Bandit's Out of Surgery

CatNipped - 18 Mar 2005 17:12 GMT
The vet just called and said Bandit is out of surgery and she's already up
and walking around the cage (and swiping at everyone who comes to check on
her).  She also said she found another area of burn on her shoulder and
removed that as well as the burn on her back.  The belly wound was healed
enough for her to take out all those stainless steel stitches (which were
due to come out next Wednesday, so she healed quicker than expected).
Because of where the new wounds were, on the back and shoulder, she was able
to use subQ stitches except for 3 outside stitches where the vet wanted some
extra strength at a "pull point" in the skin.  She said that she might not
even have to wear the e-collar unless I'm going to be out of the house for a
while.

The vet also checked Bandit's BUN again and it's 24.9, so that's *VERY*
good.  She said that Bandit's red blood cell count is a bit low, but that's
to be expected since every time she takes off skin Bandit loses some blood
and at her age she doesn't replace it as quickly as a younger cat would.
Bandit will just have to have lots of goodies to build her strength up
again.  ;>  I was also concerned that Bandit had not had a bowel movement,
so the vet checked that too and said it wasn't impacted so she didn't need
an enema, just some lactone in her treats.

I asked the vet about reporting the defective heating "bags" and she said
yes, she reported it to the surgeon who recommended it, the manufacturer,
the FDA, and all the vet internet boards that's she's on.  She also told me
that they had another case like Bandit's about a week afterwards (but before
I found Bandit's burn so they did not yet know about the bags).  So she's
really "hot" on the issue of these bags.  I even felt a bit bad for the vet
because when she was on the phone she said, "You know, we try to find the
best procedures to treat our patients and give them the best possible care.
We want to help cats with all the knowledge and latest technology available,
and when that ends up hurting a patient that makes my stomach tie up in
knots."  I could tell she was sincere, not just trying to placate me.  She
really cares about cats and she feels terrible that Bandit got hurt.  I hate
that it had to happen to my baby, but things like this happen and at least,
so far, Bandit is recovering from her ordeal.

So, I'm going to pick up my baby in 3 1/2 hours and she'll continue to be
spoiled rotten.  She won't have to have any more hydrotherapy, and she'll
only need one more dose of antibiotics, so that will make her happy.  She
still has pain medicine left for the next few days so I'll be able to keep
her comfortable.

Thank you for all the purrs and good wishes, I really appreciate your
support through this trying time.

That's great news! There's something to be said for being a tough old lady
cat!

Isn't it funny how, with certain cats, you can tell whether they are
feeling better by how aggressive they are? I have one like that!

Oh goodness. I'm so glad it's turning out well. And kudo to the vet for
reporting the faulty bags to everyone except the CIA. ;o)

I was wondering if that might be a dimunitive of Komondo Dragon.

Apropos my earlier response, it probably got reported to the FBI, but
they lost it.

LOL, yeah - some poor secret agent s.o.b. is probably stuck reading all
these posts we make.  Can you imagine having a job where you have to sift
through 2,000 posts a day on rpca looking for seditious ramblings??!
[Actually, I think I'd like that job!]  ;>  <waves hand>  Hello FBI agent,

LMHO!!! Yeah, I'm with you! I mean, we read a zillion RPCA posts a day
ANYway, so why not get paid? ;o)

Anyhow, I'm so glad that Bandit's results are so good, and that her
recovery is progressing smoothly.

I feel sorry for the vet. I can only imagine how terrible I'd feel if I
somehow accidentally caused someone's pet to be injured, WITHOUT the added
guilt of being the VET whose job it is to keep said pet healthy. She must
feel horrible, and I'm all for seeing her raise a ruckus about the faulty
heating devices.

Purrs going out for Bandit, you, the vet, and the other kitty the vet's
treating who got hurt by the heating bags, too. And the other kitty's
humans(s), too, because the cat's family is probably plenty upset over
this.

OT of course, but they already have technology that "reads" any feed
and alerts whomever cares based on keywords. ;)  Same with audio
feed. It's pretty interesting technology. It can even detect
dialects; northern US dialect vs. southern, American english language
with accents... be afraid.  Muhahahhaha  lol

LMAO! (Not at you, ping ;o)) It suddenly struck me, going further up the
thread, that some poor little secret agent stuck reading RPCA because we
mentioned the CIA and FBI is probably now looking at Pings post and
wondering WTF the "code" written by "Ping" means!!!

We can but hope that they have a sense of humor and cats.  That way
they'd actually have a chance to understand the synergy that occurs in
this group.

Yay for Bandit!  If I hadn't seen pictures of her, I would have thought that
you have a little mountain lion on your hands.

Alls well that ends well.  It really sounds as if you have a great vet.
When you get home tonight, have a glass of wine, or chocolate, or both and
unwind.  You and yours deserve it.

This is certainly good news about dear Bandit. I'm so glad this bout was not
as bad as the first one and that she will not have to undergo too much more
illness. We are continually purring and praying for her. Please let her know
in your own special way that we are thinking of her.

Here's hoping that Bandit will heal up quickly, with no more visits to TED
necessary.

And hoping that you can relax now that she's feeling somewhat better!

Excellent news!  Bandit is a tough ol' lady.  I'm glad the vet is taking the
problem with those heating bags seriously, too.  They should be recalled!
