What are your interests outside of cats?

I know that everyone here loves the feline masters, but I don't know
much about what other things you folks are into (though I would guess
cooking as choice #2 :)

My list of interests:

Aviation and Air Cadets
Military History/Royal United Services Institute
Wicca/Natural Magic and the Unitarian Church
Literature
Comic Books and Manga
Animation and Anime
Toy Collecting:  Transformers and My Little Pony
Original Fiction; Drawing Comic Art; Newspaper Cartooning;
(Kittyraps?)
Roleplaying (Werewolf the Apocalypse and Transformers)
Attempting to Knit

Science Fiction - books mostly, but also films and TV (favorite authors:
Spider Robinson, Robert Heinlein, Orson Scott Card, Anne McCaffrey, Tanya
Huff, Frank Hebert, Dean Ing, Ben Bova, Isaac Asimov, William C. Dietz,
Larry Niven, and hundreds more I just can't think of now)

Ballet (I used to be a dancer when I was young - back in the stone age)

Web Programming - I not only made a career of it, but I do it for fun and
volunteer to do it for a NPO.

Biking (not racing or mountain biking, just biking round the block)

Hiking

Camping

Yoga (new one)

Writing

I'm sure I'll think of more as others list theirs and make me go, "Oh yeah,
me too!"  ;>

Hugs,

I'll probably forget some, but ...

martial arts (specifically mostly taekwondo)
downhill skiing (doing, not watching)
mountain biking (doing, not watching)
reading
fiddling around with computers (especially open source stuff)
driving my WRX
riding my beemer motorcycle
ice hockey (playing, not watching)
sleeeep! (when I can get enough, which is rarely)

DH and I watched all of the Buffy episodes on DVD and are now plowing our way
through the Angel series, I think mostly because of Buffy withdrawal.

When I was in high school and college I played the Rifts RPG, and I still like
reading the source books, but I just haven't gotten around to doing anything
with it since then.

Wow!  You sure have an exciting list of varied interests.  Do you fly?  I
used to fly.  I got my private pilot license when I was 45 and flew for
about 5 years before money and other things forced me to give it up.

Nowadays my interests, other than my cats are mostly:

Toastmasters (I belong to three Toastmasters clubs and visit others)
Travel, especially to Australia and Alaska
Reading (especially mysteries, but including some sci fi, biography and
other non-fiction)
Games - Palabra, Taboo, Malarkey, Balderdash, Pictionary and Trivial
Pursuit.  I belong to a group that divides into two teams to play Trivial
Pursuit once a month.

Me too! I got my license when I was in my early 30's, flew for about 3
years, stopped when it got too expensive. I haven't flown in probably 15
years now.

I miss it terribly! I keep telling myself that when life settles down
and I finally have some disposable income again, I'm going to start
flying again.

I'm late to this thread.

My priorities have shifted greatly since having a baby, so I am not able to
be as active in my interests as I used to be.

*Reading
*Cooking (am slowly able to do more)
*Loooove mountain biking
*Hiking
*Shopping (cosmetics, shoes, clothing) if anyone else out there is
interested in this there is an alt.fashion newsgroup that is great.
*Traveling
*English history
*Photography is a budding interest as I am taking so many pictures of my
human baby.

Hey, I was in Air Cadets!  From age 13-18, I belonged to 848 Royal
Roads squadron in Victoria, BC.  Got my glider pilots licence when I
was 16 in Princeton and my private pilots licence the next summer in
Victoria.  Air cadets was great for me because before that I used to
be very shy, now not shy at all anymore.  And I got my pilots licence,
which came in handy because I ended up going to Selkirk College and
getting my commercial multi-IFR.
Although I don't fly anymore, I'm still interested in aviation,
although being married to a helicopter pilot has convinced me that
helicopters are vastly superiour to airplanes ;-)

Other things that I'm into are:

weightlifting and fitness
travelling
photography
stained glass
scuba diving
photoshop
reality TV (my guilty pleasure!)
drinking really good Australian wine
reading
shopping (how could I not be, living in Thailand!)

