Well, I've had a cough and sore throat since Sunday.  I don't know if the
cough is tearing up my throat badly enough to be sore or if they're two
separate problems.  I stayed home weds and thurs, hoping to be better by
today, but no, I just feel even worse and have transitioned to the sneezing
stage and feel like crap.  I'm going to get an appt at the dr's today, because
a few years ago I put it off too long and found out I had a bronchial
infection ... I don't think this is on that level, but still.  And I feel bad
about missing work, so I guess I kind of feel like my boss will take me more
seriously if I go to the doctor.  Not that he hasn't taken me seriously, but I
know he's always surprised by how often I'm sick.  I am too =/

Sorry, I didn't mean to whine.  What I meant to say is that grouchie Oscar
seems to know I'm sick.  I've heard you guys talking about nurse cats, but
Oscar ... well, I never would have pegged Oscar.  But last night, I felt just
awful, awful, awful.  DH encouraged me to take some cold meds, after which I
felt awful, my stomach hurt, and my eyes were wide open.  Anyway, with all of
this, Oscar jumped up next to me and started purring.  That isn't unusual, but
normally she only does it for a minute or two, then disappears.  Last night, I
swear she stayed by my side for at least half an hour, purring up a storm, and
the oddest thing -- her tail wasn't twitching, just still.  This is the cat
whose tail *always* twitches when humans are petting, just to be clear that
she might strike at any moment.  She accepted my skritches the whole time.  I
really think she was trying to comfort me.

Oscar's love feels especially good because, being sick, DH and I have been
trying not to touch; this is the second time I've been sick in a few weeks,
and in between my two sicknesses, he got sick, too.  We're pretty cuddly and
huggy, so this is definitely taking its toll on me, too.

Oh, no - it looks like Ping & Tennessee somehow managed to spread their
colds via usenet!  Bad Kitties!

Purrs that you feel better soon.

Er, I know you were joking, but could I get Oscar sick by letting her cuddle
with me?

By the way, I'm back from my doctor.  She says that I most likely have a viral
bronchitis that's been spreading through the community and that I should be on
the upswing by Sunday.  In the meantime, I get to gargle saltwater!  *sigh*

I don't think people can communicate their colds to cats and vice
versa.  I'm not surprised to hear that bronchitis is going around over
there.  That stuff always comes from Asia and it was bad here in the
last couple of months.  I had acute bronchitis about 6 weeks ago,
think I caught it on my weekend in Singapore, but many people here in
Thailand were hacking and coughing too.  I was coughing so hard and
all sorts of phlegm was coming up and it hurt right down into my
chest.  I ended up on antibiotics (Zithromax) and prednisone.  After I
started the meds, it went away in about 5 days.
I hope you get better soon!

I don't know. I think some of it can. Mom used to keep back a little bit of
amoxicillan from our medication for the cats because sometimes they seemed
to pick up what we kids had. But I know most forms don't jump species.

That sounds like bacterial bronchitis (it responded to antibiotics); the one
going around here is viral, which means you can't really do much to kill it,
though my doc did recommend gargling salt water (yuck!).  Apparently, white
phlegm = viral, yellow or green = bacterial.

I haven't been coughing *that* hard; a few years ago I had bronchitis, and my
cough sounded so bad that people told me I sounded like I was dying.

Long-distance purrs from Philly are joining Oscar's in-house purr therapy,
so you'll feel better ASAP.

In the past, I've had kitties who've acted as thermometers. If, the moment
I got up from the sofa, said cat(s) parked right where I'd been sitting a
moment before, chances are that I was running a fever. They loooooved that
extra-warm spot that Meowmy so thoughtfully left behind for them to sit
on. :o)

Harmony also could let me know if I had a fever by applying her little wet
nose to my bare arm while I was napping. If it felt like a purring ice
cube was touching my arm, my temperature was probably elevated. The colder
it felt, and the higher I jumped when Miss Harmony made unexpected contact
with her nose, the higher my temperature probably was. ;o)

I can't wait to see what Captain and Stanley have in store, the first time
they see that their Meowmy is under the weather. ;o)

Thank you =)  Oscar even put up with me holding her and kissing her back for a
few minutes just now.  I must really be sick!

Awww!

I really need to check my temp a few times when I'm not sick.  I have no idea
what my normal temp is.

Awww =)

My doc apologized for her cold hands.  I told her that actually, they felt
good on my face =)  She said the only people who say that are sick people =P

Knowing them, more mischief!

Cool hands when you are sick are the most wonderful things.

Hope you get to feeling better. This crud has been awful and it is like you
don't just get it once. Bleh is right.

Thank you!  Yeah, I was out sick for two days a few weeks ago, and now this.
We get unlimited sick leave, but that doesn't stop the work from piling up,
and the schedules don't slip.  Which makes you kind of wonder why they bother
to track our hours at all, but I digress ...

I have a theory that the frequent temp fluctuations in Colorado throw newbie
bodies for a loop, while native Coloradans seem to be fine.  My boss is a
Colorado native and is never sick ... I think he suspects there's something
desperately wrong with me.

Well, I am almost never sick either, and I have used up 40 hours of paid
time off between my headache/sinus/coldcrud stuff.  Wait til he gets hit
with it.

Every time Rob was re-assigned to a new post, we would spend at least 30
days catching diseases that we'd either not been exposed to at our
previous residence, or which had mutated differently than the ones we'd
already had.  In return, everyone we exposed ourselves to caught our
diseases, if they hadn't been exposed by others who moved from our old
area.

I sure know that routine.  Similar to the airplane cold.  I seldom catch a
cold.  Even when the kids bring one home from school.  But if I have to fly
anywhere....   I just pray that I don't get a bad cold until the return trip
so I can recover at home.

Hrm.  I flew out to DC (used to live there) a few weeks ago and got a cold the
week thereafter.  A week and a half later, this.  I wonder if the first cold
knocked me down for the second one.  My doc said they've been seeing tons of
cases of this bronchitis I have.

IMHO  Anytime you go to an unfamiliar place you contact different germs.
Years ago I noticed that when we hired new people they almost always came
down with a cold.  Sometimes they also gave it to everyone in the  office.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.   MLB

Thank you!  I am getting better, although I'm not 100%.  From what I read, my
cough will probably linger for over a month, and I'm still coughing up lots of
ookie stuff.  I also have the "loose tooth" feeling that accompanies sinus
problems.

But I *am* feeling better.  Today I even left the house!  Very exciting.
