First, my nerves are shot!!!
The vet said the burn was from the original burn (they discarded all the
heating pads, and they didn't use a heating pad for the surgery Wednesday).
She said it was not as deep, so it took a while for it to slough off the
skin and hair. It's not infected, but there is dead skin there so she put
her on Amoxicillin (sp?) and gave her more pain pills to give every 8 hours
instead of every 12 hours.
The burn actually extends further than you can see in the pictures - that is
just where the hair and skin and hair sloughed off - it's hard to tell
because the skin will look fine and then just a little while later you'll
look and it will be red (which makes it easier to understand why the vet
might have missed it when they examined her under anesthetic) - *AND* makes
me feel a little bit better about missing the first burn for so long.
I have to "lave" the burn with warm water 3 times a day for 5 minutes (I
bought a shampoo hose on the kitchen sink for this) to stimulate the blood
vessels underneath the burned area. Then I have to dry her and put
Silvadine on the burned area.
I got home, managed to toss the pain pill down her throat, gave her the
Amoxicillin (and had pink foam all over her, me, and my bedspread), then
tried to hold her down - *WITHOUT* touching the wound on her belly or the
burn on her back - for *5 MINUTES* while I hosed warm water on her back (do
you know how long 5 minutes can be??!). Then tried to dry her off as best I
could without touching any of her hurts.
Ohmygawd, I need a valium!

SO this burn wraps around her?? I just don't get this. I don't understand at
all, but I'm assuming it is one of those you have to be there in person to
figure it out things. Major purrs to both yours and Bandits' nerves. How
does she take that water bit? My goodness, you guys have my utmost
sympathies.

Yeah, only thing I can figure is the heating pad was wrapped around her and
they had it set to high and didn't check on her when they should have.
Clearly negligence, but nothing I can do about it that will help my baby
now. I'm just going to concentrate on getting her better.

Good plan. Honestly, I think the whole heating pad thing
is ridiculous. I will be sure to ask at any vet I use if they use them
and request that they not. Especially if they are wrapped around
the animals. Ugh.

Purrs for your shot nerves.
Did you ask the vet if the fact that Bandit was "difficult" made a
difference to how/when/if she was checked? Or did it all happen on the
operating table?

I don't know, I didn't ask whether it was on the operating table or
afterwards recovering, or both. I *DID* tell the vet that from now on (what
there will be of a now on with this vet) that if Bandit needed anything and
the tech was unable to do it they should call me *IMMEDIATELY* and I would
come get it done. She agreed to that.

I told you the reasons why an owner isn't allowed to help with
treatment, but I think in this case it definitely would be necessary
since Bandit is such a brat.
But I would expect to sign something like a waiver, or at least mention
it to the vet again. It's for the vet's protection.

You should ask your prof about this case. See what they say.

This vet has no problem with me handling Bandit - it was the Emergency Vet
that wouldn't let me do it even though I offered to sign a waiver. I just
wanted to stress to the vet that techs being afraid of Bandit is OK, just
call me when something needs to be done rather than not doing it.

I have rarely met an owned cat that wasn't handle-able, at least with
sedation. If the cat is *that* wild, it needs a sed, and possibly a
muzzle. We handled sedated ferals all the time. They were usually
netted and shot in the butt with a sedation cocktail. Once kitty was
ni-night, we could do what we wanted, pretty much. I never let my
guard down, though.
Only cat that ever bit me was an owned cat that *was* sedated, though.
It was totally my fault. It got infected almost immediately. That's
how I learned the hot salt water trick for treating bites.

Not likely to happen. Way too much liability, and waivers wouldn't
necessarily prevent a lawsuit or a complaint to the vet board.

I'm very glad that she agreed to that, since your kitty has been badly
burned on both front and back because I guess no one had the bottle to check
on her.
To me, that is totally unacceptable. It is nice for all vets to have pets
that they can easily handle, but it never happens like that and your vets
need to seriously review their procedures for cats that can be difficult to
handle,like Bandit and like ferals.
Someone has to check on them and turn them if they are on a heatpad.
Someone who is brave, and clothed in armour and gloves perhaps. Otherwise
they burn, like Bandit. I hate to think about the pain of the burns she
must have tolerated. Burns really, really hurt.
Little snuggie and sleep well purrs for Bandit from my two.

Yeah, I get physically sick to my stomach every time I think about how she
has been hurting for the past 3 weeks! I know how badly it hurts me if I
happen to brush my finger against a hot plate in a restaurant!!

I placed a towel in the kitchen sink and put her on that. Then I tucked her
head under my left are and held her right rear leg with my left hand and
used my right hand to direct the spray. It helps that this cat will let me
do *ANYTHING* with her, but she was squirming quite a bit - I had to be very
careful I didn't hug too hard or touch one of her hurt spots. It wasn't
easy by any means!

Wow, poor CatNipped and Bandit! I can't imagine trying to hold a
grumpy, sore, squirming cat under a hose for 5 minutes! Mega-Purrs
coming for both of you to get through this with sanity intact ;-)
Please give Bandit extra scritches from me as she has been through so
much lately.

This is precisely why heating pads can be so dangerous.
I have a test tomorrow and one section is on burns. I'll keep this
case in mind. I remember my teacher showing us pictures of a thermal
burn that had been caused by a hot fluid bag. You have to be sooooooo
careful.

That's what the vet said they were using. I just didn't realize how
*severe* the burn could be.

Wow. I don't envy you for having to do those treatments. Vino says
he doesn't envy poor Bandit either. Purrs for everything to heal up
quickly and for no more burned areas to emerge.