Cary tends to fill most of the times I'd have otherwise spent on my "other
interests" however, back before he came along:

Food & drink. Eating out, especially with friends at the cheap eats type of
restaurant. An apprentice wine snob

Scifi & fantasy. I tend towards the Fantasy end, Joel tends towards the
'hard' sci-fi with military stuff end, but there's enough of an overlap
there that our book collection melded seamlessly. Pratchett & Douglas Adams
are *major* influences, and my guilty secret is enjoying Stephen King on
occasion.

Roleplaying, especially dark gothic horror. The less dice, the better (says
she with a huge dice collection). Before we became breeders, we went to
roleplaying conventions and we'd win at least one "best player" trophy
between us each con, often more.

Geek stuff. I am a geek (see above for clues). I like science and maths and
other geeky things. There's . Gadgets and toys are cool. Silly putty fun,
but glop is groovy.... I could waste the rest of my life surfing the
internet....

Knitting & crochet.... its constructive fidgetting. I rarely if ever finish
anything, but can follow the most amazingly intricate patterns in those
"knitting bibles" even if I unravel it to do the next one.

Drawing & painting. I'm grossly out of practice and don't have the time for
it anymore, but I *used* to be quite good at it. I still like going to art
galleries though.

Theology. For some reason I am fascinated with what people believe... and
more interestingly *why*.

And anything else that takes my fancy at the time....

hooboy.  ummm, in no particular order:

books!  mainly Sci-fi & fantasy
cross stitch
attempting to crochet (something other than a demented potholder)
woodworking
renaissance faires
swords & daggers
calligraphy
sewing
fabric painting
video games (RPG's, adventure, MMORGS, the occasional platform)
D&D
collecting: dragons, hedgehogs, Wee Forest Folk
comics (some traditional , some web comics, a couple comic books)
Godzilla movies
Gossamer (Chuck Jones' Bugs Bunny character, as well as my cat)

I think that covers at least a large portion of my interests :)

We have what I believe is supposed to be one of the best Renaissance
Faires in the U.S., right here where I live, in Pennsylvanis. Eighteen
years ago, I used to live really near it, & go frequently. (One year, I
gave them some costumes & got a free pass for the season!) But I've
only gone once since. Not sure why. It's gotten huge.

DH and I met at the NY Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo, NY.  The kilt, the
accent and the horribly overpriced jewelry he was trying to sell me just
sucked me in :)
I've heard PA Ren Faire (PARF) is good but I haven't made it there yet.
Maryland has a beautiful site, under a canopy of big old trees.
That's my favorite so far but there are so many I haven't been to yet.

That's my problem with ren fests; I ignore the shows and do only two things:
shop and eat.  Shopping at a ren fest is deadly.

There's also a female knight at the MD joust.  Well, I hear that she jousts;
I've never actually seen her jousting.  She does make armor, and I have a
chainmail necklace of hers.

Have you been to the one in Maryland?  I went there several times and really
enjoyed it.  Johnny Fox, sword-swallower, had a show there; I actually saw him
recently on the Discovery channel!

I don't think it's nearly as big as many others, but it was nearby.

*nod* That's why I went to the MD one; when I lived in VA, it was the closest.
Well, there was a VA one that started up a few years ago, but it wasn't quite
the same.  Seemed that they were still struggling to find their identity.

Primate conservation and activism (my advocation)
knitting

flower gardening
birding

travel
kites (making, flying)
gourmet cooking
animals in general
spay/neuter education

Outside of cats?

Gardening, and a passing interest in botanical photography
Cinema, with a possibly unhealthy fondness for movie musicals
Sticking needles in stuff (oh all right, cross stitch)
Classical music, preferably baroque or 20th century composers

Inside of a cat, there's not much room to do anything.

