Introducing My Babies

dorothy - 10 Mar 2005 09:10 GMT Hi! My name's Kerrie and I'm Meowmie to three beautiful kitties - Romeo, age 3, black DLH w/ little white spot on his chest; Deputy, age almost 13 mos, orange tabby DLH; and Socks, age 8?, grey & white DSH who we just adopted from a friend who moved to Spain. I've been reading all of your stories here for a while and I wanted to share one of my own.
Our little Deputy found me in the most original way.... I am a (female) police officer and was working in the detective bureau at the time. My partner and I were in a very bad part of town when a patrol officer had a suspect take off running from him. We were fairly nearby so we thought we'd see if we could help turn the bad guy up. We pulled to the side of the road and got out our flashlights, heading into the yards to see if he was hiding near one of the houses. As we walked past the sidewalk into the first yard, this tiny orange ball of fluff came bouncing out of the bushes toward us! As we made our way around, peering into anything that could contain a human body, the fluffball followed. Every bush we shined the light into, he would pounce into. Every dark spot we checked, he jumped into with all four feet. This kitten was more fearless than most of the guys on the force! We never did find our suspect, and wandered back to the car. My new partner followed closely. As we stood by the car talking to some other officers, he pranced up and sat down, cocking his head as if he were listening too. I bent down and picked him up, and he snuggled right into my arms. Well, of course I was hooked ;-)
I told my partner I wanted to take my new friend home, and he threw a fit. He is NOT a cat person, and claimed to be horribly allergic and refused to let me take my new baby into his car. So, I took my fluffball up onto a porch, and told him to stay right there and I would be right back for him. My "partner", with whom I was now absolutely furious, took me back to the station where I immediately got my car and streaked back to the porch where my kitty was waiting, praying that he would still be there. As soon as I pulled up, I saw the little orange ball of fluff bouncing toward me again from the porch. I scooped him up, snuggled him, and took him to the emergency vet to make sure he was treated for his fleas, worms, and to check to see if he had any diseases before he was introduced to my other kitties (one of whom was very sick at the time). The vet told me he was about 3 mos old and very skinny - probably had not eaten in a while. He asked me what his name was, and I came up with Deputy, as he had certainly earned his badge that night ;-) I picked him up first thing in the morning, gave him a bath, and he fell fast asleep on my chest. He has been the best thing in my life ever since, and has helped me through some really rough times. He's without a doubt the best partner I've EVER had ;-)

dorothy - 10 Mar 2005 21:04 GMT >>>What a really cute story. How did the other owners find you? :)
>>>Welcome to the group.
>>>Helen M Thank you! ;-) Romeo came to live with us (me and my 12 year old daughter) through an advertisement on the wall of the health club I belong to. One of the instructors had posted a note that her daughter had some free kittens to give away, and I thought the older cat that I had at the time (Nikita, RB) needed some companionship as she was alone a good part of the day. Melanie and I called the number and went out to an old farmhouse to pick out our new kitten, and Romeo was the friendliest ;-) The woman said that she had gone to a garage sale and heard some meowing coming from the house. When she investigated, she found the mama kitty and her babies in a window well. The person holding the garage sale told her they were strays and they ended up going home with her (free of charge, of course). We ended up taking mama kitty too, since this woman was moving out west to work on a large animal rescue site (don't remember the name or where offhand). Unfortunately, mama kitty, renamed Sasha, died a couple of months later, as she was FIV+ and had other health problems as well. Amazingly, Romeo was FIV- and has continued to be. We are so thankful for that!
Socks belonged to my best friend since he was a kitten, and she allowed him to move in with us when she and her husband moved to Spain. He had an.... *adjustment* period at first, but has settled in nicely and is content being Beta cat, because you know my little Deputy runs the household ;-) Being that Deputy isn't so little anymore (13 lbs now), Socks didn't stand much of a chance anyway.... He was an outdoor kitty all hjis life, and I'm surprised (and thrilled) that he never clamors to go out. I guess he's happy and content to be an indoor baby and doted on and fawned over now.
Oh, by the way, to avoid any confusion, my name is Kerrie, but my nickname on the force is Dorothy. That's a story for another day ;-)
Kerrie
Karen - 10 Mar 2005 12:58 GMT Most unusual story and VERY cute. Do you have pictures on the web anywhere? Welcome!

