I'm a wreck, I'm a total wreck!  My hands are shaking so badly that when I
was getting a saucer down to give Bandit some mineral oil in tuna water, as
per doctor's instructions for the constipation, I dropped it - shattered
it - and cut up my finger all to h*ll!

The vet said she had a *SMALL* spot on her shoulder that was removed.  Don't
click this link if you are easily disturbed, but this is what my poor baby
looks like now:

http://www.possibleplaces.com/CatNipped/Bandit_Boo_Boo_Three/

All of her belly skin was removed last Wednesday.  Then today most of her
back skin *AND* most of her side skin had to be removed.  She looks like
Frankenstein's cat!!  I'm not worried about her appearance, I would love her
no matter what she looks like, but it *HURTS* me to see her looking like
this - I can't even imagine the pain she must be in.  Oh gawd, I gotta go, I
need a good cry!!!

Egad!!! Did the vet not prescribe ANYTHING for her pain?

Yes, she's still under the injected pain meds they gave her after surgery
and I have some Torbutrol tablets for tonight and this weekend.  She's
sleeping right now, and I'm trying to stay in another room to let her rest -
but it's hard for me to see her like that.

Poor Bandit, and poor you!!  I would ask the vet for the name of the company
that makes those heating bags.  Those things are clearly unsafe!  I know you
said the vet reported the problem, but I would call them too for good
measure, AND send them pictures of what they did to Bandit!

Excellent suggestion, Kelly.  The more people who complain the better,
especially with visual aids.

I know how hard this is.  {{{{HUGS}}}}

Have you thought about doing a website about your experience with those
bags?  Let others know about what happened?  You do such nice work and
it might help to get the word out.

Good idea! Plus it might help you deal with your stress. You know,
get it out of your system and help others at the same time.

Soothing purrs for both of you, Lori.  My, you have both certainly
been through it.  Sincerely hoping that this is the end of her
troubles, and she will be feeling (if not looking) a lot better very
soon.

Bandit may look like Frankencat, but she doesn't appear in pain.  She
actually looks rather like Smokey on any given day, but balder.  She's
just pokin', is all. ;)  It looks like she will heal up nicely from
the burns; whether she can heal from the indignity of looking like a
motheaten fur stole will remain to be seen.

Bandit's too tough to stay down for long, but we're sending her purrs
anyway.
And soem for her poor frazzled meowmie.

CN, all I can say is to hang in there. ONe of the things that comes
with being caretakers of these beautiful animals is to take it all
as it comes, with a clear head, and take care of them. As you are
doing. I've been reading, not posting, but can understand your
frustration. As one who's been through mistakes made by vets either
by neglect or by accident, its hard to just move on and take care
of them but that is what you need to do. With Shadow, he suffered
many many mistakes by his internal medicine vet; first was her
using a feeding tube that was too large for a cat (her thinking was
to get more food in and heal his liver sooner by giving a larger
passage. This first caused him to be sick for days because I had no
idea I was pushing food in too fast, and second, when it couldn't
be removed normally, it also couldn't be removed by inserting a
scope to pull it out through his throat.  She damaged his throat by
trying many many times, requiring 3 tries with anesthesia in a
week, finally admitting defeat and having it removed surgically. I
can't tell you how bad I worried about my sick cat being put under
so much, and he didn't get to eat for most of that week and he'd
just been "cured" of hepatic lipidosis because he wouldn't eat. He
never meowed again due to scar tissue).  Then, Lori, he had a
bleeding ulcer, or maybe it was due to the pulling on the feeding
tube through his stomach lining to remove it, but he vomitted so
much blood that I had to rush him to her clinic and he nearly died
on the way. His life-saving transfusion resulted in him contracting
feline leukemia because that vet didn't test the donor cat often
enough (well, ok, it was a new donor cat).

Then there is Scarlett. A small, emaciated, weak kitten who was
spayed after several cancellations due to her URI and eye problems.
You already know what she went through because I posted it only
recently. It was no ones fault that she got infected, or had a bad
reaction to the subQ sutures. But I sure felt like hell about it.

You think you're doing a good thing by taking care of routine
issues (spay, or in Bandits case, dental work), only to have a
freak side effect, or a freak accident that results in hurting our
babies.  No matter what, it just needs tending to.  To keep a clear
head, and not let your worries and your anger feed through to your
cat. Because, they CAN sense your emotions. You just talk happy to
her, and in a calm voice, and no "poor kitty" crap because they can
sense this. I believe that. You just have to get past it to the
other side where you'll have a happy healthy cat who will never
ever remember all of this.

Purrs,

You sound like Dr. Phil!  ;>  But you're absolutely right.  In fact just the
other day he was counseling parents of a child that had had a heart
transplant and told them that they were doing the child no favor by feeling
sorry for him and spoiling him.  He said they should be empowering him and
enabling him to lead an active productive life and not crippling him with
*their* guilt.

You're a very wise lady Cheryl, thanks!

Dearest Catnipped,
My heart truly goes out to you and Bandit. What a terrible thing for you
both to have to go through. I do hope Bandit's pain is controlled by the
meds and that she is not suffering. She is fortunate to have such a loving
caretaker. I hope you have lots of support to help you through this
difficult time. Try to stay strong to help her to be brave and please know
that we are all sending loving and healing thoughts your way. Keep us
posted.
Luv and purrs,
Lynn

YAAAAAA!!!  What hoppen!?  I would be in a panic if I saw that too,
but looking at it objectively (which is probably impossible when
you're the slave), as long as the wounds don't get infected, and there
aren't any more of them, she'll be as good as new in no time.

But non-objectively speaking again, AAAHHHHH!!!

What a poor, poor kitty! :(

You need to take this cat to another vet - a feline specialist.  This
is not from burns.  She has a systemic infection or something.  I think
your vet is just trying to CHA now.

Gabey8 - 19 Mar 2005 20:10 GMT
Purrs for your injured finger and, of course, for Bandit's continued
recovery.

If your vet hasn't taken pics of Bandit's injuries, and the resulting
surgeries that she's had to undergo, my advice is to give her copies of
whatever shots you've taken so far.

She might want them to help document just HOW much damage those
(#@*$&@#(*&$ heating bags have caused. If the bags were faulty and caused
this kind of injury when they were used according to instruction, then IMO
the company that made them ought to be held accountable. God knows how
many other pets and their families have been put through this, along with
you and Bandit.

Argh.

Donna, Captain, and Stanley

P.S. If your finger sustained anything more than a superficial wound from
that cut, have a doctor take a look at it. You don't need an infected
finger EVER, but especially not NOW when you're administering Bandit's
post-surgery wound care.

I mention this because if you're like me, you'd prefer to tough out just
about anything instead of going to a doctor for yourself, even though for
the CATS, you'll willingly go straight to the vet if there's even a small
symptom of a problem. Treat yourself with the same care as you'd bestow on
the feline kids. Your finger will thank you. ;o)