Tee hee! That's the thought that's been making me giggle all day, Helen. =o)
Kind of like the quote.  "Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend.
Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."

Silliness aside and in no particular order,

Writing (it's amazing how many people on many of the electronic forums I've
posted to say this. =o) Nevertheless, I actually HAVE been working quite
hard at my writing for about 20 years now, and have received enough
encouragement from people whose opinions I trust to keep at it.  This leads
into my next interest which is reading some fantasy and sci-fi. I'm a LOTR
fan, and have been from the age of about 12.  My interest in writing AND
fantasy has got me involved in the projects listed on this link:
http://www.derynirealms.com/  I helped with the Deryni Adventure Game, and
am one of a team of contributing authors on the Deryni Atlas.

FudgeRPG is devising role playing games based on the Deryni Universe created
by Katherine Kurtz. I have been a fan of hers for 20 years and more, and I
can credit her with my early fascination with writing.  She is also a very
warm, nice person.
Other interests include:
Cooking
Needlepoint (This doesn't get a lot of attention, these days. But I find it
very soothing when I'm agitated.
Watercolor painting. (NIna is fascinated by this, and she always seems to
want to put her mark on my paintings, preferably in the form of a pawprint
on a not quite dry wash...Arrrrgh. I have done a few cat paintings, but I
have to work from photographs, as my models tend to be very uncooperative
about holding poses for very long.)
Travel (Although I don't have the budget for it, really)
But love of travel and painting lead me to take a two week painting trip to
Italy in September 2003, and it was FABULOUS. =o)
liberal/progressive politics
The TV program The West Wing
Dabbling my feet a little in photography, but mostly just in the form of
snapshots.
Singing (classical singing,  in days of yore.) Haven't done that for many
years, but enjoyed it while I did.
The most interested I get in sports is watching the Olympics whenever
they're on, but I am definitely ready for them to stop about 4 days before
the games are over.  I'm more of an O-lumpic sports person, as I'm a
sedentary person with a terrible sweet tooth.

Role-playing I play ADnD once a week and a wide variety of games every
week as part of my games club (just played Star Trek not bad and
trying my hand at Exalted next)I am also storyteller for an incredibly
long Vampire; The Masquerade chronicle which started in 1998 and may
finish in my lifetime!

Writing (and not just game stuff)

Reading (I read anything except Westerns and soppy romantic novels and
admit to a guilty enjoyment of no-brainer chick-lit)(and okay I'll
read anything and everything about cats)

Music- Anything from classical to disgustingly loud rock

Friends- Going for a beer with friends and having a good chat is one
of the most relaxing things going

Cartoons (I collect books of them)

Restaurants- I am currently trying to try and go to a new restaurant
at least once a month

Cooking- when I have time i.e. at weekends, in the week after a hard
day at work I'll grab whatever's fastest but at weekends I love to
take my time over it.

Quiz shows- I can't resist "mastermind", "Brain of Britain" and I love
"University Challenge"

Films- most sorts, we're in a DVD club and so I see a film every few
days

True crime- I enjoy reading books about true crime and tonight I
believe our DVD club has sent a film about Bundy. Okay I'm a ghoul!

Web design- I keep meaning to work on a website- but I need to get my
PC networked to his yet!

  Well, if you're a "ghoul" you have company.  I'm a fellow-ghoul,
which I forgot to mention in my own list of interests.  Love
true-crime books, have just about all of Anne Rule.  On TV, I'm

That's at least 3 of us (I think Pam S. has mentioned a similar
interest).

You can add me to that list.  DH hates them, but I find it interesting to
learn what miniscule thing tripped up the felon & got him/her convicted.
Have you watched "The First 48"?  They are a reality-TV type of show that
follows the detective(s) for the first 48 hours (the most crucial ones) of a
murder (usually jumping between three different crimes per episode, all in
the same city but in different districts).