Welcome! It's nice to have you here. You sure started off with a great story. You must have been frantic till you could get back to that porch -- I'm glad the little one was still there. We'd all love to hear the stories of how you got your other two, but this one will be hard to top. I especially liked the part about how she hung out with her little head cocked listening to the banter after the incident was over.
Again, welcome!

>>>Regards and Purrs, >>>O J (Old John) Gritmon Thank you so much! Oh yes, I was absolutely petrified that he would be gone. I was prepared to search high and low for him if need be (and that's saying something if you know that neighborhood). He was just so friendly and sweet, I didn't want him to come across one of those cathaters and get hurt. I still drive by there every once in a while when I'm working and thank God that I got there in time.

Deputy is definitely a hooli-kitten, though not even close to your Sammy! I stayed up very late last night reading all of the With Mommy stories, and the Bandit stories too. Purrs and good thoughts coming your way for Bandit to feel all better quickly and continue to be the *presence* that she is ;-) You are such a gifted writer, and I was inspired to write down my story in large part because of yours. I was literally laughing so hard reading your Sammy chronicles I was crying - then I cried for a different reason reading Sammy's tribute to Pericles and Bandit's story of how she came to you. It warms my heart to know she found such a safe and loving home to rule with iron claw ;-)

Thank you Kerrie! Lots of people here are way more talented writers than me - I'm just pretty good at capturing the slapstick that is my life!! ;> You need to read the stories of the late Dave Yahuda (Flippy, can you give Kerrie the URL to that site, I've lost it?).
Bandit certainly does rule with an iron claw! She's a "queen" in every sense of the word!

For those who joined our merry little band of the feline owned since last July, let me briefly tell you the history of this upcoming event.
Last spring, Sherry R. mentioned that she and her husband were driving down I-40 in Arkansas and saw an exit sign for a place called Toad Suck Arkansas. Sherry wanted to check the place out, as the name had caught her imagination, but her hubby said no and kept on driving. Toad Suck jokes abounded on the group and by June, Sherry wasn't the only curious person in the group.
June 2004: My family starts it's epic journey across country from Fayetteville North Carolina to Idaho and into Washington State then British Columbia Canada then back to North Carolina again. I have posted requests to meet up with anyone willing to tolerate us, and received replies from various places. Our route will take us down I-40 to Flagstaff Arizona and then north to Idaho, giving us a chance to see the Grand Canyon on this trip. Sherry is one of the people we are going to connect with.
With Sherry in mind, we visit Toad Suck Arkansas. When we meet Sherry and Steve Touchstone (awesome people BTW) we find out that our trip has caught the group's imagination. I start cooking up ideas to meet more of the most wonderful people in the world. By the time we meet Christine Burel and her family in Albuquerque New Mexico, Rob and I are discussing ways to get us together. It is brought up to Christine, and she adds some great ideas of her own to the mix.
We meet Dave Yehuddah and his brother in law in Flagstaff and become determined to find a place for us to meet as many others as we can. I first bring up the idea of Kansas City Missouri, as it is both centrally located and out in the middle of no where. Dave Y is interested but noncommittal.
We met Sam and Ramona Nash at Grand Coulee Dam Washington and find that you can talk to someone for hours and still want to talk for days. This is just a confirmation of the earlier meetings we've had. By now both Rob and I are addicted to meeting group members. We're thrilled when we get to meet KLC and Loen in Penticton Canada. They are so totally wonderful it isn't funny. We're discussing all sorts of possibilities for meetings and I bring up Kansas City Missouri as a possible meeting place. Rob suggests Toad Suck Arkansas instead, as it matches the strangeness of our group. We all agree that Rob is a genius and we have to try to gather us together.
We get home and the idea of the Toad Suck gathering is born.
So why am I posting this now? Well now is the time to plan this puppy, or is that kitty, out. Do we want to meet at a campsite or at a motel? How many of us are interested in getting together. How many of us are going to be there. I'm planning on the 7th through 10th of July. Yes, I know it's hot, but it will be hot just about every where in the USA at that time. What activities are we interested in? Are there people interested in having a real troll-be-que? If there are people who can't get there under their own steam, are there others who are willing to transport them? Come on people, I want to get together and stay up all night munching snacks and yakking.

There are also a couple of picture groups as well, RPCA pictures comes to mind, that are solely for pictures. I believe Victor started that one. I'm sure that the owners will cough up the addys for them if you'd like.

