Tomorrow morning I'm going to be interviewed by two kitties who are
looking for a new family to join.
Their person was until recently a postgrad student where I work - she's
leaving Australia soon and has been very worried about finding a place
for her cats to live. It would be difficult for her to take them where
she's going, and although she probably would do that if there were no
other option, she's concerned that it could be especially hard on the
older of the two. My bunch of four have now (I hope) got used to the
idea that there will always be plenty of cats around here and they'll
all be loved to bits anyway, so I think they'll soon settle down to the
idea of a couple more.
So, I'm off to be grilled by the two new fellows tommorrow morning, and
if they find me acceptable they'll be moving in with my bunch in a few
weeks. I hope they'll like me!

How could they not? It's so kind of you to take them in and I know
they'll be a great addition to your family. Purrs that all goes well.

Well, the interview seemed to go well and no major objections were
raised. In fact, after a slight false start (both interviewers turned up
their noses at the nice smelly tuna treats I'd brought with me), one
fellow was so laid back that he kept falling asleep on the job.
So, it looks as though I'll be welcoming two newcomers in a couple of
weeks. Orlando (Orly) is a lanky ginger fellow with gorgeous markings,
and Tyler is a huge longhaired fellow, mostly white, but with brown and
black stripy patches on his back and tail. Tyler was the more outgoing
of the two - he licked my hand, played tug of war with a piece of straw
and let be tickle his tummy. Orly was mostly interested in sleeping in
the shade, although he did a very careful examination of my bike, and
checked out my helmet too.
So, it was quite a successful morning. I do really feel for the poor
girl who's having to give them up though. I'm sure she had to have a
good cry after I left. In fact I'm kind of tearing up myself now. I'd so
hate to be in her position.

Hi Helen, I just got back and read this. What a sweet thing you are
doing, taking these kitties in. They sound wonderful and I hope they
integrate with your crew in no time :-)

Hi Britta - I really consider it an honour to be able to take them. They
are two beautiful creatures.
I'll post pictures once they settle in.

Well she could not do better than you as a caregiver to those cats.

Sounds good, purrs for the lady giving up her kittys. And purr for a
smooth transition in the Wheels household.

With 6 you get eggroll ;) Sorry, that's a reference to a silly American
film from the 1960's.
I'm glad the 'interview' went well. You are so kind for taking these cats
in.

Hehe, I remember that one... Doris Day wasn't it?

Yep, Doris Day and Brian Keith. 1968.

What's not to like?
And no - six isn't too many. You're certainly not a "collector" so
how many doesn't matter as long as it's cool with the cats. However,
the neighbor kids might start referring to you as ' The Cat Lady'.
But again.....nothing to worry about. I've been 'The Cat Lady' in two
different neighborhoods now - but our cats are all happy and healthy,
and I take pride in that the one thing I hear most often from people
when they come into our house is "Gee, you'd never know y'all had so
many cats - your house doesn't stink."

You know I have heard this too, phrased as a compliment:
"Your apartment sure doesn't smell like you've got four cats in here."
(Do they expect cats to stink or what? We clean the litter daily, use
baking soda deodorizer in the bottom of the boxes, and every 2-3
weeks, dump the litter boxes and scrub them down with cleaner.)

Ah, but it's the folks who aren't so quick to clean litter boxes,
vaccumn up hair, deodorize, etc., etc. that set a bad example. And why
so many renters with cats (or other pets) are turned down for
homes/apts. Sorry...my little soapbox. One of my oldest friends is on
the verge of being a collector. You can smell her house from the
driveway. Her clothes still smell after they've been washed. The
neighbors have talked to her. Her friends. She doesn't see it. PatM
