Gabey8 - 10 Mar 2005 16:52 GMT See what that guy in Wisconsin started, with his "hunting cats" referendum? ;o) The Mothership appears to have gotten the word out. Now there are kitties declaring, "Hunt THIS!"
On a more serious note, I hope the guy's not badly hurt. Let this be a lesson to anyone who has both weapons and cats to keep them separated.

Cat Shoots Owner
BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police said.
Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in his lower torso around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the state police post in Iron River reported. He was transported to Iron County Community Hospital.
Michelle Sand, a spokeswoman at the Iron River hospital, said Stanton was treated there before being transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment. But Marcie Miller, a representative of the Marquette facility, said there was no record of the hospital receiving a patient by that name.
A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at Stanton's home.
State police said he was cooking at his stove when the cat knocked the loaded gun off the kitchen counter behind him.

Weird. Why on earth would anyone have a loaded gun on the kitchen counter? Is he afraid someone will break in and steal his food?

That's what I was thinking. I've never owned a gun, but if I did it wouldn't be sitting out where anykitty or human (or me!) could knock it down, and it probably wouldn't be loaded.
Hope the guy heals up and that he learns not to keep his gun out where accidents can happen.

But I understand there's this thing called the 'safety' on them :) This is just rather odd. I'm wondering if this was just a wild story he made up to explain a gunshot wound.

>>>Jill LOL, I tend to agree with you on the mechanism of injury ;-) However, there are guns out there without a safety (or much of one). I have a Glock and the safety on it is a lever on the trigger, so when you pull the trigger you are turning the safety off :-\ Obviously I have to be sure to keep it under lock and key - although my daughter has been introduced to it and understands how it works and most important how dangerous it is, I never take any chances, and I certainly don't have it keeping me company in the kitchen while I'm cooking dinner.....

Knowledge is power!!! You may not have guns, or you may keep yours safely locked away, but your idiot neighbor whose kids your kids play with might have one sitting out. It's better that they know about them and what they can do. My grandkids can recite gun safety rules at the drop of a hat - even the youngest who is 5!

I'm wondering if this was >just a wild story he made up to explain a gunshot wound. I think you may have it. As a long time gun nut, this story raises the needle on my BS meter. It sounds like a "The dog ate my homework." tale to me. Pistols are 'drop tested' by manufacturers before they are sold to the public. If it was a .45, I'd be more inclined to believe it, since they are much more likely to be customized with a light trigger pull, and the action is usually kept in a different state of readiness.
I suspect that something stupid occurred and the person pointed the finger at his cat. Not that I blame him, if it happened to me, I'd blame the cat too.

hobbs - 11 Mar 2005 09:54 GMT I had to laugh at a memory this brought back, when my son was about 15 or 16 he had a bottle of that red stuff you paint on wounds, I forget the name, and *I* Had a new carpet with a white background, when I got home from work one night there was a long streak of red on the carpet, the Blythe answer to 'what happened ' was ' Panther jumped on the table while I was using it and knocked it off,'I didn't believe it of course, and eventually, he laughingly confessed, poor Panther. I guess the cats didn't hear about the change back in 1836 after the "Toledo War" between Ohio and Michigan and thought the guy was fair game. :-)

:-\) Liz - 10 Mar 2005 19:31 GMT This story reminds me of one I heard at work a couple of years ago...a fellow worker of ours came in limping and not sitting nor bending much....seems while opening the closet door ...somehow his shotgun fell out ...went off just as he turned his back to the closet and he got buckshot all across his rear and back and such......SUUUUUUURRRRREEEE...later it came out that his wife had come home unexpectily and found him...."engaged" with another woman...thus the wound! :-) Liz (who now slinks back to her dark corner to lurk once more...life has grabbed at me too much recently so I've been quiet alot)

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The Wisconsin man who's asked the state to allow hunters to kill stray cats says he's been getting death threats. Mark Smith told La Crosse police he's gotten angry phone calls and messages at work and at home.
Police reports said one call made while Smith was working at the La Crosse Fire Department suggested it should be "open season on firefighters." Another woman told Smith that if the state Legislature approved his request Smith would be hunted down and killed.
Smith has asked the Wisconsin Conservation Congress to vote on his proposal at an April 11 meeting. That vote would be advisory. The Legislature would have to consider the proposal before cats could be hunted.
Smith has proposed that any cat not under the owner's direct control or wearing a collar should be considered fair game for hunters with small-game licenses.
Cat enthusiasts are trying to organize opposition to Smith's proposal. Ted O'Donnell, a co-owner of MadCat Pet Supplies, has said the proposal is a "callous response" to the problem of cats preying on wild birds. He recently set up a Web site to inform people about it.

It may be enough for him to find out from my phone call that his activities are known in England. Anyway, that's what I hoped. Because of that he can expect a lot of flack. I am relying on you Merkins to keep me updated on what's happening about this. It won't be on our news. I have not ruled out phoning him again if I don't hear from you lot that he's changed his mind about allowing cats to be shot.

Does this explain why my phone bill has gone through the roof with all these calls to Wisconsin?....Note to SO, do not leave the kitties in the living room at night because "They're asleep and I don't want to wake them up". They are not asleep they are only pretending....

Time for recipes, gang?
CatNipped - 16 Mar 2005 19:59 GMT Since we've been talking Cajun recently...
"Basic" Jambalaya
1 pounds Black Forest honey ham, cubed 1 1/2 pounds smoked Cajun sausage, sliced 1/4" thick 1/2 pounds mild smoked sausage, sliced 1/4" thick 1 pound cooked chicken breast, cubed 1 large onion, chopped 1 roasted red bell pepper, chopped 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped 2 ribs celery, chopped 5 cloves garlic, chopped 1 14-oz. can diced tomato, slightly drained 1 teaspoon dried thyme 2 bay leaves 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning, or to taste salt and black pepper 2 cups uncooked long-grain rice 2 1/2 cups chicken stock or water 1/2 cup dry red wine (optional)
In a large heavy-bottomed skillet with a tight cover, brown the sausage. Pour off the excess drippings. Add the onion and stir over medium heat until slightly soft, about 3 minutes. Add the ham, chicken, roasted red pepper, parsley, celery, garlic, tomato, thyme, bay leaves, Cajun seasoning, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring, for about 5 minutes.
Add the rice and chicken stock or water and stir well. Cover and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes, or until the rice is almost done. Do not uncover until you check for doneness, near the end.
Add the wine, if you're using it (if you're not, you may or may not have to add a bit more water). Simmer over medium heat for another 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
Fluff with a fork and serve.
Serves 8.

Now there are [quoted text clipped - 30 lines] >Donna and the kitties who've never even seen a watergun, never mind a real >weapon, Captain and Stanley Having been an avid target shooter and handgun collector for 25 years, I can state that the story as written is virtually certain not to be true.
I've owned, or still own, over 50 handguns over the years. I have completely disassembled many of them down to the last spring and pin. I know how they work. I have heavily modified military service 9mm semiautomatic pistols to deliver target accuracy
Semiautomatic 9mm handguns simply do not discharge when knocked to the floor, as described.
However, idiots shoot themselves, frequently.
Why not blame the cat, so everyone doesn't think he is as stupid as he actually is.
Nice story, but as written, it just doesn't't fit the facts, and the real world of how semiautomatic pistols work.
Now, if it was a single action revolver, lacking a firing pin block or transfer bar ignition, it would be very possible for this to happen.