>>>Jill I'm sorry - I haven't posted much before and I should have realized this would cause some confusion. Here's the backstory: While I was still in the FTO program (part of police training where the rookie - me - rides with a senior officer - Grandpa - and learns things from her grizzled elders), I was patrolling the South Side and got a call on a domestic involving a woman with a knife. As we were driving to the call, I saw a woman matching the suspect description walking on the street. It was around 3:00 in the morning, so she was one of the only people out. I stopped the car, told her to stop, and when she turned around I could see the knife in her hands. This was one of the first times I ever had to draw my weapon, and I was terrified. Long story short, she ended up dropping the weapon and was arrested without further incident. For some reason, it hadn't dawned on her that pulling a knife on your boyfriend would probably mean a trip to jail, and she came unglued when the wagon showed up. Grandpa (also known as Yoda, for the physical resemblance as well as the vast stores of knowledge) watched me wrestle this woman out of the back seat of the squad car, change her cuffs, and assist the wagon driver in searching her again prior to boarding the wagon. The entire time, this female was screaming at me at the top of her lungs, and one of the epithets she came out with was, "You Dorothy-lookin' b****, why don't you go on back to Kansas." This had Grandpa rolling on the ground for some reason, and I have henceforth been known as Dorothy to my fellow officers ;-)
And that.... is the REST of the story.

With a name like Katrina, you'd think there wouldn't be too many of us, but several years ago when I was working for State Parks I worked in a position where the other person doing that job at that site was also named Katrina. Since she was there first, she was Katrina 1 and I was Katrina 2... She was physically smaller, so she was Katrina the Lesser, and I was Katrina the Greater. When we were both there, yelling "hey, Katrina!" got to be confusing, so she answered to Katrina, I answered to "George". There are still 2 or 3 people from that time in my life who call me George, and I periodially have to explain the nickname...

At my old company, we could choose our own email IDs, and I chose monique. That worked fine until (what are the odds?) another Monique started working for us. I still kept the userid and frequently got her email, as well as her packages, which was kind of odd. We were a small enough company that everyone should have known both of us.

There was a part in that book where they are doing an undercover interdiction operation, I believe, and something goes wrong. One of the officers is running to back another up, and is yelling the acronym of their task force to identify himself - BARF. The mental picture of this officer running around trying to project an authoritative, we're-in-charge-now image yelling, "Barf, barf, barf, barf" just has me in tears every time. ;-) I also loved that most of his fiction was based in fact, gleaned from his experiences and those of his fellow officers. Kerrie +=========================================== Welcome Kerrie, great story about Deputy. My Dad is a retired Mich State Trouper, he often brout dogs that seemed lost home. Some we kept, some found new homes and some were returned to their homes(which didn't always thrill us.). Kudos on making Detective, that's not easy.

Thank you for the welcome and the kudos ;-) My Dad was a police officer here too for 30 years, so I guess I followed in his footsteps. I was a Detective for about 2 yrs, and went back to 3rd shift patrol (midnights) in Oct of 04. I had been working 2nd shift in the Detective bureau (4-12) and never got to spend any time with my daughter. As a single mom of a preteen girl, I figured my place was with her. I miss the Detective bureau, and hope to return some day, but I get to spend all evening with my girl and my kitties, and that's most important ;-)

>>>BTW, how is the kitty who was sick? Jean.P. Unfortunately, Nikita was at the end of her battle with IBD and I lost her about 3 days after Deputy came to live with us. It almost seemed as if she had been waiting for someone to come and keep Romeo company before she left. However, Deputy terrorized big 13 lb Romeo from the minute he got here ;-) I had been keeping Deputy separated from Kita and Romeo in the den with his own litter box and food while I was treating him for roundworms and ear mites. Deputy stayed in his room overnight, but when my daughter and I got up in the morning and she was getting ready for school, I saw a flash of orange in the living room and heard a squall from Romeo. All of a sudden, Romeo came tearing into the kitchen with tiny little Deputy bounding along after him. I got after my daughter about letting Deputy out as I opened the den door and returned Deputy to his quarters. She kept telling me she didn't let him out, and as I was saying, "Melanie, he didn't get out of the closed door all by himself," I heard scratching at the bottom of the den door. I turned around and saw this scrawny little kitten squeezing himself out through the inch high space between the bottom of the door and the floor. He then came prancing back into the kitchen, threw me a triumphant smile, and lit out after Romeo again. He's had full run of the house ever since.