I find it fascinating that Anne Rule worked side by side with Bundy on a
suicide prevention hotline.  The book 'The Stranger Beside Me' gave me
chills.  He walked her home!!

I forgot to mention it on my list too, along with antiques (at nearly
50, I'm roughly half way there), music (I'll listen to most anything
except rap and music full of cursing), and whatever else grabs my
imagination.  I also have most of Ann Rule's books along with some by
Greg Olson, and a few others.  I've been checking them out of the
library lately rather than over stuff our straining library even more.

I haven't posted in ages (RL is a hinderance in my participation in

In no particular order:

Cooking
gardening
natural history
entomology (the study of insects)
sci fi and fantasy books (too many favourite authors to mention, but
Ursula Le Guin is first in my list of favourites)
travel (horribly addicted to travel, but current budget curtails
*that* little hobby!)
looking after myself (a recent hobby, but one I *slowly* getting
better at)

Lots and lots of handicrafts!  I have cross stitch on the go; an
unfinished knitting project or two; various bits of tatting floating
about.  I'm also making crochet "granny squares" to turn into a blanket
for the geriatric day ward at our local hospital.  I'll knit/tat/crochet
whilst in the car, on a train ......

Cookery - although doing fancy stuff in the week tends not to be
practical with Rich working till late, I like to play at the weekend.

Pottering about in the garden, frequently using the produce for cookery.

Reading, but only when the cats will let me.

Sci-Fi, hard and some fantasy. My favorite authors: Andre Norton, MZ

Mystery: The Cat Who series, Ngaio Marsh books, Marion Babson, Agatha

Astronomy, Geology, Archeology, Anthropology...origins are
interesting.
Birdwatching. I helped gather data for the new Colorado Breeding Bird

Playing Beetle, a variant of Spider. A two-deck Solitaire game.
Watching our vast video collection. Especially the Highlander Series,
of which we have all of them! And the swords!
The only thing on modern tv i watch is "Lost" and an occasional soap
opera or a good movie. That is not very often. But i also like to
watch Ice Skating.

I used to do a lot of crocheting but have little time for it now.
Many years ago I used to do art, drawing and painting. I used to write
some poetry. But I got old and too busy making a living. Maybe I will
have time again when I retire. If arthritis lets me.

>What are your interests outside of cats?

I hardly read books any more, almost all my reading on done on my PC.
I wish I  could still do a lot of things I used to.  I was a very
active bike rider, commuting about seven miles to work whenever it
wasn't raining and taking a thirty mile ride on the way home several
times a week.  I used to practice martial arts, Hakko-Ryu JuJutsu in
particular.  I used to garden.  I used to love to cook, but can't take
all the standing, and chopping ingredients while sitting just isn't
the same -- it just reminds me that I'm not standing.  Well, enough of
what I used to do.

I belong to the International Guild of Knot Tyers and have invented
some of the best knots around.  I've got a replacement for the bowline
that's just as strong and a lot handier in many cases.  I discovered
the strongest knot that can be untied by hand (ie: no tools) after
line has been stretched to the breaking point. I've also developed a
knot for fishing line that's so strong the line is as likely to break
as the knot.

I collect pocket knives and don't consider myself properly attired  to
leave the house without one.  I wish I could afford to collect some
really good handmade knives, but the prices... whew!  I just finished
oiling a bunch of switchblades I recently ordered (thank heaven for
BladeAuction.com).  I use a smallish knife with a pocket clip for my
money clip and wear a miniature knife in a sheath on a thong around my
neck.  (Thank goodness I don't live in the UK.  You can't carry a
pocketknife there except for work.)

I don't like many computer games, but the ones I like, I really like.
I'm old fashioned though -- just let me play the original "Doom" and
I'm happy.

Regards and Purrs,
O J

I have a few knives, but when DH and I were dating and flying across the
country every two weeks, I got out of that habit.  I didn't want to
accidentally find myself at the airport with a favorite knife and have to give
it up.
