OT: a helmet day

Caroline S. - 09 Mar 2005 00:31 GMT I am having one of those days when one should either stay in bed or wear a helmet. Getting dressed this morning, I whacked the top of my right hand really hard against the top of my dresser, causing me to crumple to floor in instantaneous sobs. 15 minutes later I was trying to get my DD dressed, when she accidentally smacked the corner of my right eye with the corner of a book. 20 minutes later I was putting her hair up in ponytails when the elastic snapped against the fingers of my right hand. In class, I think I smacked the laptop screen of the guy sitting behind me 2 or 3 times. Tonight, eating dinner before class, I knocked my soda can over onto my right arm and leg.
So I have a blue welt on my right hand, a twitch in my right eye, a wet sticky sleeve on my right arm, and 2.5 hours to go at school before I can go home.
Plus there is wind of about 40 mph and below freezing temps outside.
On the plus side, the cats didn't try to kill me today. I guess they figured I'd do myself in without any help.
(Don't really need purrs, I'm sure tomorrow will be better. Just wanted to share a bit of real slapstick with you all.)
Cheers Caroline S.

Which helmet would you prefer? I have bicycle, ski, hockey, and motorcycle helmets at my disposal =P Oh, and foam martial arts helmet, too.

I thought these things only happened to me. Today I managed to walk into a door (really!!), stub my toe on a cat tree, and found a deep scratch on my face that wasn't caused by the cat but I don't know how it got there. I also spilled milk on myself.
I hope you (we) have a safer day tomorrow!!!

Empathetic purs for you both, from me! I could trip over my own shadow, so I know all about mystery bruises, slapstick moments, spillage of things that no one else would have figured out a way to spill, and so on. ;o)

I've already had to replace one when I discovered that keyboards really don't care for ginger ale.
:-) When I was choosing new glasses today, a major criterion was "how tough is this"? :-)

Good news as found when I had an eye exam yesterday is that I'm *less* nearsighted than I was last exam. Bad news is I've added astigmatism in my left eye.

(If I were a birdwatcher I am sure I would have come down with nearsightedness-- that's just the way life works!) So I walk around the house with my reading glasses on, too lazy to take them off and on. The result: I often coo at pants my husband has dropped on the floor, thinking they are one of the cats.

I'm nearsighted and a year or two ago had to get bifocals, which simply weren't very effective for use with the computer. So I got a pair of 'computer glasses' which are just perfect for using with the computer. Of course, I can't see anything or anyone very clearly any distance away, and it's a bit of a nuisance switching glasses if I'm just going a short distance from my computer. So I just smile cheerfully and any and all blurs that appear human-shaped and hope I don't offend anyone!

Before I had cataract surgery I had regular glasses, and reading glasses, and specially made computer glasses with a slight tint to correct glare and focus set so I would sit the right distance from the screen,.

Is it in the shape of a paw print? A couple of years ago I was having a physical and the Dr. wanted to know why I had a bruise in the perfect shape of a paw print on my breast. My response was that she must not have any pets or she wouldn't have to ask that. :-)

I've had the occasional pawprint, but fortunately not such an embarrassing time/place. ;-)

LOL!
My two most memorable "mystery bruise" episodes stemmed from interaction with animals, as it happens.
The first one happened when I was about 12 years old. I was surprised to discover a GOOD-SIZED bruise on the front of my thigh. It was at least as long, from top to bottom, as the palm of my hand.
And it was a truly odd shape, too. I kept looking at it to try and figure out where it came from. One wouldn't expect to see a black-and-blue mark as large as that, without being able to recall what caused it.
Finally, I realized what it was. The previous day, I'd gone with my family to the Philadelphia Zoo, including a visit to the petting zoo there. They used to let people purchase some animal feed and go in the pen to feed the sheep, goats, etc. One of the sheep actually stood up and planted its front hooves on me, like a dog, trying to get at the feed I was carrying.
I thought nothing of it at the time, but darn if the encounter didn't leave its mark. The mystery bruise was a PERFECT sheep's hoofprint.
I think they make people with animal feed stand OUTSIDE the fence to feed the sheep and goats now. There were probably a few too many people who discovered hoof imprints on themselves the following day, back when people were permitted to carry feed into the pen. (Not to mention, I was big enough to remain standing when the sheep stood up on me, but a small child would have been bowled over for sure.)
The other odd episode happened in 1993. I'd volunteered as an interpreter/guide at a convention for the American Association of the Deaf-Blind. The convention was in Northridge, CA, and a group of PA, NJ, and Delaware-based deaf-blind delegates and volunteers all travelled together to get there.
On the flight back home, a guide-dog-using friend wanted to use the rest room. So she and one of our other guides headed to the bathroom. But first, they asked me if I would sit with the guide dog until they returned.
I was glad to. (I loved that dog. :o) ) So I moved over to their vacated seats to keep the dog company.
Megan, the dog, stood up when her human got up. She thought they were going somewhere. But once I came over and sat, and Megan realized that she was staying put with me till her human came back, she shook herself and lay back down.
Fast-forward to the next morning, when I was QUITE surprised to see not one little bruise on my shin, but three or four of them all grouped together... and I had no immediate recollection of how they got there.
Now, one bruise, I could see. Especially the day after coming home from an AADB convention. Checkout day is a sort of controlled chaos, with hundreds of people all departing at once for locations around the US and other countries. There are INFINITE opportunities to bump into people, luggage, shuttle bus steps, airport seats, etc.
But a *cluster* of bruises? Even *I* couldn't imagine a situation where I'd bump into something multiple times, with the contact points all within a fraction of an inch from one another, and not REMEMBER doing it.
And then I recalled sitting with Megan, when the dog shook herself before lying back down. The guide dog harness handle hit me in the leg a few times when she shook herself. LOL! Even for ME, that was a creative way to get bruised. ;o)
I think I should probably try to find out where to apply to get nine lives. The way my luck runs, I may well need them. ;o)

It's been happening for years, but I can't understand where they come from. Then there's the cat scratches that I don't remember getting, but suddenly I have a long one somewhere. <shakes head>

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] >there's the cat scratches that I don't remember getting, but suddenly I >have a long one somewhere. <shakes head> Lynda's compatriots in her role as an emergency counselor for post-traumatic stress and domestic violence have asked her very pointed questions about domestic violence in her own household. She's very prone to bruising and with the odd scratches and bruises from the six cats and bruises from her working as the family handyman since I've been disabled, she frequently raises questioning looks among those who are trained to look for such things.

Answer yes or > no." Some people just bruise easily =/ Like me. And when you bruise easily, and you're a clutz, and you do lots of rough and tumble things like martial arts, mountain biking, and ice hockey ...
Well, you get some funny looks.
I have pictures of some massive bruises from paintball. And I remember coming to work after my first few days learning to ride a mountainbike with clipless pedals; I had a massive bruise on one inner thigh where I'd smacked myself with the frame after coming to a stop and realizing I'd forgotten to clip out. A co-worker commented that the only way he'd ever get a bruise like that is if he'd broken the bone as well.

I read a lot of mystery novels, and I sometimes wonder what would happen if some pathologist suspected foul play on the grounds that the body was bruised from bashing into the furniture!
When Mandy was a kitten, she liked to play rough, and a co-worker advised me (I think, jokingly) that I should send my cat to obedience school after she noticed and commented on all the scratches.
