They're conjoined twins. A pair of human twins were separated successfully
in Canada last Monday, but of course they weren't joined in the head,
which usually makes separation impossible.

*shudder*
I should be more charitable, but this kind of thing really freaks me out. I'm
glad the owner and vet are taking such good care of the kitten, though.

Wow. I hope the little kitty is healthy and survives!
There was a kitten like this born in the Philadelphia area within the past
few years. I think the family named it "Xerox", if my memory serves.
Unfortunately, the poor wee kitty had internal anomalies, along with the
visible difference of being born with two faces, and he didn't survive
past a few days.
Here's hoping that little Deuce is in good health and has nine lives'
worth of being pampered to look forward to.

Whoa! That is waaaaay too bizarre. I hope Deuce makes it. I worry about
what other issues are going on internally with such facial anomalies.

Wow. I highly doubt it will survive. I have seen this before in a cat book I
had when I was little. I find it kind of sad as I don't think it will have
much chance.

In nature the rule is "survival of the fittest". I am surprised the
mother cat would nurse it. Usually the mother with kill a defective
kitten (or so I have read). MLB

I think it's terribly sad. I recall another kitten a year or so ago
from a link someone posted, it looked about the same as this one, only
it was gray. It only lived a couple of days IIRC.

It is sad. Poor baby.

Survival beyond a few days is unlikely (plenty at
http://www.messybeast.com/freak-face.htm) though Ditto the two-faced
pig made it to adulthood (died of pneumonia after inhaling food through
one snout while eating with the other snout). There are no reported
cases of kittens survivng long-term with the condition. Current
research suggests it isn't classical conjoined twins but is a fault in
a protein called "Sonic hedgehog" that causes structures to be
duplicated in the embryo.

Yup - that's the condition I was thinking of. Thanks for reminding me! Poor
kitten. It's a genetic problem with the individual rather than co-joined
twins.I've seen it in pigs before and it occasionally happens in humans
IIRC. I doubt the kitten will survive long. Poor thing. However long it has
I hope it has love and a happy life.

OMG is right. Poor little thing, unfortunately most of the time these things
happen because there's something else very wrong with other parts of the
kitty. I doubt it will live much longer than a few days. Can anyone update
us about this? I'd am very curious.

Poor L'il bit. Yes, often one abnormality indicates others. In this
case, I'm guessing there were supposed to be 2 kittens, and either 1.
One kitten absorbed the other when they were only a few cells big, but
not entirely, leaving the face left over from the other kitten
(chimaera) or 2. The cells attempted to divide, but didn't quite, and
the second face grew from that.
Therefore, the kitten might have extra organs, or organ-and-a-halfs
that don't work like they should.
However, that's a might. I've seen animals with abnormalities (ie no
knee joints, no eyes) that were healthy in every other way. The fact
that Deuce is eating is a good sign.
Bright Blessings to him. If he makes it, he will make for a very
unusual pet.

I saw the pic of this kitten and watched the video. I couldn't understand
what was said on it.
My feeling on the matter is, FWIW, that if this kitten has a pair of eyes
that can see, two out of the four, a fully functioning mouth and digestive
system so that it can feed and nourish itself and eliminate waste, it should
be allowed to live. It will, of course, need a very special home if it
manages to survive.

My fear for the kitten would be that it will be treated as a freak show.
I mean, the video of it is when it was 3 hours old and the owner had
already called the press. If that was me, I'd be keeping it very quiet
and would be concentrating on helping the kitten survive.
Just my 0.02c.

I agree with what you say. My first thought would not have been "alert the

Recently there was a baby like this who's second head was removed - it
was basically just a second head hanging off the other one. So sad.

Several years ago, I read an article about a set of human conjoined
twins. If I remember correctly, it was in _Life_ magazine. The
little girls in question had two heads atop a single, wedge-shaped
torso. A vestigial third arm between the two heads had been
surgically removed shortly after her birth. She was described as
generally healthy, bright, and cheerful. One brain controlled the
right side of the body, and one the left side. They had learned to
cooperate enough to walk and swim. Between the separate nervous
systems and shared vital organs, there was no possibility of ever
dividing the two, as both sisters would die.

I read up a little on conjoined twins around the time of the failed
attempt to separate a pair some years ago. I also recently read a book on
mutations which discusses them briefly among a lot of other stuff about
human development that was really fascinating. There are so many
possibilities in human development. Many cases of conjoined twins are
fatal of course, but some aren't. I think I read about that girl. There's
also at least one adult female pair of American twins joined at the head
(and impossible to separate) in which they are two distinct individuals
rather than one individual with some physical parts of a second who never
really developed.

When they picked it up, it kicked and squirmed very vigorously. I'd bet
that cat survives.

And mama protested - she's nursing the kitten. That's a plus.
