Poor Boone (our Lab) had to have surgery yesterday. He had a mass on
his abdomen. I do not have a good feeling about this. It started out
as a nipple that was just very elongated and it stayed like that for a
year and then it suddenly grew huge, ulcerated, and drained. We won't
get the biopsy back for 5-7 days.
Anyway, Boone is NOT feeling well today. Oliver is being so sweet to
him. He comes by at regular intervals and cleans the goop from Boone's
eyes, kisses him, and just lays around being companionable. Probably the
best part from Boone's point of view is that Oliver doesn't torture him
by hiding and then jumping out and biting his butt or waiting until he
is asleep and then jumping on his head to wrestle. :-)
They sure know when something is up, don't they?

Yes they do. From the night Grant began getting sick, Sugar and Pearl
behaved like angels. (Well, that is normal for Sugar but PEARL!! It was like
a miracle). Poor Boone. I will be sending special purrs for him. Please
keep us posted.

Awww, how sweet. Oliver loves his d*g pet and we all know that Boone
loves his cat. Lots of purrs on the way that Boone's pathology report is
negative of any nasties and purrs to you and your DH as well. I'm sure
you are terrified right now.

My son's oldest Bouvier also was operated on for a mass on his side. It
did have malignant cells. So my son says they will take it one step at a
time as needed. Purrs for Boone that he will feel better and that it is
negative. MLB

Purrs for you son's dog. They can do remarkable things these days and
now a diagnosis of malignant cells isn't automatically a death sentence.
I hope everything turns out well for both of us. :-)

Thanks. His name is Durnik and he is now about ten years old. He is a
very loving animal. Their other Bouvier is a female named Velvet. Durnik
has about a six inch scar and it is healing well. We are still purring
for Boone too. MLB

Oliver sounds like a good nurse. As for boone, my dog last year had a
fatty tumor that suddenly grew and took over the nipple and became a
mammary tumor. With her allergies she had scratched it and it became
infected and goopy with drainage. She was on Clavamox and when that
was gone the vet removed it with no problem and it was benign. But the
tumor moved with the skin like it was not really connected to the
chest wall by more than a blood vessel or two. Is Boone's tumor like
that? Purrs that the tumor is benign with no problems.

Thanks. Boone's tumor seemed to be a long nipple tumor like your dog's
and maybe some little lumps on the abdominal wall. The vet said the
good thing was that they just had to remove mostly fatty tissue and very
little muscle, which is good. One thing that concerns us is that he has
been having some coughing spells occasionally. If it is mammary cancer
apparently it will sometimes get into the lungs which isn't a good thing
at all. I'll be on pins and needles until the biopsy results are back.

He is feeling better this evening. Yesterday was really rough on him as
he really hurt whenever he walked or lay down. It broke my heart.
Today he seems more chipper and is eating normally and more willing to
walk. He even wanted to sniff about when we went outside. I am sure he
will still be sore for a few more days but for someone who has had what
really amounted to a mastectomy he is doing remarkably well. Thanks for
asking!
