A decision - of sorts

Marina - 13 Mar 2005 17:55 GMT Well, I'm going to try it. There are still three left of the blue kittens, and I'm going to take one home over Easter, when I'm off work for four days, so I can keep an eye on what happens. I decided against two, because that would just have been too much at once. Besides, there are two girls and one boy left, and my niece had pretty much decided from the start to keep one boy, so I couldn't have taken a boy and a girl as I had planned.
The girl I'm going to take home is called Mere (short for Cashmere - they all have cloth names. The only other one I can remember now is Chenille). She is the one who fell asleep in my arms last time I visited, she's much smaller than the others, and she has a lot of respect for the big cats, which I think are all good indications that this might work. But if it doesn't, my niece will take her back. Chenille, for her part, is very aggressive, even towards the older cats, so she would probably be a disaster with F&N.
I'm not sure yet if I'm going to change her name or keep Mere. Seeing as she's a very small cat, maybe that's a good name for her. I visited her (and the others) today, and she climbed up my leg, sucked on my fingers, played and chewed at the chain of my glasses, and almost fell asleep again in my arms. Aww.
Anywho, we'll see in a couple of weeks how it goes. of course, I won't know in four days, but at least I'll be there to supervise that there is no kitten homicide or too much senior baiting.

I think that is a great plan! I think you will be able to know in that amount of time, especially with a kitten. It's not like bringing in an adult cat. Good luck!!

Nina K Pettis - 13 Mar 2005 20:12 GMT >> I wonder how Frank and Nikki are going to react to this "intruder" > > Well, that's the big question here. ;o) FWIW, my vet (the cat expert) says that older cats accept kittens much more easily, and vice versa, than either will accept "middle aged" cats of around eight or ten years. Marina, I've always used the "bring 'em in and plop 'em down" method myself, and it's always worked for me. Of course, I'm very careful about the temperament of the new cat/kitten; for instance, we already knew that Jake was used to other cats and was not aggressive, nor did he retaliate if another cat was aggressive toward him -- his response was to sit down and look at the other cat as if to say, "Well, isn't THAT an interesting attitude!" <G> T.K. was also not aggressive and used to having other cats around to play with. Neither of them had any problems adjusting to the older cats or to each other, and the older ones didn't have any problems with them.
Of course, YMMV! Good luck with Mere -- I love that name.

I think this is why Mere is a good choice, because she is not aggressive (except towards the chain holding my glasses ;) and respects the older cats where she is now. It just hits me every now and then, 'I'm getting a kitten!' I can hardly wait.

If you DON'T produce a flood of pictures, Marina, we'll all be VERY disappointed! =o) That little blue baby is so adorable. =o) Those pure bred snobs who missed out on these kittens don't know what they're missing, and probably don't deserve those loving little souls. (It may be the kitten's good luck. I can't think cats would choose the life of a show cat of their own accord.) But I'm sure Mere has picked the perfect Meowmy.

Best of luck Marina - I really hope it works out. May I suggest a few tricks that may help smooth the introduction? All I was thinking of, was things like bringing a blanket or towel from your niece's place with the kittens' scent on, and leaving it in your apartment for Frank and Nikki to smell in advance of bringing Mere home. Then they won't get the shock of an unfamiliar smell as well as the sight of an intruder at the same time - give them a chance to get used to her smell first. Also very important to give them time out from her - can you have a place where she can stay apart from them for a while from time to time? Especially so she doesn't pester them while they are eating, using the litter tray, etc. I don't know if you would have access to or space for a cat pen there, but I always found that my own cats accepted my foster kittens more readily if the kittens were in a pen for some of the time. It's as if mine knew the kittens were confined and did not have the same privileges as them, so they didn't feel so threatened. Also, the kittens found the pen quite reassuring, a place to retreat to, and it may help Mere settle without feeling intimidated by all the strange new places to explore. A pen would also be useful for the time after the 4 days are up, so you could keep Mere confined while you are out at work, then when you get back, let her roam freely. This will also help Frank and Nikki get used to her without having her leap on them :-) Would your niece have one you could borrow?
Just a few thoughts that may help - I would so like her to settle with you, she sounds adorable and I know I would want to keep her if I was in your shoes :-))

I've only got the bathroom where I can confine her, but a pen would be great. I'll have to ask around. I'd hate to have to shut her up in the bathroom for any length of time. I have been thinking that I might feed her either in the bathroom or on a counter, not just to keep her from jumping F&N as they eat, but so she'd learn that her food is in a different place and maybe leave the big cats' food alone. It might be a good thing that she's a picky eater. She doesn't really accept anything else than fresh meat and cooked fish. Wouldn't it just be typical if she decided that Frank's kidney diet food is the perfect kitten food!

I've still been in the process of switching Shamrock over to something better than the fancy feast he'll eat (because the Pro Plan has wheat in it and seems to irratate his skin) so his "good" food is mixed with FF, and once the kittens discovered anything with FF in it, I'm having a hard time getting them back on their kitten food. :( I should have just kept them all separate for feeding time.

Exocat - 14 Mar 2005 12:19 GMT This is an EXCELLENT idea. When I introduced Snowball to Bandit & Pericles I'd previously given him articles that smelled of them and given them a blankie which he'd slept on for a while (the breeder sent it to me) and it seemed to work a treat, they were pretty familiar with each other from the very start.
Again, purrs for potfuls of luck, Mere is gorgeous.

I don't know how you held out so long, Marina. Given the adorableness of those little blue babies. =o) I think you've made a wise choice, in a kitten that will probably blend in best with your existing household. I think adult cats are more accepting of kittens generally, although there are exceptions to everything. If little Mere is respectful of adult cats, that will help F&N adjust better to her presence. I hope all will go well. If you keep Mere apart in a room of her own, and then let Frank and Nikki adjust to having her scent around gradually, it may cut down on the discord in the household. It may also help little Mere feel more secure for her first days in her new home. She'll know she's in a household with other cats around, but if they're the kitten eating types, they won't be able to eat her right away.
And then, you will also have a junior partner to keep you company. Frank and NIkki, hopefully will both live a good long time, yet, but no cat can live long enough to suit their hoomins. Having Mere will sustain you when, at last, you must bid your senior cats farewell. Good luck to all in the transition, Melissa

When we brought home our bitties, Smokey loved them as soon as he realized there was no momma cat that'd beat the snot out of him if he approached them. Nocturne was a hater for about two weeks, refusing to enter the same room. However, when they were 5 weeks old, they left the room and toddled up to Nox, who was appalled at their tiny size, and immediately began to groom them and raise them in her own image.

You restrained yourself to only one? <G> It sounds like you have everything well-planned, even to an alternative plan for little Mere if she doesn't fit in. But don't give up too soon! There was a point, when I introduced Mandy to Betsy back in 1990 that I was ready to toss poor Betsy out, if I'd had anywhere to send her! But we are all still together, after all these years!
And in my friends' household, Harry-the-Cat, a proud only cat for almost as long as Mandy and Betsy have been sharing a home, has adapted better than expected to the arrival of Bruce and Yoshi. So elderly cats can adapt.

Aww.
=============================================== Purrs that it works out. Maybe Frank will adopt her. Suz
