My cousin is selling up and moving to Spain, and although he loves Susie
who he's had since a kitten, because she's 18, the vet decided that she
wouldn't make the move well. Rather than ditch her at a shelter where
she'd take her chances, the vet recommened euthanaisia.
Well, my cousin understandably flipped out over these comments, but is
one of these people who follows the vets advice without questioning it.
He rang me earlier today in a right state, to discuss whether Susie
should be PTS.
Lets just say that the result of the conversation (after I calmed down
;o)) is that the Miles clan will be getting a new addition to the fur
family in the next few months when he moves. A 6lb, black and white, 18
year old geriatric cat called Susie, with a very sassy attitude.
Wayne is somewhat relieved that his cat will not be PTS, and is also
changing his vet.
I haven't broken the news to HRFL Tiger yet!

I can't get over these vets who suggest you do this to perfectly
healthy, happy cats. Thank Gawd my vet isn't like that, and also that
your cousin consulted you instead of just listening to this guy.
Purrs for Susie's happy transition.

Congrats to you and Suzie! Man, I can't believe that's the only solution that
occured to the vet =/ Although it's hard to imagine putting an 18yo cat in a
shelter or something, if your cousin had had no friends or family to help out

Congratulations on finding the correct solution. I would agree that an
18-year-old probably wouldn't take such a long trip well, particularly if
there is a quarantine at the end of the trip.

well, good for you. Susie should be happy to know that one of her last lives
will be spent with a loving person. Tell Tiger this is his elder, so he
should be respectful. <g>

Good for you, Helen! I just can't believe that vets actually recommend
short-sighted and inhumane stuff like that. His vet (former vet, anyway)
must not be a cat lover. So glad that Susie got a reprieve and found a
new forever home.
We'll be purring that HRFL Tiger accepts the change smoothly!

I think the vet ought to be PTS when he's old and becomes an inconvenience.

That reminds me of a sweet little cat I met a few years ago, she
belonged to a district nurse who aquired her when her previous slave
died. The cat was 18 when she got her, 7 years previously.

Hehe. Good löuck with that. The little black-and-white ladies are the
ones with the biggest cattitude. Just ask Nikki. Nobbut, good for you to
take in Susie. She would have no chance of being adopted from a shelter,
I guess.
