       Misunderstood
Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage, Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry - So much to regret.
Hmm . . . Yes there it is, right on the top.
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my bowl hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things and take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage, to never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see.
But I do come with baggage -
So will you still want me?

Same here.  I'll have to read this when I get impatient with Lucy's long
drawn out integration process.

Makes me want to go home and hug all three of the little furballs.

Good poem!

It sounds like Smokey when we first got him.

On the base:  "Y'got food?  Y'got food?  Y'got food?"

Once we got him home:

"It's morning now, so...do I still live here?"
"My bowl's empty...do I still live here?"
"OMG I spilled litter, do I still live here?"
"Nox hissed at me, do I still live here?"
"Sorry I played so rough with you.  Do I still live here?"

It took TWO AND A HALF YEARS for Smokey to finally do a "shove over,
this is MY couch" to us.  And we were GLAD to see it.

It's funny how we look for what we'd ordinarily call "bad" behavior with
our rescues.  If one of the other cats wakes me at 3 am for pettins, I
give pettins, but I'm grouchy and let the cat know it.  With Calvin, I'm
so thrilled that he trusts me enough to wake me up.

With Merlin, it was climbing on furniture, playing with kitty toys, and
recently, stealing people food.  He's finally comfortable enough to know
that we expect him to go after our plates.

It still amazes me to see Molly act like she's been caught doing something
wrong.  Wonder if she will ever relax enough to learn there is very little a
cat isn't allowed to do around this house.

Just a bit ago I "caught" her trying to get a drink from the faucet. She
startled and backed away.  And looked so amazed when I turned it on to just
a slight drip and walked away.

Jake on the other hand knows perfectly well he can get away with murder.
And he does.

That's very cute.  Betty doesn't like being "caught" doing fairly
ordinary things, like eating, drinking, or using the litter box.  I
studiously try to ignore her if I walk in on her doing those things.

Felix doesn't mind an audience for intake (he's a social eater,
AAMOF), but does get a tad irked if someone walks in on him in the
litterbox.

Nikki doesn't like me to see her on the litterbox, either. However, when
I'm on *my* 'litterbox', she is allowed to come in and stare at me as if
I'm doing something utterly ridiculous.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.  I consider Persia a "rescue" since she
was apparently abandoned - front declawed and spayed but left out in the
cold (below freezing).  I did try to find her owners.  But it only took a
couple of days for her to get over the initial "Do I live here now?" fear.
And in fact, she climbed up on the bed with me the first night I brought her
in.  She was purring loudly, rather distressedly, like maybe I'd say she was
doing something wrong.  I'd never had a cat before so it didn't occur to me
she was doing anything wrong :)  My little dog Sampson (RB) always slept
with me so I considered it a compliment she got right up on the bed with me.
When I woke up, I looked around and thought, do I really have a cat in the
house?  I couldn't see her - because she was on the pillow above my head!

Didn't take her long to claim the place, even though I was looking for her
family.  Called all the area vets and shelters and put up posters with her
picture.  She, of course, had other ideas.  It only took 3 days (yes, I'm
stupid) before I realized she was here to stay.  Only took her 5 days to
discover she could open the pantry door where the kitty food was and select
a can of Fancy Feast for me.  She can't eat that any more, but she loves her
prescription gooshy food (she only gets it on Saturdays).

Thanks for the thoughtful poem.  I need to go through my collection to
find the special one I've been wanting to post.  MLB
