already sore.

So sorry Bob.   I know how you feel.   Purrs from B & C.   Actually poor
Bonnie knows how you feel too, as she is just starting to walk around
again after her accident.

I always wondered what caused that. I have an old injury form back in
1981 on the same hand. I broke my thumb playing football. To this day I
can always tell when we are going to get a cold front because the thumb
starts to ache. Now I know why. Thanks.

I'm not sure that's the same thing.  My knees are sensitive to weather
changes, but AFAIK it's because my cartilege is "fuzzy" (damaged) and that
produces arthritis.

That's okay, Bob. I don't think Purrs are in danger of being rationed. =o)
Many purrs that the hand will be okay without surgery.  But if you have to
have surgery, I hope the discomfort and inconvenience to you will be
minimal.  Which it will, when you compare it to the lifelong discomfort and
inconvenience of having your right hand impaired for life.
