My baby is home. I've put up the baby gate on the bedroom door, brought out
a new litter box and "Yesterday's Mews" litter so she won't get clay dust in
her wound (oh my, it looks horrendous, but *MUCH* better than that burn
did), gave her a fresh can of Salmon cat food and some crunchy food, opened
up a can of crab meat in water, gave her a nice gentle brushing then tied
her e-collar around her neck and left her to lounge on all the pillows on my
bed.
When I picked her up, she was her normal, mean-tempered self. They went to
get her out of the cage and she was laying in the litter box (which had
clean, shredded newspaper in it - that's why I got the "Yesterday's Mews", I
don't think she knew what that litter box was for with paper instead of
litter). The only way they could get her out of the cage was to throw a
towel over her and the litter box and bring the whole litter box into the
exam room. When I reached over to remove the towel she started her mountain
lion yowling and both vet techs took three steps backward!!
She will be monumentally pampered for the next two weeks until she can get
her stitches out, of course!

Woo hoo! Little Kitty Happy Dances coming from the 8 here (even the still
stiffy Tennessee).
Well, OK, there's a possibility that they were doing the dance cuz it was
feeding time, but let's just *say* it was because Bandit is going to be
fine.

Yes, Sammy is the only one who can come give her nose kisses (and actually
the only one who *wants* to). Sammy is fearless cough(stupid)cough. She
has led *such* a pampered and sheltered life that she isn't afraid of
anything. One part of me is glad that she's like that, but I fear that if
she ever accidently gets out of the house she won't have the sense to stay
away from dangerous things/people/dogs.
Bandit most definitely has a BIG RED BOX around her name and even the senior
techs are afraid of her. I think that's probably why this all happened in
the first place - everyone was too afraid to go check on her and move her
around so she stayed in one spot on the heating pad and got burned. She
isn't all bluff either - when she bites, she bites down to the bone. I have
scars on my hands and arms from the times she's nailed me with tooth or claw
when going after somebody else and I got in the way - and she *loves* me.
One poor vet tech was once sent to the hospital because of her. I kept
telling the vet to let me hold her while he examined her, but it was one of
those places where it was policy that they wouldn't do that. He had the
tech put on leather gloves and try to hold her. She flipped over onto her
back and with her back claws laid his forearm open from elbow to wrist. I
felt really bad about it, he must have needed 50 or more stitches. I
freaked - there was blood everywhere. But I can flip her over and give her
bugga belly with my face buried in her fur. I demonstrated this to the vet
after she did that and he finally let me hold her.
Today, as pulled her over so I could look at her belly and then I walked out
with her cradled in my arms like a baby, the techs just looked on with wide
eyes.

I've only seen on cat bite my supervisor and really chomp her hand.
She went to the hospital but she was okay.
We once had a Siamese that cried bloody murder whenever we tried to do
something. At the end of the day we had to have the owner come back
and get him. The owner held out his hand under the cat's nose, and the
cat suddenly started purring and rolling around as if it say, "Oh, it's
YOU..... Oh DADDDDDDDDY!!! You won't BELIEVE what they did to me!!!"
Those are the kinds of animals where we tech let out a HUGE breath once
they are gone. They are also the kind we almost flip a coin to see who
gets to donate blood.....er, I mean handle them.

[[Those are the kinds of animals where we tech let out a HUGE breath once

A few years ago, I was in the waiting room at our TED's office. Suddenly I
heard, coming from the direction of the exam rooms, a loud feline snarl, a
human exclamation of pain, and a "Hey, you come back here!"
I looked up just in time to see a burly blue tom calmly stroll through the
doorway from the exam room area into the waiting room. His body language
clearly said that if his HUMAN wanted to hang out in the exam room, SHE
was free to, but HE had had his fill of that nonsense and was taking
himself elsewhere. Unfortunately, his very mortified human and the
bleeding vet tech had other ideas. They came out after him, and his human
scooped him up to carry him back for the rest of his exam.
I did my best not to burst out laughing, especially since I really did
feel sorry for the vet tech. That was one nasty scratch on her forearm.
I think some kitties need more than just leather gloves to handle them.
Has the vet tech school recommended, oh, suits of armor? Maybe they can be
gotten at a discount if they're purchased in bulk quantities from a
renaissance faire. ;o)
Donna, only half kidding about the armor

Practice makes perfect. The first couple of times I tried, I failed
miserably and had a majorly PO'd cat to deal with. After about a
month, I could towel any cat, any time, as long as it wasn't a big
feral.

Good news. If you need ideas how to make her comfortable, or how to
cover the wound dressing, check out Shadow's pictures in my Cats
Album. I used a cut piece of a spandex legging to put over the
gauze. It worked well, was harder to "dismantle" than the gauze. I
was given that tip from someone else in these groups; he doesn't post
anymore.

They have stainless steel sutures closing the wound and want me to leave it
open but keep it clean and dry. I got some "Yesterday's Mews" litter so she
doesn't get any dust or clay in the wound.
I am, however, having *MAJOR* problems getting the clavimix down her throat,
so any advice with that would help (I posted about it in a new thread).

When Princess (RB 16) adopted me I took her in to be spayed. The Vet
opened her and found she had already been done. When I took her home she
would not leave her incision alone, so I tried to wrap her tummy with an
ace bandage. Princess then would only walk backwards.....this continued
until the bandage was removed. (She has been gone for eight years and I
still miss her. MLB

Shadow got used to it and didn't have a problem walking. But, he had
the wraps on for about 2 months while he had the feeding tube.
Shamrock, though, can't walk with anything wrapped around his tummy,
including a harness or walking jacket. I read somewhere that this is
normal for cats, that they can't deal with something around their
stomach and they crawl, hunker down, or just plain freeze up.

Stinky likes to go outside but he hates the harness. Too bad, because
he's not going out without it. So he always hits the deck, and does
the "creepin' Jeezus" thing. He looks so miserable. :(

Poor Stinky! Lady Jane liked it outside when I used to try to get
her accustomed to the harness, but sooner or later she would do the
frantic, escape-any-way-you-can kitty move of leaping constantly so
that the lead was stretched horizontal at waist level. Now we figure
if she wants to smell grass, she'll have to do with what grows in the
little pot of seeds we grow for them as a digestive aid.
