My dark calico cat Thalia has found a new favorite place: inside my paper
shredder! She has jumped in several times over the last two or three days.

This really isn't the best place for a kitty, and it's also quite difficult
for her to get out. I've had to lift her out several times.
Right now I've put a notebook over the opening in hopes of discouraging her.

Oh my. Yes, that is not good. Maybe you can put a box next to it that is
more attractive.

I'd certainly make sure it is unplugged so she does not accidentally hit the
start button.

Ack, mercy yes. I do not like the image I get from that idea. =o(
Art, is there any way the paper shredder can be stowed in a closet or
something when you don't need it? Unfortunately, cats always have
incredible drive to be in the one place where you absolutely don't want
them!

Looking at that picture makes me feel the way I do when I'm reaching
into the garbage disposal to retrieve something. On the other hand,
Thalia sure is pretty. And she'll remain that way as long as the
switch isn't flipped. Yikes!
Gabey8 - 18 Mar 2005 23:44 GMT
Yikes. Not only keep it covered when it's not in use, but maybe keeping it
unplugged as well would be a good idea.
How is it that felines are so CREATIVE in finding ways to test the "cats
have nine lives" theory? ;o)

Got a spray bottle? That and keeping it unplugged might be one way to
discourage her. Perhaps a large garbage bag to cover it when not in use
might also discourage her. I hope you find a suitable solution to this
dangerous problem. MLB

How wide is the opening? None of the paper-shredders I've
encountered will pass through more than a dozen or so sheets
of paper at a time! (Much too narrow for even the tiniest
of kittens.)

Oh, inappropriate kitty ! :)
Unplug it and encourage her to find a new lair.

Yeah - if you looked at the photo, she jumps in the big
human-retrieve-the-shreds opening, not the small paper-feeding slot. The
sharp machinery seems well shrouded underneath, so I guess the risk is
minimal.
Anyway, with the notebook on top, she seems to have lost interest in the
contraption. So I didn't have to act on several of the suggestions you
folks kindly gave.

You're very kind. There's been nothing really remarkable and worthy of being
recounted of late.

Cute! I love her name. It's one we considered for DS, if he had been
of the female persuasion. :)
