This is so amazing to me. Felix is a very laid back cat to hang out with
Ava like that. Give them both scritches from me.

Will do, although I don't think Ava will appreciate it as much as
Felix will. :-)

lol! Probably not. Ava and Jill's Peaches made me think of a story my
brother tol me last night. My brother has a Macaw named Merlyn that he
adopted from a rescue group.  Merlyn is a character and it's amazing how
he is able to say things in correct context. He learned to whistle and
call the dogs which were several very old labs and two small yappy dogs.
The labs died of old age last fall (all three were around 15 y/o) and
this week my brother decided he wanted another large dog.  He adopted
two, one boxer/lab mix and a heeler (an australian type herding dog) and
he said they were really sweet dogs but the heeler kept trying to herd
the little dogs.  Somehow, Wednesday night the heeler, Rosie, got to
Merlyn and bit one of his toes off. Merlyn had to have emergency surgery
to amputate his toe and Rosie the heeler was returned to the shelter
because they felt she couldn't live in the house with Merlyn.
Fortunately, the shelter is a minimum kill shelter and the
administration assured my brother that she wouldn't be euthanized
because she really was a sweet dog. My brother assured them she was
sweet, she just wasn't suited for a household with birds (Merlyn is one
of two Macaws they have). I can't wait to hear what Merlyn has to say
when he gets back home and has time to think about this incident (he
already has an extensive collection of colorful words).

How do you give Ava special cuddles like petting?

Yyyyup.  A friend's sister lives on a farm and has an African Grey
(very talky type) who enjoys torturing the dogs by saying "Wanna go
out?  Wanna go out?"  The dogs always do!

I just catch and hold her or run a hand along her. She's not really
fond of human attention, but tolerates it. :-)

LOL! Is Ava practising her meatloafing technique there? Felix is
obviously showing her how it's done. ;o)

That's so sweet!  Peaches doesn't get out near the cat... Persia is tolerant
but only to a point.  I've also been told cats can make birds ill if the
come into close contact.

At least with doves (can't vouch for Peaches' species), I'd only
really worry if he bit or scratched her hard enough to break her skin
(hasn't happened yet).

Maybe you should show this pictures to the folks over at
rec.pets.birds, and ask their opinions too. ;)

I refuse to go over there, since they ganged up on me and insisted
that I'm torturing the bird by having her in the same household with a
cat. Apparently, I was supposed to either turn away an injured, cold
bird or kick out the cat I've had since a month after my wedding (in
1995).

You can tell from the photo that I'm just cruelly tormenting the
little featherhead, right? ;-)

Those folks are very judgemental.  Only a few are helpful or even polite.
Yeah, Ava looks like a purely tortured critter :)

I think close contact with cats is only a problem with certain species.
Lovebirds can catch something from cats - can't recall what it is now.  They
are fine unless they actually get rubbed by a cat.

I know virtually nothing about lovebirds (never had one, so I've never
needed to know :-) ).

Ringneck doves seem to co-exist fine with cats, if Ava's any reliable
indicator.

I thought it looked like she was doing her best to meatloaf, too.
They sure are very cute together!

don't think so little Fez. I wouldn't trust you near a bird for 1 second.

This is completely amazing to me.  Collared doves are one of Kitty's
favourite foods, and even Boyfriend has caught a couple.
I have lots that visit and also nest in my garden.
They are also a favourite meal for a female sparrowhawk that comes here.
It doesn't seem to make the slightest difference to their population
however.  They are a very successful species here in Britain and have been
recorded breeding in every month of the year.
My friend Bob in Michigan also has a pet collared dove, called Howard.  You
can see Howard, and Bob's miscellany of other animals on his website:

Yeah, that's pretty WOW, isn't it?  I met him on my poultry group, we got
into private mailing as I had an "American" question to ask, and I thought
he sounded the nicest to ask privately.
We have corresponded around twice a week for about 2 years now.
He is a lovely, lovely, sensitive man and very talented.

When my mom died very suddenly in 03 and I was almost destroyed he mailed me
every day until N came from Germany to help.  He was struggling after a week
to keep me cheerful, told me about his visit to the barbers :-)  Ahhhh.
Love him to bits.  I'll never forget it and never stop appreciating what he
did for someone he has still never met.

I find it amazing that Collared doves were not seen in Britain before
1967, then there was one pair in Norfolk. They've done pretty well since
then, I see as many as 30 at a time in my garden.

That is just too cute!  How did you get them used to one another?  What
happened the first time they met?

Felix is pretty relaxed, and we guess that Ava lived with cats before
she came to us (she showed up injured on the doorstep one cold night
and wound up a family member), since she's completely fearless when it
comes to cats.

When we brought Ava in, Felix came over, sniffed her, then gave us an
"Oh, OK, whatever" look and resumed his normal inactivity :-) (he's
middle-aged and kinda sedentary). Ava didn't seem to care about the
presence of a cat.
