You all heard what happened with Bandit getting burned at the vet - well,
the problem was even worse.
This morning when I was petting her I noticed matted hair on her back by her
tail. I got out the wire brush to get the mat out and her hair came out in
a huge clump. A patch of skin about 1/2 inch wide and 2 inches long was
laid bare and I could see she had been burned there also!!!! It didn't look
*nearly* as bad as the one on her belly - it was just where her skin had
peeled (like when you get a bad sunburn) and the underlayer was raw like a
bad scrape. It's not infected, probably because of the Clavamox she's been
taking since Monday night, but *OHMYGAWD*!!!
I put a heavy layer of Silvadine on it, and I think it should be OK without
having to take her to the ER.
More purrs for my poor baby would be greatly appreciated!

Geez, that really sucks. Poor Bandit. You should tell the vet next
time you see her or maybe even call her. Purrs for Bandit.

Yeah, I'm going to call tomorrow to make sure I should keep putting the
Silvadine on it or leave it to dry out.

No, actually she's acting a little playful even. The burn on her back,
though raw, is not infected and it's only on the surface. I'm hoping
putting the Silvadine on it and continuing the Clavamox is all I'll have to
do.

When Nina was an infant, and in need of warmth, I sometimes would fill a
small drinking water bottle with very hot tap water, screw the lid on VERY
tight, and then would wrap it in a dishtowel. That way she had a warm, but
not too warm thing to lie near, but something that wasn't electric, or hot
enough to burn her or her Mama. It was improvisational, but the best I could
do, and it worked well.
Poor Bandit, though! She's just having an awful month! I hope that's the
last of the awful discoveries for you both, and that everything heals up
well and cleanly.

That sounds like a skin lesion from a matt to me. If a matt stays on
the skin too long it actually will make a sore, which can easily get
infected. They can look like burns or scrapes.
Hope she's feeling better soon!

I don't think so, the mat wasn't there last week - I only felt it 2 days ago
and thought it was because she had the e-collar and wasn't able to lick her
fur. And the skin is peeling just like mine does when I get a bad sunburn.

I can't believe the vet didn't find it . With burn patients,
especially in a case of a thermal burn it's a good idea to examine the
entire cat for other burns
of course this might be an exception since Bandit is such a psycho at
the vet. Sorry, Lori, but Bandit was probably not being nice so the
techs were unable to check thoroughly.
purrs that Bandit gets better.

Oh boy! You and that poor kitty need all the purrs you can get. I'm
surprised the vet missed it, but if it was a light burn and still
covered in hair ... Purrs-a-plenty originating in LA.

You know, that's a good idea - it's very warm here, so it shouldn't hurt.
When I bring her to the vet I'll ask about that - I'm going to insist that
she inspect Bandit inch by inch!

This is too much, far too much. It is one thing admitting that a burn to
the stomach was caused by leaving your poor bad-tempered girl on the heat
pad too long. That in itself is bad enough, burns are horribly painful.
Your vet has been very ethical in admitting it was their fault and treating
Bandit for free. It doesn't, of course, ease the pain of the burn and
subsequent operation for Bandit, but at least, given that it happened, they
did their best to put it right.
BUT! To find that she has been burned on the back as well is just too
horrific. I suppose they were afraid of her, but that isn't really an
excuse at all. They need to have procedures in place for dealing with
bad-tempered cats, they surely must get big old male ferals that are even
worse?
I hope you will tell them that Bandit is burnt on the back too, and to sort
it out so it doesn't happen to another kitty "with anger management issues"
;-) again. They mustn't be allowed to not check and turn regularly a half
comatose cat on a heat pad because they afraid of being bitten or scratched.
Whisper something nice in Bandit's ear from me and KFC & BF.

mistakes of a vet (many mistakes all with a single cat) and its so

Oh, that poor baby! How she must have been suffering! But what an
unusual place to get burned. That heating pad might have had a short
or something.?(I know nothing about electricity) I hope the hair grows
back over the scar. Sometimes burns go too deep for hair follicles.
The tail one should be ok but her poor belly. Sending more purrs,

I'm wondering if the vet was stupid enough to put her on another heating pad

lying on her back for that!
